'A good little soul': Community gathers at vigil for Toronto boy killed by stray bullet

Community members gathered outside a Toronto apartment building on Thursday to remember a boy killed by a stray bullet on the weekend. The candlelight vigil in honour of eight-year-old Jahvai Roy drew about 150 people to 15 Martha Eaton Way, near Tretheway and Black Creek drives, in North York. Holly Roy, his mother, told the crowd that she wants everybody to know her son's name and remember him not in a tragic way. She said Jahvai had an "energetic spirit," was anti-violence advocate at his young age, and she wants the memory of him to be positive. Roy said the loss of her son — a "good little soul, way beyond his time" — is unbearable. "I wish this on nobody. It's an indescribable pain I wish on no one," Roy said. "But I feel the love from my community, my city. I feel the love and support. And I thank everybody for reaching out," she said. Roy died in hospital after he was struck on Saturday at about 12:30 a.m. while he was lying in bed. The boy was with his mother, sat up when he heard the sound of gunshots, and was hit. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was buried on Wednesday. Toronto police have said the shooting happened outside the building. Two other apartment units were struck by gunfire, but no one else was injured. 'I was robbed' mother says Roy said she will hold onto positive memories of her son. "I'm trying so hard to hang on to the memory of that morning my son's life was taken and not the moments leading up to his death," Roy said. "He jumped out of bed and he's like 'Have a good day, Mom. I'll see you later, I love you.' That was an everyday thing. I was robbed. I was robbed of that." Organizers said the vigil was held to support Jahvai's grieving family and to stand together against gun violence. 'We will not forget,' mayor says Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw and Coun. Frances Nunziata also attended the vigil. Chow said Canada must crack down on illegal guns coming from the United States. The mayor added that Jahvai was a loving, kind boy and the city is mourning together for him. "We can make a choice [to] make a change together because if we give up, we are giving up on Jahvai. We will not do that. We will not forget. We will remember," Chow said. No suspect information has been released, no arrests have been made and police say the investigation continues.

Man accused of dangerous driving during car meet at Brampton plaza

A 21-year-old man is facing dangerous driving charges in connection with a car meet at a plaza in Brampton last week. Peel police said they received reports of a large gathering at Trinity Common Mall, in the area of Great Lakes Drive and Bovaird Drive East, on the evening of Aug. 16. ADVERTISEMENT Officers observed a white Dodge Challenger driving dangerously, which prompted them to stop the vehicle, police said. The driver tried to leave, but officers, police said, were able to box the vehicle and prevent the escape. However, the driver ditched the Dodge and attempted to run away, police said. He was apprehended following a brief foot pursuit. In a news release on Thursday, the driver was identified as Ajaypreet Sidhu. He has been charged with racing a motor vehicle, unnecessary noise, no muffler, obstructing plate, driving a motor vehicle not in accordance with emission regulation, failure to surrender licence, public nuisance and flight from a peace officer. Police said his driver's licence was suspended and his vehicle was impounded. 'Officers will continue to conduct regular patrols at plazas across the region, including Trinity Common Mall,' police said in the release. 'Residents may notice an increased police presence at times to ensure public safety. Unlawful activities – such as large unsanctioned gatherings, dangerous driving, public drinking, use of fireworks, and excessive noise – will not be tolerated.'
