Man nabbed over daylight robbery of Langkawi goldsmith
LANGKAWI: A 45-year-old man was arrested by police after he was involved in the daylight robbery of a goldsmith at Jalan Pandak Mayah 5 here on Thursday (June 19).
Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari said the incident took place around 11.48am when the suspect, wearing a face mask, entered the premises and hurled chilli powder at one of the goldsmith employees.
'After disabling the victim with the chilli powder, the man proceeded to smash the display glass with a machete and grabbed a quantity of gold jewellery,' he said in a statement.
ACP Shariman said the the suspect attempted to flee but members of the public nearby immediately gave chase.
He said the suspect was eventually subdued and arrested by policemen on patrol in the area.
ACP Shariman said that initial investigations revealed the stolen jewellery was worth about RM50,000.
He said the case is being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code for robbery and armed robbery.

RM500 million worth of illegal e-waste seized in nationwide raid
KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities have raided 57 illegal e-waste processing premises across the country under the integrated Hazard 2.0 operation, conducted from June 16 until 2pm today, with total seizures estimated at RM500 million. Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the operation involved the police (PDRM) in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE), Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), and nine other agencies. According to LHDN, the operators of these premises are believed to have evaded taxes amounting to more than RM500 million. 'The seizures include RM240 million in e-waste, RM182 million in components, RM50 million in scrap items, and RM32 million involving other offences. The estimated tax evasion amounts to RM500 million,' he told a press conference at Bukit Aman here today. A total of 916 individuals were questioned during the raids, leading to the arrest of 453 people – 382 men, 70 women, and one teenager – aged between 16 and 70. Azmi said seven of the 57 premises had valid licences to process e-waste, but the owners will still be investigated as the licences only allow for the processing of locally generated waste. He also revealed possible information leaks before the operation, which may have prompted some operators to shut down in advance. 'Initial intelligence pointed to more targets, but many premises had closed before we arrived. This raises the possibility of leaked information,' he said, adding that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) may be involved in future investigations to identify any breach. Since the first e-waste operation began on Jan 1, a total of RM5.18 billion worth of e-waste has been seized, with 1,061 arrests and 167 investigation papers opened. Azmi added that Malaysia is a signatory to the Basel Convention, which prohibits the import of electronic waste for processing. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the seized waste was sourced locally or brought in illegally. Meanwhile, DOE enforcement director Rosli Zul said there are currently 156 licenced e-waste processing facilities nationwide, all of which are only permitted to handle waste generated domestically. 'Malaysia continues to be targeted by foreign countries for illegal e-waste disposal. To date, 600 containers have been detained at Port Klang for entering without proper authorisation,' he said, adding that port enforcement is handled by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

Cigarette smuggling syndicate busted using abandoned building as storage facility
SEPANG: The Customs Department has uncovered a smuggling syndicate that used a dilapidated and seemingly abandoned building as a storage facility for contraband cigarettes. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said the syndicate's modus operandi was uncovered following a raid on May 22 at a dilapidated building near a residential area in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. He said the abandoned building had been used as a storage facility for smuggled white cigarettes in an attempt to evade detection by authorities, with the structure, in its run-down condition, appeared unsuspicious and would typically go unnoticed. "Following the raid, nearly 1.9 million sticks of cigarettes of various brands and 377kg of tobacco, with the total market value, including duties and taxes, estimated at over RM1.56 million were seized," he said in a press conference today. He said efforts were underway to trace the owner of the premises to assist in the investigation, which is being conducted under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. Meanwhile, Zulkifli also revealed that Customs had successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle 62,000 litres of nicotine-laced electronic cigarette liquid during an operation at the premises of an air cargo terminal operator in the KLIA Free Trade Zone on April 28. He said the syndicate had attempted to deceive authorities by falsely declaring the product as disposable electronic cigarettes, which do not require an import licence from the Health Ministry. "Nicotine is classified as a prohibited item under Item 4, Schedule II, Part I of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023, and its importation is only allowed with a valid licence from the MOH. "The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM334,000, with duties and taxes amounting to RM60,680," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Regulation 30 (1) of the Free Zone Regulations 1991. – Bernama

Christina Liew KOTA KINABALU (June 19): There have been no takers of the RM10,000 reward offered for information leading to the capture of those responsible for beheading several elephants in Kalabakan, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew. 'So far, no one has come forward. We have our suspicions, but without solid evidence, we can't charge them in court. We want to charge them, actually. So anything we can do — just to investigate, maybe? We are reaching out to the local community, the kampung people around the area where the elephant was killed,' said Liew. She added that they are contacting villagers in the area, including the village head and the district police. 'Hopefully, we can work together. We've asked them to call our rescue line at any time so that we can follow the tracks and catch them. But I suspect the kampung people know something — they're just hesitant to come forward,' she alleged. Liew also said she does not believe the perpetrators are part of a syndicate. 'I don't believe it is. What do they gain? What do they get from killing these elephants? It's not for the organs or anything. There's nothing they got. They just chopped the head off. Very cruel.' When asked if the government would consider increasing the reward, she replied: 'We can negotiate.' On whether there have been any recent cases of headless elephants, she said, 'No, no. We hope this will stop. I get seriously angry every time I see something like this happen. It's no good, no good. I'm an animal lover myself — I do not like to see these things.' She said she has spoken to Wildlife Department director Soffian Abu Bakar, who informed her that despite the department's best efforts, they have not been able to identify the culprits. 'Hopefully, these kinds of incidents will not happen again. I've already instructed the Wildlife Department director that we cannot allow this to go unpunished. We must make sure this never happens again. This is murder — you are murdering the elephant. We do not allow that,' she stressed. On April 9, Soffian reported that six elephants had been found decapitated in Sabah since July 2024, suspected to be driven by market demand. 'Just in 2024 alone, 32 elephants have been recorded dead due to various causes such as illness, poisoning, suspected murder and shooting, and four of them were beheaded,' he said. 'As of today, two more elephants have been killed the same way — beheaded. That brings the total to six. All these incidents occurred along Kalabakan Road. The most likely reason for these killings, we assume, is ivory,' he added.
