
Admission facilitation centres opened in government colleges in Cuddalore
Going by the demand last year, the college authorities expect more number of students to apply this time. Last year, there were over 17,880 applicants for 1,375 seats in various first-year programmes in the Government Arts College.
The online admission process will be carried out till May 27 and the admissions are likely to be completed by the end of next month so that classes could be started for first year students from August, official sources said.
According to an official, a single application would suffice for 176 Government Arts and Science Colleges across the State. A team of faculty members are deputed every day to handle the online admission process for the students from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At least 50 students turn up every day, he said.
Right from user registration, the staff help out the students to log in, fill in personal information, and furnish details pertaining to special reservation, scholarship, school of study, and academic qualification.
The students admitted in government colleges are exempted from paying tuition fee. Those among the students in government and government-aided colleges who had undergone their schooling in government schools from Classes VI to XII are entitled to a monthly assistance of ₹1,000 (Under Pudhumai Pen scheme for girls and Tamil Pudhalvan scheme for boys).
Admission facilitation centres have also been established in other government colleges colleges — Chidambaram (intake of 1,130), Vadalur (230), Vriddhachalam (1,514), Kattumannarkovil (330), Thittagudi (600) and Panruti (270).
An application fee of ₹48 and registration fee of ₹2 could be remitted through debit card/credit card/net banking/ UPI. Aspiring applicants can get their queries answered over phone: 044- 24343106/ 24342911.

TN starts seven ITIs for construction workers, kin
MADURAI: The Department of Employment and Training has started seven Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state exclusively for members and children of the TN Construction Workers Welfare Board. The department will offer monthly stipend of Rs 750 to each student. Also, eligible students will receive Rs 1000 monthly assistance under the Pudhumai Penn and Tamil Pudhalvan schemes. Speaking to TNIE, the director of department of employment and training B Vishnu Chandran said, 'Based on the request made by the TN Construction Workers Welfare Board, the state government has started seven ITIs across the state. The expenses will be met from the funds of board. The aim is to make members and children of construction workers welfare board skilled in their field.' 'There is huge demand for skilled labourers for industries. Without any certificate many of them work in construction industries. ITIs are assuring 100% placements to the students in leading companies with decent salary packages. Number of available seats in each trade is 48 except Electrician Power Distribution. Number of seats for Electrician Power Distribution is 40. Free bi-cycle, bus pass, books, shoes, uniforms and other essential materials will be provided to each candidate,' said KS Amutha, principal in charge of Thiruparankundram ITI. She further stated that interested candidates can get admission by visiting the ITIs with necessary documents and membership card of construction welfare board. Tamil Nadu government offers renewable energy course in eight polytechnic colleges
MADURAI: In a major initiative to promote green energy education, eight government polytechnic colleges in the southern districts have introduced a new 'Diploma in Renewable Energy' programme for the 2025-26 academic year. The course is being offered under a collaboration between the Government of Tamil Nadu and Tata Power Renewable Energy. The programme follows the 'Earn While You Learn' model, enabling students to receive monthly stipends ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 10,000 throughout their course period. As part of the curriculum, students will undergo three months of classroom training at their respective polytechnic colleges-including those in Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Usilampatti, Andipatti, and Chekkanurani-with a stipend of Rs 4,000 per month. The remaining nine months will be spent at TP Solar Limited in Tirunelveli, where they will gain industrial exposure and receive Rs 8,000 per month. Speaking to TNIE, G Vijayakumari, Principal of the Government Women's Polytechnic College, Madurai, said, 'Each polytechnic college has an intake of 30 seats. In Madurai, 38 students have already been admitted, with preference given to female candidates. Students will get hands-on learning on par with other engineering streams, including training in solar panel manufacturing, maintenance, and energy efficiency. This opens direct job opportunities at TP Solar after graduation without any service bond.' Andipatti Government Polytechnic College principal (i/c) M Poonguzhali added that classes began on July 7, and some seats are still available in certain colleges. 'Students who have completed Class XII can apply. Hostel and food facilities are provided free of cost during industrial training. The stipend will increase progressively- Rs 8,000 in the first year, Rs 9,000 in the second year, and Rs 10,000 in the final year,' she said. In addition, eligible students can avail Rs 1,000 monthly assistance under Pudhumaipen or Tamil Pudhalvan schemes. The course fee has been fixed at a nominal Rs 2,500 per year.
