The Liz Hurley effect: she unites families (as well as selling bikinis)

Y ou have to hand it to Elizabeth Hurley. Thirty-one years since we first encountered her on Hugh Grant's arm at the premiere of Four Weddings, she's still making headlines with a different boyfriend, Billy Ray Cyrus, but has the same cleavage. This weekend she debuted her latest look: sexy matriarch, queen of the blended family, bringer of peace where once there was Cyrus family strife. She posted a picture on Instagram of her son, Damian, 23, standing close to Cyrus's daughter, Miley, 32, with the hashtag 'proud parents'.
'This is what rock'n'roll is all about!' commented Billy Ray, somewhat implausibly. 'The kids are together SO PROUD.'
The kids were indeed together at the West End premiere of Something Beautiful, Miley's new 'visual album' of music (translation: video). Miley's mother, Tish, was married to Billy Ray, for 20 years, and she has described their 2022 divorce as a 'really difficult, dark time' for the family. Half her family weren't on speaking terms at one point, she has said, but she was working on that.

Kate Atkinson: it's too late for me to read War and Peace

The Fortnight in September by RC Sherriff — a little gem of a novel from 1931 about a family taking their annual summer holiday. It's more of a character study than anything, because nothing really happens. In fact I found myself worrying that something would happen! An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump by Joseph Wright of Derby. I like my paintings to tell a story. In this one, which is in the National Gallery, a group of people have gathered to witness a demonstration of the necessity of oxygen. The oxygen has already been removed from the air-pump and the bird in question — a white cockatoo — looks to be on the point of expiring. The date is 1768, a cataclysmic period of change is coming and science is about to take over from God, and we are in a rather lovely drawing room watching a bird being suffocated.

Naomi Campbell ensured all eyes were on her as she graced the red carpet at the star-studded European premiere of F1: The Movie in London on Monday night. The supermodel, 55, put on a captivating display in a figure-hugging black gown covered in intricately beaded fringed layers. The dazzling number boasted a daring side slit and a semi-sheer skirt, allowing a glimpse at the runway star's famous long legs. Naomi strutted her stuff for the cameras in a pair of black pointed stilettos, while hiding her smouldering gaze beneath trendy cateye shades. The stunner commanded attention at the premiere, mingling with the likes of the film's stars Brad Pitt and Damon Idris, as well as Hollywood star Tom Cruise and Naomi's close pal, Lewis Hamilton. F1: The Movie was made in collaboration with Formula One's governing body, the FIA, with seven-times world champion Lewis being one of the producers. Brad plays the lead role of as troubled race car driver Sonny Hayes, who is pitted against rookie and rival Joshua Pearce, played by Damson, as they battle it out at various Grand Prix's around the world. While the reviews for F1: The Movie aren't quite all in yet, social media reactions from several critics began flooding in on X this week. Many praised Brad and Damson's onscreen chemistry, as well the movie's overall look thanks to director Joseph Kosinski, who last worked on Top Gun: Maverick. With some even branding F1 the 'Top Gun for racing fans' - three years after the aviator movie made an eye-popping $1.496 billion worldwide. Naomi's appearance at the premiere came just hours after she shared rare snaps of her two children during a family day out in the woods. She revealed last year that she welcomed both her daughter - in 2021 - and her son - in 2023 - via surrogate. Taking to Instagram on Monday, Naomi was seen wearing a white smock dress, while holding hands with her two little ones as they strolled through the woods and went tree hugging together. Captioning the sweet post, she wrote: 'In the woods, hugging trees — surrounded by my heartbeats, my blessings, my children. ❤️❤️' Brad plays the lead role of as troubled race car driver Sonny Hayes, who is pitted against rookie and rival Joshua Pearce, played by Damson, as they battle it out at various Grand Prix's around the world (seen in film) Naomi surprised fans in 2021, when she announced she'd become a mother aged 50 and posed with her newborn daughter on the cover of Vogue. The catwalk queen has not made her children's names public and has kept their faces private on social media. Naomi previously revealed just how much her children mean to her in a candid interview with The Times, as she gushed: 'My babies are everything to me. It's made me fear for the future.' Naomi went on to explain that she was never looking for a father for her kids and is happy being 'a single mother of a single mum'. When asked whether she used a surrogate she replied: 'I did. I hope for a better world for my children. 'They are 110 per cent my priority. I have to be there for them on their first day at school.' She also spoke of her concern that younger generations are not interested in having children and insisted parenthood is always 'worth it', no matter how difficult the circumstances. She said: 'I have heard a lot of young girls saying that it is too expensive to have children and they may not want them, and I have said, "You will change your mind. You will want to be a mum"'. Taking to Instagram on Monday, Naomi was seen wearing a white smock dress, while holding hands with her two little ones as they strolled through the woods and went tree hugging together 'I understand economically it is tough. But my mum had nothing and she made it work. It's worth it. It is so amazing'. She continued: 'We have to depend on the younger generation to change this world. I trust my children more than us to do the right thing.' Elsewhere in the interview, she revealed that she won't let her daughter go into the world of work at 15 like she did, after starting her own career in her teenage years when she did her first cover shoot. The beauty, who was whisked abroad to model in her first photoshoot for Elle in New Orleans aged 15, said she would be uncomfortable with her own child starting work so young. The mother-of-two said: 'I'm not sure I would let her start working at 15. It's a ruthless world.'
