More higher education institutions needed for students interested in science, says Ashoke Sen
Current trends
The current trends indicate a heavy incline towards engineering, medicine or management, which enable students to earn well, but science will be pursued by those who are genuinely interested in the subject.
'The demand is quite high; even to get into IISERs, there is tough competition,' Prof. Sen said.
IISERs, he said, have provided opportunities to interested students to pursue science.
'I am not particularly concerned about more students opting for professional courses. As long as there are enough opportunities for people genuinely interested in science, we are doing good enough,' Prof. Sen added.
On the research front, however, he sounded a note of caution, saying that India's allocation to science research, was minuscule, compared to China and other developed countries in Asia and the West. Besides, bureaucracy, with its regulations and administrative control, made it difficult to access grant money. 'Restrictions on the use of grant is a bottleneck in doing experimental research in India. Theorists, fortunately, do not suffer from this, unless they want to buy a big computer,' he added.
Prof. Sen was at The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) in Taramani on Thursday to deliver a lecture on 'Classical Gravitational Wave Tails from Quantum Soft Theorem' as part of 'The Alladi Ramakrishnan Centenary Lecture Series'.
His lecture dwelt on the use of certain results in quantum gravity, called soft graviton theorem, to simplify the calculation of aspects of gravitational waves produced by a scattering process (an explosion, like supernova, or a cluster collision). The application of the theorem simplifies the otherwise complicated calculation process to arrive at the source of the scatter.
Experimental use
In the theoretical realm, this method may still be experimentally used to reconstruct the scattering process once gravitational waves from scattering are detected.
Practical use related to actual measurements depended on several factors such as sensitivity of detection instruments and the frequency of such scattering processes in the universe.

Profs Sen, George get GD Birla award for Scientific Research
Two Indian researchers pushing the boundaries of quantum technologies and supramolecular chemistry were honoured with the prestigious GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for 2023 and 2024 at a ceremony in New Delhi on Friday. Each recipient receives ₹5 lakh. GD Birla believed in the ethos that building of corporations and building of institutions must not be driven by the motive of profit alone, but must be driven by the motive of improving the lives of the people around you,' said Scindia. 'All the awardees over the last 35 years have been fired with that very purpose.' 'In keeping with the tradition, this function has always been held as a private ceremony at the Birla House, as per the desire of my father and founder of the KK Birla Foundation,' said Shobhana Bhartia, president of the KK Birla Foundation, congratulating the winners. 'The decision to keep the age limit at 50 was a conscious decision taken with the view to try and encourage people at a relatively younger age,' said Bhartia, the chairperson and editorial director of HT Media Ltd. Professor George's pioneering work in supramolecular chemistry—described as 'chemistry beyond the molecule'—focuses on creating materials that mimic nature's remarkable functions. His team is developing supramolecular polymers, essentially plastics that can self-repair, self-heal, and be recycled completely. 'In a world dependent on plastics, this could be transformative,' George explained, envisioning applications extending to regenerative medicine, including repairing organs and skin. Professor Sen, who has authored 232 research articles, is driving advances in quantum technologies. 'We are heading towards the second revolution of quantum technology,' she said, building on the quantum mechanical principles that already underpin computers and mobile phones. Scindia praised Sen's work for its scientific brilliance and inspirational impact. 'Professor Sen has empowered and inspired women, the stronger gender, to follow in her footsteps,' he said, emphasising the need to boost women's participation in research and development. 'Professor George, your capability in supramolecular chemistry and the capability of your papers and your science, specifically in the area of polymers, in earlier unknown elements, could pave a new way for new products and new technology to come over,' Scindia said. The minister highlighted the Bharat 6G Alliance as an example of successful collaboration between startups, leading technology companies, IITs, and government agencies. 'Encouragingly, women are playing a significant role in this effort,' he noted. Scindia linked the achievements to India's broader scientific renaissance, citing the country's rise from the world's 11th to 4th largest economy, with projections to reach third position by 2028. 'From Shubhanshu Shukla docking at the International Space Station to Vikram Lander's touchdown at the moon's south pole, to developing our very own 4G stack, India has repeatedly proven its mettle,' he said. The minister highlighted landmark government initiatives including the India AI Mission, National Quantum Mission, and the recently launched Research, Development and Innovation Scheme backed by ₹1 lakh crore. Previous recipients include AK Sood, now principal scientific adviser to the government, who won in 2000 for his contributions to experimental physics.

