A major broadband provider has ditched one of its biggest pledges and will implement mid-contract price rises for customers.
Hyperoptic previously advertised itself as a broadband provider that did not increase prices during a contract. This made it different from other major providers, including O2, Vodafone, and the BT Group, which includes BT, EE, and Plusnet.
The firm has also spent the last few years campaigning against the practice. Before this year, telecoms providers were allowed to increase prices mid-contract in line with inflation from March and April, plus up to 3.9% extra on top of this.
However, Ofcom banned inflation-based mid-contract price rises this year. Telecoms providers can still hike prices mid-contract, although now it is by a set amount detailed in the contract in "pounds and pence".
In early 2023, Hyperoptic launched a TV ad campaign calling out the pricing tactic. But in a U-turn move, the provider has now implemented mid-contract prices into its contracts.
From April 2026, broadband contracts will rise by £3 a year. However, the price hikes will only affect customer contracts that joined after June 3 this year. Hyperoptic currently has around 300,000 broadband customers in the UK.

The broadband provider said that existing customers will not be affected by the yearly price rises - unless they switch to a new contract. Customers on a Fair Fibre plan - which is the provider's cheaper package for those on benefits such as Universal Credit - will also not see their prices rise mid-contract.
Lutfu Kitapci, chief technology officer and managing director of ISP at Hyperoptic, said: "For years, broadband consumers have had to deal with unknown price increases in the middle of their contract and we are proud to have campaigned and supported the ban of this unfair practice.
"Price changes however are not uncommon, for example after introductory pricing, discounted months and other offers."
He added: 'To remain competitive in the current environment, we will be introducing an annual increase of £3 from April 2026, for customers joining from 3rd June 2025'.
The price adjustments represent significant percentage increases across Hyperoptic's product range - with some rising by 12% overall:

Alex Tofts, Strategist at Broadband Genie, expressed strong disappointment at the move, he said: "We're disappointed to see Hyperoptic join the long list of providers that raise prices for its customers before they reach the end of their deal. This price increase represents a gigantic price jump of 12% for customers wishing to subscribe to their most affordable deals.'
He added: 'All mid-contract price rises achieve is concern and confusion for customers. The only way we can make true progress and do justice for bill payers is for Ofcom to step up and outright ban these shameful price rises'.

Rachel Reeves said more people would qualify for the allowance "this winter", and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he wanted to widen the threshold for winter fuel in a U-turn on one of his government's first major policies. However details of the changes and who will be eligible remain unclear, with Sir Starmer failing to confirm how many people will now get it during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday. The payment - which is worth up to £300 to help with energy bills during the coldest months - was paid only to those on pension credit last year, but the policy was widely blamed for Labour's poor local election results. ‌ It saw 10 million fewer pensioners receive the money in 2024. ‌ Charities and MPs were among those who hit out at the move, showing concern for those whose income was slightly too high to qualify but then had expensive energy costs to pay. However, the restriction came in a bid to same save around £1.3 billion. Although the news is welcomed by many, there is still some confusion over what the announcement could mean. Article continues below Winter Fuel Payment means tested Last year, the Labour government introduced means-testing for the Winter Fuel Payment, meaning only certain pensioners over 66 would receive the money, rather than all pensioners. This resulted in over nine million UK pensioners losing the additional cash last winter. The move sparked significant backlash against Labour, which has persisted. Legal challenges have been launched against the government's decision, with charities warning it could push more elderly Brits into poverty. Research by Unite Union revealed that over two-thirds of its retired members had to reduce their heating last winter, a third took fewer baths or showers, and 16% had to cut back on hot meals due to the increased costs of trying to stay warm. The removal of the benefit was also linked to the rise in Reform Councillors in recent elections. ‌ Under the rules, you are eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment if you are over the state pension age of 66 and claiming one of the following benefits during the qualifying week: Income Support Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance Income-related Employment and Support Allowance Pension Credit Universal Credit What was announced this week? Although there have been no official announcements or changes today, one thing has been verified: Starmer's intention to increase the eligibility of pensioners for this winter's support payment. ‌ According to Jon Greer, Quilter's head of retirement policy, the Prime Minister's suggestion signifies a "notable shift in tone". Who will benefit from the U-turn? During Prime Minister's Questions, Sir Keir did not clarify who would benefit from the updated policy, despite acknowledging in a recent BBC interview that there was a pressing need for clarity. "We will look, again, as I said two weeks ago, at the eligibility for winter fuel, and of course, we'll set out how we pay for it," he responded when Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch queried about the number of pensioners, out of 10 million, who would have the allowance reinstated. ‌ The queries arose following Reeves' earlier statement that people "should be in no doubt that the means test will increase and more people will get winter fuel payment this winter". When will details be announced? Should the UK government wait until the Budget to announce the changes, it would be just prior to when payments are typically made. Eligible pensioners receive payments automatically in November or December. Under the current, short-lived system, individuals are required to claim pension credit - a top-up to the state pension for those on low incomes. ‌ Pressure from Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan, who had previously urged the government to rethink the cuts to millions of retirees, welcomed the PM's surprise reversal on Wednesday. She says that Keir Starmer should now provide winter fuel payments to the "majority" of pensioners. Speaking to the BBC, Ms Morgan said millionaires shouldn't be getting the payment. She said: "I'm not sure if millionaires should be getting a winter fuel allowance. So let's just make sure that they don't get it." ‌ But Ms Morgan added: "People below that, that's where the conversation got to be. I do want the majority of pensioners - I think they made a massive contribution to the country." Martin Lewis comments The Money Saving Expert founder said he was "delighted" about the news, in a social media post.. ‌ He said it was worth "explaining" the two issues he had always had with the way that the Winter Fuel Payment means-test had been put in place. He said: "The first one is the level. Currently, for a single pensioner, only those earning under £11,800 a year get the £200 or £300 winter fuel help. Now with energy bills still high and other energy bill help being taken away, that really was a big hit to the pensioners who were just above that limit. "I'm hoping to see this limit increase from the current £11,800 up to £20,000 or more. Perhaps they might only do it and link it to higher-rate taxpayers." ‌ He added: "The means test that they linked Winter Fuel payment to was Pension Credit. Now, Pension Credit has long been a flawed benefit which has been critically underclaimed, and even now, after all the communication over Winter Fuel, there are still 700,000 eligible pensioners who should get Pension Credit and thus winter fuel payments who don't because they don't claim. "Often, it will be vulnerable people with onset dementia or people who just can't go through the complicated process, especially on forms, or the message hasn't been passed on to them as it's quite difficult to explain the level of income that you need to get it. "So let's just put that into perspective, 700,000 people who have a total income of under £11,800 a year are missing out on the Winter Fuel Payment, even though that's the level the government says they should get it. Article continues below "So my big message to the Chancellor is, don't just increase the threshold. You have to look at the means test mechanism to make sure that the most vulnerable pensioners in this country, if they have income below your threshold, actually get the Winter Fuel Payment. And my fingers are crossed they'll be listening."

