Hindustan Times20-06-2025
India's highly anticipated five-Test tour of England kicks off with the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, marking the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket. The spotlight is firmly on Shubman Gill, who leads the Test side for the first time following the retirements of senior pros like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. At just 25, Gill becomes one of India's youngest full-time Test captains, tasked with not only rebuilding a team but also maintaining the high standards set by his predecessors.
Gill's elevation comes at a time of significant transition. With just 32 Tests under his belt and an average just above 35, critics may question his readiness. However, former mentors like Gary Kirsten and legends such as Matthew Hayden have backed the Punjab-born opener to rise to the occasion, praising his cricketing intelligence, discipline, and calm demeanour under pressure.
India's squad reflects its transitional phase — an exciting but raw group of players stepping into unfamiliar leadership and match-day roles. With Rishabh Pant returning as vice-captain and expected to bat at No. 5, the batting line-up lacks the cushion of experience but boasts flair. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be crucial at the top.
The bowling unit, too, is evolving. With Ashwin retired and Shami not fit enough, India will likely depend on a pace-heavy attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur and Arshdeep Singh.
England, led by Ben Stokes, are well aware of India's rebuilding status but won't underestimate the visitors. With familiar names like Joe Root and Harry Brook anchoring their batting, the hosts aim to press home the advantage early in the series.
The match also marks the start of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle for both teams. For India, this series is not just about results but about laying the foundation of a team for the future — one led by a young, composed, and determined Shubman Gill.
India vs England first Test will be played at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, UK.
India vs England first Test will begin on June 120, 2025.
India vs England first Test will start at 3:00 PM IST, with the toss at 2:30 PM IST.

Kohli, who recently retired from Test cricket, was in London following his Indian Premier League (IPL) triumph with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in June 2025. He was seen in the stands, dressed in formals, cheering for Djokovic. Djokovic delivered a masterclass, overcoming a 1-6 deficit in the first set to win 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the subsequent sets, advancing to his 16th Wimbledon quarterfinals. Kohli's presence, alongside other notables like Roger Federer, Joe Root, and James Anderson, added to the event's glamour. In his Instagram story, Kohli wrote, 'What a match. Virat Kohli's Instagram story The relationship between Kohli and Djokovic is a fascinating tale of mutual admiration. Their friendship began through Instagram, with Kohli revealing in a 2024 BCCI video that he stumbled upon a message from Djokovic in his DMs. 'I was just looking at his profile on Instagram and pressed the message button, thinking I'd say hello. Then I saw he'd already messaged me,' Kohli shared, recounting how he initially checked for a fake account before realizing it was the tennis legend himself. This sparked a texting relationship, with the two exchanging messages over the years, celebrating each other's milestones. Djokovic has reciprocated this admiration, notably congratulating Kohli on his 50th ODI century in 2023 via Instagram and expressing a desire to perfect his cricket skills before visiting India. 'Virat Kohli and I have been texting for a few years. It's an honour to hear him speak nicely about me,' Djokovic said in a Sony Sports Network interview. Their shared passion for fitness and relentless pursuit of excellence has been a cornerstone of their bond, inspiring fans globally. Djokovic has won 24 Grand Slams and seven Wimbledon titles and will seek to add one more to the tally. After losing in the final to Carlos Alcaraz in the previous Wimbledon, Djokovic will want to bounce back and claim the victory this year. He will next face Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals.

Now the series is tied at 1-1 and the third Test will be played at Lord's from July 10. This performance was historic for Team India. Who will return to the team? Indian fast bowling attack leader Jasprit Bumrah was rested in the second Test but captain Gill has confirmed that he will play in the Lord's Test. Now the question arises, which player will be dropped? Who will get a chance, who will be out? After Akash Deep's performance, it is impossible to drop him from the team, while Mohammed Siraj also took seven wickets. Karun Nair, who scored 31 and 26, tried to make an impression in his first number three innings and will get another chance. Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy will also be retained in the team. Prasidh Krishna may be out Prasidh Krishna may be dropped as part of the possible change. He recorded figures of 0/72 and 1/39 in the match and proved expensive in the first Test as well. Jamie Smith's attack on Prasidh Krishna On the third day of the second Test, England's Jamie Smith thrashed Prasidh Krishna fiercely. In one over, he hit 4 fours and 1 six and scored 23 runs. This was a setback for India after Mohammad Siraj's brilliant start. Worst economy rate in Test history According to a social media post, Prasidh Krishna has now become the bowler with the worst economy rate in Test history (bowling at least 500 balls).