ZSI scientists discover a wolf spider, and four wasp species from West Bengal
Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have announced the discovery of a new species of wolf spider, and four new species of spider-egg parasitic wasps, all from the State of West Bengal in the month of July. The newly described spider, Piratula acuminata, marks the first record of the genus Piratula in India. Discovered on Sagar island, part of the ecologically sensitive Sundarbans delta, this ground-dwelling wolf spider belongs to the family Lycosidae, commonly known as wolf spiders. Agile and nocturnal, they do not weave webs but ambush prey with precision and speed. 'This is a medium-sized spider, roughly eight to 10 millimetres in length,' Souvik Sen, lead author of the study from the ZSI, Kolkata, said. The details of the study have been published in the international peer reviewed journal Zootaxa, under the title 'First record of the genus Piratula Roewer, 1960from India, with the description of a new species'. The species is distinguished by a creamy-white body interspersed with brown and chalk-white spots, and unique genital structures. 'The unique morphological features of this spider immediately indicated it was an undocumented species,' Dr. Sen said, adding that the team of researchers conducted extensive morphological analysis over several weeks to confirm the findings. Along with Dr. Sen, Sudhin P.P. of the ZSI worked on the discovery, in collaboration with Pradeep M. Sankaran from Sacred Heart College, Kochi. The spider species was found in the estuarine mudflats of Sagar island, an area shaped by the river Ganga's alluvial deposits, and renowned for its high yet largely untapped biodiversity. Earlier this month in a separate study ZSI researchers led by K. Rajmohana identified and described four new species of parasitoid wasps belonging to the genus Idris (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). These tiny wasps — Idris bianor, Idris furvus, Idris hyllus, and Idris longiscapus — were collected from agroecosystems and semi-natural habitats across West Bengal between 2021 and 2023. These wasps, no more than a few millimetres long, are primary egg parasitoids of jumping spiders (Salticidae), and exhibit an unusual behaviour known as gregarious parasitism, where multiple wasps emerge from a single spider egg sac. 'This work underscores how much remains hidden in our own backyards,' said Dr. Rajmohana, Scientist E at the ZSI, whose team combined classical morphological taxonomy with DNA barcoding to confirm the presence of a new species. The findings were published recently in the European Journal of Taxonomy in a paper titled Description of four new species of Idris Forsters, 1856 ( Hymenoptera : Scelioniadate) India 'This integrative approach is now essential for accurate species delimitation, especially in micro-fauna where physical differences are minimal,' K.P. Dinesh from ZSI Pune, co-author of the paper, said. Parasitoid wasps like Idris play a key role in regulating spider populations and maintaining arthropod community balance. 'These discoveries reaffirm the significance of systematic taxonomy and modern molecular tools in uncovering India's hidden biodiversity. They also strengthen our national mission to document life forms before they are lost to climate change and habitat degradation,' lauding the teams for these discoveries, Dhriti Banerjee, Director, ZSI, said. While the specimens of Piratula acuminata were collected exclusively from Sagar island, the Idris wasps were gathered from multiple districts across West Bengal, pointing to both the ecological specificity and the wide-ranging diversity harboured by these regions.

Cosmologists flock to city for summit
Chennai: About 100 cosmologists and researchers from renowned institutions across the country will gather at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) in the city to discuss the evolution of universe from July 28 to Aug 1. The first edition of Cosmic Connections will explore the universe from its earliest instants to its evolution into the large-scale structure.
