South Australia break Sheffield Shield drought with record chase against Queensland
Set 270 runs to win, Jason Sangha and Alex Carey scored centuries as SA posted 270-6 for a drought-breaking victory on day four of the decider in Adelaide.
SA's feat is the highest successful run chase in a Shield final, eclipsing Victoria's 239-2 against NSW in 1990-91.
The South Australians now hold the Shield and the one-day trophy in the same season for the first time, having downed Victoria in the 50-over final on 1 March.
On Saturday, Sangha and Carey produced a brilliant 202-run partnership after SA stumbled to 28 for 3 at Karen Rolton Oval. Sangha, in his first season since leaving NSW, scored a classy unbeaten 126 and Carey – one of only two South Australian-born players in the Shield champion team, with Conor McInerney – struck a superb 105.
Their match-winning union followed earlier heroics from SA paceman Brendan Doggett, who returned the best-ever match figures in a Shield final. Doggett, a former Queenslander, took 11 for 140, including 6 for 31 when the Bulls were skittled for 95 in their first innings – the lowest total of any state batting first in a Shield decider.
SA, powered by Jake Lehmann's 102, replied with 271 all out.

Queensland appeared down and out when 221 for 6, just 45 runs ahead, in their second innings at lunch on day three. But tons from Jack Wildermuth (111) and Jack Clayton (100) triggered a revival and the visitors made 445, a 269-run lead.
That target seemed secure when SA lost three wickets inside the first hour of Saturday's play. And it could have worse for the success-starved hosts: Sangha, on 13 and the score 37 for 3, was dropped by Ben McDermott at second slip from the bowling of Mark Steketee (3-40).

The elegant right-hander then flourished, reaching his century from 158 balls and hitting 16 fours and two sixes overall.
Two overs later, Carey saluted an increasingly raucous home crowd on completing his fourth ton in five Shield matches this season. Carey's stellar 132-ball knock ended soon after when bowled by a Steketee slower ball with 40 runs still required for victory.
First-innings century-maker Lehmann, the son of SA great Darren Lehmann who played in the state's last Shield triumph in 1995-96, was bowled for eight, and Liam Scott was dismissed for a duck.
That left Sangha, fittingly, to score the winning runs through midwicket with a stroke that instantly entered SA sporting folklore.

Footy fans have spent 20 years thinking they knew why an NRL legend had a savage bust-up with supercoach Wayne Bennett. They just found out they were WRONG all along
It's no secret that Gorden Tallis and Wayne Bennett have not always seen eye-to-eye over the years. However, it has never truly been clear - until now - why the pair have feuded. Many had thought that Tallis had been left fuming at Bennett after the supercoach benched the former Brisbane Broncos second-row ahead of his side's clash against the Cowboys in their blockbuster semi-final clash back in 2004. It would turn out that the former Brisbane skipper would retire from professional footy after that match, having made 214 appearances in footy's top flight. While the pair's relationship has grown better over the years, Tallis, speaking to former Broncos coach Kevin Walters on the Inside Ball Podcast, spoke for the first time in nearly 20 years on why the pair initially fell out. 'What fractured my relationship with Wayne, right, was when he sacked 'Kevvie', 'Lazzo' [Glenn Lazarus] and Gary Belcher,' Tallis said on the podcast. 'I wrote an article about it. He (Bennett) fronted me and I told him to f*** off. 'That's what fractured it. Not me sitting on the sideline.' Despite their past feuds, there is a serious amount of respect between these two giants of rugby league. Earlier this year, Tallis spoke about how Bennett, aged 75, had helped many troubled footy stars turn their lives around to become match winners. How? Simply by letting their wild streaks run riot. Some may see it as a risk. However, the footy boss, who has been coaching since 1987, holds the view that so long as players perform on the pitch then they would be welcome with open arms. Tallis also opened up on that fateful semi-final in 2004 and Bennett's reasoning behind it. 'We didn't have enough oomph off the bench,' Tallis recalled. 'So Wayne said in the Tuesday meeting with the senior guys: 'I might start Gordie off the bench because we need something coming off the bench', and I had played that role.' However, several of the team's senior players bit back at the footy coach over the decision. 'The best part was Mick De Vere and Shane Webcke said: 'He's our leader, he starts'. 'I remember those words. I thought Wayne would start Sam Thaiday, a Townsville boy, and Neville Costigan was on the bench, so we had some young kids who were a bit mad. 'I said to Wayne, 'Throw them in and I will wind them up', because we only needed them to go for 10 minutes.' The call even left Broncos legend Kevin Walters fuming, but Tallis tried to reassure his friend that Bennett wouldn't drop him to the bench. 'Then Kevvie rings me,' he said on the podcast. 'He says: 'Mate you are going to start off the bench. 'I said: 'Nah, we [Bennett and Tallis] have sorted it out'. 'He says: 'No, you are starting off the bench'. I said: 'Mate I've spoken to Wayne and I'm starting'. 'Then we go for the team walk on the day of the game. 'Wayne goes: 'I'm going to start you off the bench', but he knew as soon as we got around the team, there wouldn't be a confrontation, because the team comes first.' The Brocos would go on to lose the semi-final 10-0.

Arsenal's two extra incentives for Eberechi Eze that Tottenham failed to match
Arsenal usurped rivals Tottenham in the hunt to sign Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze with two factors related to transfer incentives turning the fight in their favour Arsenal's willingness to offer superior incentives reportedly proved pivotal in their efforts to sign Eberechi Eze ahead of rivals Tottenham. Namely, the Gunners proposed more achievable bonus conditions in a faster payment package in order to help convince Crystal Palace to sell to them instead. Mikel Arteta 's side look set to be bolstered by the £67.5million arrival of the England international following a breakthrough on Wednesday. The situation progressed after it emerged Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz is poised for a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. It's been reported that Greenwich-born Eze preferred a move to Arsenal instead of Spurs. And it now looks as though the Gunners will get their man after gazumping Tottenham with a package Palace will find more appealing. Tottenham reportedly advanced their own efforts to recruit Eze after James Maddison tore his ACL in pre-season. However, the loss of Havertz for at least the next few weeks appears to have forced Arsenal's hand in improving the terms on offer. Sky Sports reported on Thursday that Arsenal will pay Palace a guaranteed £60m, plus a further £7.5m in add-ons. The player had a £68m release clause (£60m plus £8m in add-ons) in his contract, which expired when the Premier League season got underway. Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta reportedly met with Eze in early July to discuss his transfer. The player was allegedly sold on the move, but the north Londoners didn't lodge a formal offer until this week. The Gunners are now on the verge of agreeing personal terms with the player before the deal is completed. It's understood Spurs have already withdrawn their interest and are now examining alternative solutions in attacking midfield. Tottenham were believed to be preparing a player-plus-cash offer that would have sweetened the deal for Palace. Forward Richarlison was being touted as a potential makeweight, but they appear to have accepted defeat in the hunt. Eze, 27, is said to be keen to remain in Palace's squad for Thursday's Europa Conference League game against Fredrikstad, but the club might yet pull him out. After five years at Selhurst Park, it's suggested the player wants to pay his respects and bid farewell to the fans properly. FA Cup-winner Eze has earned 12 caps for England and will link up with international team-mates Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly. He'll also get to make his Champions League debut this season provided the move goes through as expected. The boyhood Arsenal fan previously played in the club's academy as a youngster. However, he was released before joining the youth set-ups at Fulham, Reading and Millwall in his teens.
