Jack Draper determined to make his mark at Wimbledon

The 23-year-old is one of 23 British players in Friday's singles draw, the most since 1984, but there is no doubt he represents the best hope of a first home champion since Andy Murray nine years ago.
Having watched the Scot win his two titles in 2013 and 2016 as a promising junior, Draper believes he is now ready to show the British public why he is ranked world number four and regarded as one of the trophy favourites.
A post shared by Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic (@giorgioarmanitennisclassic)
'I definitely feel like a very different person, that's for sure,' said Draper, who last year went into the tournament ranked 28th.
'I feel a lot more confident, a lot more calm in myself. I feel like I've got great people around me who have been with me every year (going) up the rankings.
'Seeing yourself play in some big matches and in big environments, that helps more and more when you're coming into big places like Wimbledon. I think the home support that I'm going to have and people right behind me is going to be amazing.
'It's going to be a privilege to play as the British number one and that's what I've always wanted, I've wanted to make Centre Court or Wimbledon my environment, and I'm looking forward to hopefully starting that.'

Having reached the US Open semi-finals and then claimed one of the biggest titles outside of the grand slams at Indian Wells in March, Draper knows expectations will be enormous.
'I focus on what I can control,' he said. 'I can't control what people say, what noise people say, what hype there is, what criticism, all I can do is try my hardest and focus every day on what I'm going to do to prepare and play my best tennis in order to try to win the matches.
'I'm really excited to go out there to compete. Full of excitement knowing the crowd is right behind me, that I'm going to be playing on the courts that I wanted to play on since I was young, watching Murray, watching all these great players perform out there and it feels amazing to know that.
'It's sinking in that I'm there now and I've got the chance to show people what I can do.'
Draper had hoped to claim a first title on home soil at Queen's Club last weekend but struggled with tonsillitis and lost to Jiri Lehecka in the semi-finals.
After a course of antibiotics, Draper is now feeling much better and turned around an exhibition match against world number eight Holger Rune at the Giorgio Armani Classic at the Hurlingham Club on Thursday to win 4-6 6-3 (10/4).
He can go into Friday's draw safe in the knowledge he cannot face tournament favourites Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner until at least the semi-finals but Draper knows he, too, is now there to be shot at.
'Whoever I play against, I have the utmost respect for,' he said. 'They're in the draw for a reason, they're going to be dangerous, they're going to want to come out and swing against a guy who's a home player and who's highly ranked, and they've got nothing to lose.'
Draper will be the only seeded home player but Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter in particular will be dangerous floaters while Britain's ranks were swelled by another debutant on Thursday when 21-year-old Oliver Tarvet progressed through qualifying.
'I think it is really exciting for the British public to have so many good people in the draw from this country,' said Draper. 'I think it is a great opportunity for us all. I feel strong, I feel ready.'
Over at Wimbledon, meanwhile, a rematch of the 2023 and 2024 final took place on Centre Court, with Alcaraz facing Novak Djokovic in a practice contest.
Neither could gain the upper hand, with the set tied at 5-5 when the session came to a close.

When is the Wimbledon draw as Alcaraz and Draper wait to discover opponents

The draw for the men's and women's Wimbledon will take place later this week as defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova, as well as home favourites Jack Draper, find out their opponents Wimbledon gets underway on Monday with Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova aiming to defend their titles at the All England Club. Their path will become clearer this week when the draw is made. Last year Alcaraz retained his title after seeing off Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev en route. Winning three in a row would put him in a very exclusive group as he looks to back up his French Open success. ‌ There he saw off Jannik Sinner and the Spaniard and the Italian will again be expected to meet in the final, which is made possible by their seeding. Talk of which, Jack Draper, the main British hope, will have his chances enhanced after landing the fourth seed. ‌ It means at Wimbledon he can't play the likes of Alcaraz or Sinner until the semi-finals. Draper will hope to go deep in the tournament, where he'll be roared on by his home crowd. Krejcikova meanwhile claimed her second Grand Slam at Wimbledon last year but returns ranked well outside the world's top ten. The tournament at SW19 is the only Grand Slam that hasn't been dominated by the big three - Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff. None of them have even made the final but will expected to go deep into the tournament. Krejcikova was the 31st seed when she claimed the Wimbledon title last year. The women's draw ended up with only one of the top four seeds in the quarter-finals - that being former champion Elena Rybakina. When is the Wimbledon draw made? This year's Wimbledon draw will take place on Friday June 27. Players are randomly selected and assigned a place in the tournament by a special computer, but without the top 32 seeds. They are added in later to ensure that they cannot meet until later in Wimbledon. The men's and women's singles draw is live from 10am with the doubles draws taking place two hours later. All eyes will of course be on who the home favourites are playing - and who they could face later in the tournament. Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage will be hoping to make a statement but Emma Raducanu is again the British No 1 as she seeks to regain the form that took her to the US Open title four years ago. Despite some back issues Raducanu maintains she will play at SW19 despite her early exit from the Eastbourne Open. She said: "I think I will step on the court regardless.'

