Don't wait for rains to stop to carry out urgent road repairs: Gujarat CM to officials
The CM conducted a high-level review meeting in Gandhinagar to assess the condition of roads, bridges, and highways across Gujarat in the wake of the damage caused by the ongoing monsoon.
As per government records, work is underway on 243 damaged bridges while diversions are being monitored closely to avoid traffic disruption.
Highlighting the importance of maintaining road infrastructure for daily life and development, the CM stressed that not a single rain-free day, or even days witnessing light rainfall, should be wasted, adding that repairs must continue even on public holidays, ensuring public convenience is not disrupted.
Officials were instructed to take strict action against contractors if damage occurred during the defect-liability period. CM Patel emphasised accountability and called for quality execution in all road works.
He also asked urban local bodies to take swift action to resolve issues like waterlogging and underpass flooding, and to plan for long-term infrastructure solutions in vulnerable areas. Municipal commissioners joined the meeting via video conference and were directed to ensure timely repairs in cities to restore normalcy.
The CM reviewed the road status across rural areas, cities, and highways, including those under National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), the state roads department, panchayats, and municipal bodies. He called for coordinated teamwork among all agencies to speed up repairs and prevent delays due to inter-departmental issues.
To do that effectively, instructions were given out regarding the functioning of the 24×7 control room at Nirman Bhawan, Gandhinagar.
Officials informed the CM that of the 83 km of national highways affected by rain this year, 58 km have already been repaired while the remaining 25 km will be completed by July 20.
The review also included presentations from the roads and buildings department.

Edappadi delivers a stern message to ally BJP on coalition government issue
CHENNAI: Even as a section of the BJP leaders continues to insist that a coalition government will be formed after the 2026 Assembly election, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami may have put an end to speculations, delivering what analysts say is a stern message to the BJP that the AIADMK will independently form the government. Speaking at an AIADMK meeting in Thiruthuraipoondi (Tiruvarur district) on Saturday night, Palaniswami said, 'They (the DMK) are saying that in the AIADMK-BJP alliance, we will share power if we form the government. Mr Stalin, let me make this clear: We are not gullible. The AIADMK will win the polls with a majority and form the government on its own.' Palaniswami said the BJP joined the AIADMK-led alliance to unseat the DMK government, which is 'corrupt and anti-people'. 'Unlike you, we are not desperate to bring our heir to power. It is the will of the people that matters, and we will fulfil that,' he added. Although Palaniswami aimed the comments at DMK president and Chief Minister M K Stalin, political analysts said that this was, in fact, a stern message to the BJP, whose leaders continue to claim that a coalition government will be formed in the state. Quick on damage control, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran called up Palaniswami and discussed the remarks. Answering queries from reporters in Nagapattinam, Nagenthran denied any ulterior motive to EPS' remarks. Palaniswami had said that he was only responding to the campaign of the DMK that 'the BJP would swallow the AIADMK since the party has been mortgaged', said Nagenthran.

NR Congress will win Puducherry polls 2026 with clear majority: CM Rangasamy
PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister and All India NR Congress (AINRC) leader N Rangasamy on Sunday expressed confidence that his party would secure a clear majority in the 2026 Assembly elections and usher in 'good governance' under its leadership. Addressing a virtual membership induction event organised by the party's youth wing, presided over by Youth Wing president and MLA KSP Ramesh, Rangasamy said the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections should not be seen as a reflection of the Assembly polls. 'The Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are different. Though our alliance candidate lost in the parliamentary polls, the NR Congress will win the most seats in 2026,' he said. Asserting that the government has fulfilled the promises made during the previous elections, the Chief Minister said, 'This is the only government that keeps its word. We are ensuring development in all constituencies, irrespective of whether they are represented by ruling or opposition MLAs. Unable to digest this, the opposition is levelling baseless corruption allegations, which we will address at the appropriate time.' Rangasamy also underscored the limitations faced by the elected government in Puducherry due to the powers vested in the Lieutenant Governor. 'The L-G enjoys more powers than the elected government, which hampers the swift implementation of welfare schemes. This is why we continue to demand full statehood for Puducherry,' he added. Public Works Minister K Lakshminarayanan, Deputy Speaker P Rajavelu, former speaker Sabapathy, General Secretary NSJ Jayapal and other senior leaders also took part in the event.
