Brazilian nun who was the world's oldest person dies aged 116
Sister Inah Canabarro, a Brazilian woman who was the world's oldest person, died on Wednesday, just weeks short of turning 117, her religious congregation said.
The Company of Saint Teresa of Jesus, a Teresian nun congregation, said Sister Canabarro died at home of natural causes.
The wake will take place on Thursday in Porto Alegre, the capital of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Sister Canabarro was confirmed in January as the world's oldest person by LongeviQuest, an organisation that tracks supercentenarians around the globe.
She was born in 1908 and would have turned 117 on May 27.
She said her Catholic faith was the key to her longevity, in a video taken by LongeviQuest in February 2024.
The smiling Sister Canabarro can be seen cracking jokes, sharing miniature paintings she used to make of wild flowers and reciting the Hail Mary prayer.
'I'm young, pretty and friendly — all very good, positive qualities that you have too,' the Teresian nun told the visitors to her retirement home in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre.
As a child, Sister Canabarro was so skinny that many people didn't think she would survive into adulthood, Cleber Canabarro, her 84-year-old nephew, told The Associated Press in January,
Her great-grandfather was a famed Brazilian general who took up arms during the turbulent period following Brazil's independence from Portugal in the 19th century.
She took up religious work while she was a teenager and spent two years in Montevideo, Uruguay, before moving to Rio de Janeiro and eventually settling in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Sister Canabarro was a lifelong teacher who counted General Joao Figueiredo, the last of the military dictators who governed Brazil between 1964 and 1985, among her former students.
She was also the beloved creator of two marching bands at schools in sister cities straddling the border between Uruguay and Brazil.
For her 110th birthday, she was honoured by Pope Francis.
She was the second-oldest nun ever documented, after Lucile Randon, who was the world's oldest person until her death in 2023 at the age of 118.
Sister Canabarro took the title of the oldest living person following the death of Japan's Tomiko Itooka in December, according to LongeviQuest.
She ranked as the 20th oldest documented person to have ever lived, a list topped by Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122, according to LongeviQuest.
'Her long and meaningful life touched many, and her legacy as a devoted educator, religious sister, and a supercentenarian will be remembered with great admiration,' LongeviQuest said in a statement.

Matheus Cunha will be perfect for Man Utd and Bruno Fernandes – but only if Ruben Amorim makes crucial signing
IT is safe to say that Manchester United failed to live up to their supporters' expectations. They finished in 15th place, well behind the European qualification spots, on just 42 points, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham to leave them trophyless. 10 Matheus Cunha could be the perfect addition to Man Utd Credit: Getty 10 But could depend on his relationship with Bruno Fernandes Credit: Reuters 10 Ruben Amorim will also need another attacker to complete the jigsaw Credit: Shutterstock Editorial The club have backed new boss That backing does appear to have extended to the transfer market as well. Brazil star Meanwhile, club captain READ MORE IN FOOTBALL How exactly Cunha will be used by He has played as a striker at points for Wolves but he is not the type to make regular runs behind the defensive line, preferring to drop deeper in order to receive and link play. That means he is arguably more effective in behind a main striker, which could create an overlap of profiles with the likes of Fernandes. Below we break down the tactical fit of Cunha at Man Utd under Amorim. Most read in Football BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Intelligent movement around the penalty area It is interesting to note that towards the end of the season we saw Wolves typically play the same tactical shape as Man Utd did under Amorim. Their 3-4-2-1 shape saw Cunha used either as a 9 or as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the main striker. Bruno Fernandes reveals role his wife played in £200m Al-Hilal transfer snub even though Man Utd were ready to cash in In these positions Cunha's intelligence and movement in the final third and around the penalty area helped Wolves create a lot of threat. He is very strong when it comes to finding little pockets of space to drop into and attack around the opposition defensive structure. The Brazilian is also difficult to deal with defensively because when defending deep opposition players will typically be concentrating on being tight and defending the space between the ball and the goal. Cunha takes advantage of this with sharp movements to outplay defenders and create shooting opportunities. 10 Here we see Cunha positioned outside of the box before he then takes a clever touch and bends the ball into the goa We believe Cunha would be able to play in a similar kind of role to Fernandes as both are extremely intelligent in the attacking phase of the game. This would mean, however, that Man Utd would still need to add a new forward to play ahead of him, assuming they decide This could be an issue solved in the near future with the signing of The type of runs Mbeumo makes would be perfect to stretch the length of the pitch and offer passing options or decoys for Cunha to benefit from. Indeed, the runs Mbeumo makes are extremely close to those of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool and could benefit both Cunha and Fernandes greatly. With Fernandes being more comfortable as a passer and creator from deeper areas, we should see Cunha acting as the link between the 10 Here Cunha is smart enough to check his run behind the back-pedalling defence before he gets the ball and is able to finish Given Fernandes is well known as one of the most aggressive and creative passers in the league he will enjoy having a player like Cunha alongside him to find space in tight areas. While Cunha is not an out and out striker, his movement and intelligence of positioning around the area will create real threat. Not just a finisher Cunha impressed in front of goal last season as he finished with 15 league goals, while he was also able to provide a creative threat for his team But Cunha has long been seen as more of a creative attacker than a true goalscorer, such as when he was at Hertha Berlin or Atletico Madrid . The same is true in deeper positions, especially in transition, when Cunha was capable of getting on the ball and play the final line breaking ball to release team-mates. He was extremely versatile with his positioning as he occupied pockets across the width of the penalty area. 10 Here Cunha has the ball in the left channel, drives at goal and then has the quality to slip the ball to a team-mate making a run beyond him In terms of his on pitch relationship with Fernandes, it will be interesting to see how Cunha interacts with him given their respective preferred creative operating areas. The 30-year-old is less of a runner and more of a passer which could create disconnects with Cunha due to a lack of vertical runners around him. With that said, the two should be able to connect deeper with Cunha being the player to make the more aggressive vertical run off the back of that connection. The issue Man Utd may have is they will essentially have two advanced midfielders without an effective focal point striker to play off of and make the ball stick. 10 Here Cunha has the ball wide and has the quality to pick out the deep run from his team-mate It is all very well for Amorim to add creativity and dangerous passing to their attacking unit. But they need to ensure that they have the players ahead of the ball that can make the runs to take advantage of those passes. Decision making and intelligence Cunha is a player who can become decisive for the Red Devils both in scoring goals and creating chances, and that is down to his supreme intelligence and strong decision making. This is what makes him such a versatile attacker, and it would therefore be somewhat wasteful to play him as the main striker. He is far better when allowed to play deeper and underneath a more physical and aggressive striker. 10 Cunha's intelligent movement off the back of the opposition midfield gives a team-mate a passing options before another striker pins an opposition defender Essentially, Man Utd should be looking to use a striker who can threaten space behind the defensive line. This should force the opposition defensive line deeper and then we would see Cunha, and Bruno , with more space that they could play in underneath the striker. The ability of a player to consistently make correct choices in terms of the timing and direction of his runs is something that is hugely underlooked. 10 Here he drops off the highest line to come back in and occupy a pocket of space between defenders Especially given the pace of the modern game and the intensity of the Premier League. The fact, Cunha always seems to give team-mates what they need at the right time will be hugely beneficial to Man Utd in terms of helping them to unlock opposition teams. Conclusion In our opinion signing a player like Cunha off the back of a terrible season will be a real boost for the Red Devils and their fans. What is critical though, is Cunha is then surrounded with more signings in key areas to give him the support to make the most of his attacking and creative abilities. Given It will still be a long summer ahead for Man Utd's recruitment team. 10