More info An upgraded official Glastonbury app includes live location sharing and a steps counter for the first time as revellers finalise plans for their arrival at the 900-acre site. Building on last year's revamp, Vodafone's 2025 edition focuses on "keeping friends and family connected" as they join around 210,000 others at the world-famous festival from June 25, the telecoms firm said. The app now offers live location sharing on the Glastonbury map, in a bid to make it easier for festival-goers to find their friends across the site. Step count tracking has been added to the My Highlights post-festival wrap, so attendees can reflect on the ground covered over the five days. In other key updates, the Shared Line-ups feature will now automatically update, helping festival-goers spot who their friends are seeing and allowing them to plan their day accordingly. A map search feature is also designed to make it easier to navigate Worthy Farm and find different cuisines, locate camping and merchandise stands or discover new stages. It also reprises some 2024 features, including personalised recommendations on artists performing at the festival based on listening habits through Spotify, the ability to share line-ups with friends, map pinning to help users find everything from their tent to a favourite food stall and automatic highlighting when artists overlap to help navigate the schedule. In 2024, the app saw 226,215 total downloads, 88.9% from festival-goers attending Worthy Farm and 11.1% from viewers at home. The app is free for iOS and Android. Maria Koutsoudakis, chief brand officer at Vodafone UK, said: "We know the app plays a big role in the festival experience so, this year, we have gone even further to ensure that fans can connect with their friends or family and get as much out of Glastonbury as possible. "Combined with us delivering the most Vodafone network capacity ever on-site, these new features will help festival-goers always be connected, no matter where they are across the site. "We're delighted to be able to use these features to reward both fans and communities across the UK, by tying the new step count feature to our campaign. Social impact is a key part of Glastonbury's ethos as a festival, and we're proud to be able to play our part in that." Latest figures from the tax office show that in March 2025, 579,560 families in the UK used the scheme to save on their annual childcare bills - this is an increase of 81,770 families compared to March last year Over 800,000 households have received an up to £4,000 boost through HMRC's Tax-Free Childcare scheme. According to official data, 826,000 families received government top-ups towards their childcare bills worth £632million between 2024 and 25. However, thousands more families could be eligible for the scheme, and HMRC is urging parents to sign up now for the summer. According to recent data, around 800,000 eligible families are eligible but aren't currently using this benefit. ‌ The childcare scheme is an online account which parents and guardians pay into, and then they receive a top up payments from the Government. ‌ For every £8 you pay into the account, the Government will automatically add in £2 which you can put towards your childcare costs. Childcare allowed under the scheme must be a registered provider such as nurseries, nannies, after school clubs and play schemes. The scheme helps pay for childcare for children up to the age of 11 years, or up to 16 if the child has a disability. If you're eligible, you can get up to £500 every three months - up to £2,000 a year - for each of your children. If your child is disabled, you could receive £1,000 or up to £4,000. To be eligible for the scheme, you must earn at least the minimum wage, for the equivalent of 16 hours a week. If you're in a couple, your partner must also earn this. ‌ Self-employed workers are also eligible if they earn this amount too. Both you and your partner also have to earn less than £100,000 a year to qualify. Going forward, you will need to make sure the detail on the account are up to date every three months to keep receiving the Government top ups. It's also important to note that each eligible child requires their own Tax-Free Childcare account. If families have more than one eligible child, they will need to register an account for each child. The government top-up is then applied to deposits made for each child, not the household.