Rio Ferdinand names the two teams who can win the Premier League next season

Rio Ferdinand does not see any major surprises next season when it comes to the Premier League title race with Liverpool and Manchester City his favourites for the crown Rio Ferdinand is adamant that Liverpool and Manchester City will be the only teams with a realistic chance of winning the Premier League next year, snubbing Arsenal. Arne Slot enjoyed a dream maiden year at the helm by guiding Liverpool to Premier League glory ahead of the Gunners, who finished second for a third successive year. City, the defending champions, rallied to finish third after falling well behind the top two midway through the campaign. ‌ Liverpool have already made major moves to strengthen their title-winning squad while City have largely refreshed a team that fell below expectations last term. ‌ And Ferdinand reckons they will slug it out again for the domestic crown, citing Arsenal's desperate need for a top quality striker. "It's only going to be between Liverpool and Man City next season," Ferdinand said of the title race in his latest YouTube video for ' Rio Ferdinand Presents '. 'Arsenal might kick up a fuss for a couple of months – six months maybe – [but nothing more]. "Arsenal's signings right now look likely to be Norgaard, who is 31 years old, Kepa, who was a reserve keeper at Chelsea, and Martin Zubimendi, but the entire fan base is crying out for a centre forward or a left winger." While Ferdinand is not overly enamoured with Arsenal's transfer business to date, he is impressed with the work Liverpool have done so far this summer after watching them splash out on a British record deal for Florian Wirtz and substantial moves for Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. ‌ Join the debate! Who do you think will win the title next year? Let us know here He added: "I think what's not being talked about enough is Liverpool's ability to go and get a player that City were after, Bayern Munich were after and reportedly Real Madrid were also after. And Liverpool have come out on top in that. "I can see it so clearly at the club right now, I can see their whole process and their vision – it's so clear – and as a player, that's what you want when you walk into the club and they're pitching the project to you. "I can imagine Wirtz coming out of that meeting with Slot and saying 'don't take any calls from any of those other clubs, I'm going here'." Lewis Hamilton says Brad Pitt's character in F1 film has echoes of James Hunt

F1: The Movie, of which seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is an executive producer, was released this week. Pitt, 61, plays the role of veteran driver Sonny Hayes, who returns to the grid after a long absence, with fictional team APX GP. Hunt, the 1976 world champion, was famed for his charisma and maverick approach to motor racing. Speaking ahead of this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, Hamilton said: 'Firstly, I didn't write it. The writer, Ehren (Kruger), I am sure he was looking at people like James Hunt. 'He wanted a really cool character and he was looking at the characters from back in the (Ayrton) Senna days, so a combination of those drivers and I would say the James Hunt vibe. 'I don't know if that is what he ultimately chose, but that is the character I feel resembles very closely to him (Hayes) – a very cool, calm, good-looking cat and an elder statesmen within the team.' Pitt's rookie team-mate Joshua Pearce is played by British actor Damson Idris. Filming took place across multiple races over the last two seasons, and F1 chiefs hope the movie will follow the popularity of Netflix's Drive To Survive series in cracking America. The film premiered in New York last Monday and Hamilton was in Times Square along with the majority of the grid's drivers and cast. He continued: 'When you are reading the script it is hard to see how it will play out, but then to be at the premiere in the middle of Times Square and having Brad up on the screen with a Formula One car and the F1 logo, I was like, 'holy crap, this is absolutely insane'. 'That experience was great and for me a moment I will never forget. 'I had seen the film so many times on my laptop, watching every different section for so long and making comments as we edited and improved it, and I was like, 'I have seen it already so I am going to leave and go to dinner', but I decided to stay and to see everyone's reaction after it finished was one of the coolest things and really special.'