A girl in Brazil died after eating a a poisoned cupcake that was sent to her with a love note. Pic: Facebook São Paolo Civil Police arrested an unnamed 17-year-old girl who confessed to sending the cupcakes to Ana, saying that she just wanted to 'scare' her. She said that she bought the poison on the internet for 65 Brazilian Reals (approx €10), and sent a courier to deliver the cupcakes. The suspect also said that she bought the cupcakes from Menina Trufa, a local pastry shop, but the owner of the shop said that no couriers who work for her shop made the delivery. 'The product left the store and no one knows where it went,' Josielie Franca, who owns the pastry shop, said in a statement on Instagram. 'It was a delivery boy from an app. All of our deliveries arrive via our delivery boys, who use our pink bag, with our logo.' The teenager ate a cupcake addressed to her as 'the most beautiful girl I've ever seen,' but died just one day later after being poisoned. Pic:'This delivery was not made by our delivery boys.' Ana's school, João Baptista de Oliveira state school, paid tribute to her on social media, writing 'With a huge weight, our classroom says goodbye to a beautiful star. 'No words will be enough to console, but we hope that love and beautiful memories will comfort, little by little, the hurting hearts. Ana was, and will always be, part of our history. We will carry with us the good times, the lessons learned and the affection that she left behind.'

World number 361 Lois Boisson stuns Mirra Andreeva to reach semi-finals
Wildcard Lois Boisson stunned sixth seed Mirra Andreeva to reach the semi-finals of the French Open. The 22-year-old Frenchwoman, ranked 361 in the world, pulled off her second scarcely believable upset in the space of two days with a 7-6 (6) 6-3 victory. Boisson dropped to the clay with her hands over her eyes in emotional scenes before cupping her ear to the crowd on a packed, raucous Court Philippe-Chatrier. It was all too much for Russian teenager Andreeva, who had two set points in the first but suffered a complete meltdown in the second. She told the crowd to 'shut up', received a code violation for whacking a ball into the stands, burst into tears and forced her mother Raisa to leave her player's box. Boisson, who suffered a career-threatening ACL injury before what was supposed to be her debut here last year, will be comfortably inside the top 100 after this fairytale run. Mirra Andreeva endured a torrid afternoon (Aurelien Morissard/AP) But she is playing like a top-10 player; she has now beaten the third seed, Jessica Pegula and the sixth in Andreeva, with second seed Coco Gauff awaiting on Thursday for a place in the final. Gauff had earlier passed her biggest test so far at Roland Garros as she scrapped her way past fellow American Madison Keys to reach the semi-finals. A scruffy match, featuring a combined 101 unforced errors and 14 breaks of serve, ended 6-7 (6) 6-4 6-1 in favour of the world number two. Gauff had previously not dropped a set as she quietly made her way through the friendlier side of the draw. But in a nervy first set on both sides of the net, Gauff overturned a 4-1 deficit to force a set point at 5-4, only to be taken to a tie-break which Keys won. Gauff went 4-1 up in the second but found herself pegged back, before a break and a hold took the match into a decider. The confidence had drained from Australian Open champion Keys while Gauff finally located her serve, having coughed up nine double faults over the first two sets. A pass down the line brought up three match points and the 21-year-old roared with delight when Keys went long, giving her the victory in two hours and 11 minutes. 'Maddie was playing well, she's hitting the ball so fast and so low so I was just trying to fight for each point,' said Gauff, the runner-up at Roland Garros in 2022. 'I knew I had to be able to run today and as soon as the ball came short, punish her for it. 'It means a lot, getting through this tough match. I'm very happy to get through and be in the semi-finals again. I'll savour this one today and be ready for tomorrow's match.'
