LIfT BioSciences announces partnership with University of Galway for clinical trial in Ireland
London, 28 April 2025– LIfT BioSciences, ('LIfT' or 'the Company'), a rapidly emerging biotech and the global leader in neutrophil immunotherapies, today announces progress in advancing the planned clinical trial for their Immunomodulatory Alpha Neutrophils (IMANs), a first-in-class cell therapy designed to overcome treatment resistance in solid tumours, which will be conducted in partnership with the University of Galway, one of Ireland's leading cancer centres, and Hooke Bio, experts in clinical analytics and biomarkers.
IMANs work by recruiting and modulating the patient's own immune system to deliver a durable anti-tumour response. This strategic collaboration combines LIfT's innovative immunotherapy approach, the University of Galway's expertise in oncology, patient care, and advanced manufacturing, and Hooke Bio's analytical expertise. Together, this enhances LIfT's clinical-stage research capabilities, accelerating the pathway to delivering IMANs to patients and positions LIfT at the forefront of next-generation cancer immunotherapies.
Alex Blyth, Chief Executive Officer of LIfT BioSciences commented: 'We are thrilled to expand into Ireland and partner with the University of Galway and Hooke Bio to enhance our first-in-class IMAN therapy, which aims to transform cancer therapy by rejuvenating the immune system to overcome tumour resistance. This collaboration accelerates our clinical readiness and leverages Ireland's biotech sector, advancing our goal of delivering breakthrough treatments for cancer patients.'
This trial aims to show how IMANs can fulfill a crucial unmet need by enhancing innate immune competence, which has been lacking in current solid tumor immunotherapies. We will closely monitor immune system recruitment into the tumour, vital for maximising immunotherapeutic benefits. Preclinical results have already shown that IMANs effectively attract T cells and NK cells, suggesting that similar outcomes in our trial could lead to better efficacy, especially against therapy-resistant cancers. Partnering with researchers at the University of Galway positions us to accelerate this groundbreaking immunotherapy's development.'
Dr Michael McCarthy, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Principal Investigator at University Hospital Galway added: 'Cancer remains a devastating epidemic, claiming over 10 million lives every year, with many patients lacking an effective treatment option. IMANs represent a revolutionary approach, offering the potential to combat treatment-resistant tumours. We look forward to supporting LIfT in accelerating this therapy toward the clinic and further strengthening Ireland's leadership in advanced therapies."
The trial is designed to first test the feasibility and safety of IMAN therapy administered to patients with metastatic cervical cancer or head & neck cancer who have exhausted all standard treatment options, such as checkpoint inhibitors. We intend to test progressively higher IMAN doses in sequential patient cohorts until we define the biologically active dose. Then, the study will be expanded to additional patients who will be infused with IMANs at the previously defined recommended dose in combination with checkpoint inhibitor therapy. We expect this combination to enhance the recruitment and competence of both the innate and the adaptive arms of the immune system to deliver a comprehensive anti-tumour immune response from which patients can derive meaningful clinical benefit.
This news follows the recent announcement of the expansion of LIfT's manufacturing and clinical operations into Ireland, establishing the Company's presence in the European Union and providing access to the country's established centres of excellence and growing biotechnology sector. Following the completion of the current funding round, the company anticipates entering the clinic in 2026, pending final regulatory approvals.

Mapping Ireland's peatlands to help cut carbon emissions

Mapping more accurately than ever Ireland's peatlands, which are vital as carbon sinks but whose boundaries can be hard to determine, could help fight global warming, researchers say. Ireland is pockmarked with patches of dark brown peat soil that make up at least 20 percent of the land cover, according to Eve Daly, a geophysicist at the University of Galway, who co-led a groundbreaking project on finding peat. "Peatland soils contain comparable amounts of carbon to the likes of rainforests so a more accurate map can lead to better land management decisions and mitigate against greenhouse gas emissions," Daly told AFP. Her research team developed a new mapping approach using gamma radiation measurements to identify for the first time "transition zones" -- typically hidden under forests and grasslands -- where the soil changes from being peat to mineral-based. Daly says the area of soil in Ireland considered "peaty" has increased thanks to a new colour-coded "peat/non-peat" map produced by the researchers. "Improved mapping at higher resolution and locating where hidden organic peat soils are and their extent are key inputs into working out carbon emission factors," she said. Her project co-leader Dave O'Leary told AFP about 80 percent of Ireland had now been mapped out in patches of "peat" brown or "non-peat" green. "Few countries have invested in such an incredible data set, which puts Ireland at the forefront of peatland mapping research," he said. - 'New lens' - Land use, including farming and peatland draining, is a major source of Ireland's carbon emissions which could see the country failing to meet an EU-agreed climate target to cut emissions by over 50 percent by 2030. A recent report said Ireland risks an EU fine of almost 30 billion euros if it fails to reach the target and recommended the restoring -- and rewetting -- of thousands of hectares of peatlands to help deliver "massive" cuts in emissions. "We need to use more modern technologies or use old technologies with new lenses to try and find these hidden peat soils," Daly said. Ireland's boggy areas are typically located in the middle of the bowl-shaped country which is ringed with hills and low mountains around the coastal areas. Triven Koganti, an agroecology expert at Denmark's Aarhus University, told AFP that five percent of global greenhouse gas emissions came from cultivated peatlands. "Historical agricultural draining of peatlands... or to use them as a fuel source has led to significant greenhouse gas emissions," he said. So "an accurate accounting" of peatland boundaries is needed to achieve "current global initiatives to restore peatlands", he said, adding the Irish research "plays an important role in establishing this". - 'Bird's eye' technique - The mapping technique -- described as "bird's eye" by Daly -- is based on gamma-ray data measured by a sensor onboard a plane that has been flown low over Ireland for a decade in a state-funded geophysical survey. "All rocks and different amounts of soils give off a certain amount of natural radiation but peat doesn't as it's full of organic material," Daly said. Soils are usually a mixture of broken bits of rock, water and air, but peat soils are distinct from mineral soils as they are formed from decaying plant material, water and air, and contain a very high amount of carbon. When waterlogged, this carbon is stored in the soil but when water is removed, for example via drainage, peat soils then emit carbon dioxide as the decay process restarts, Daly said. The state-funded "Tellus" survey began in 2011 and is expected to be completed later this year. pmu/jkb/giv/dhw

See a young star potentially giving birth to a giant planet in new image from Very Large Telescope

Researchers have captured a mesmerizing image of what they believe to be a giant planet forming in the orbit of a young star, according to a new study. The image, taken with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile, shows the star surrounded by an eye-shaped disk of swirling gas and dust. A dark ring within the disk suggests that the gravity of a newborn planet, likely a gas giant, is accumulating material as it carves a path around the star. "We are talking about a fairly massive planet here, a few times the mass of Jupiter most likely," study lead-author Christian Ginski, a lecturer in the physics unit at the University of Galway in Ireland, told Live Science in an email. "It clears out a gap as it orbits because material falls down onto the planet. One might almost think of the planet like a hoover in that sense sucking up all the dust." This could be a rare example of a planet detected while still in its infancy. Ginski and his colleagues released a simulation of the potential giant exoplanet within the disk and hope to confirm its presence using the James Webb Space Telescope in the coming months. The researchers posted their findings Monday (June 9) to the preprint database arXiv, with the paper accepted for future publication in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. Related: Ginormous planet discovered around tiny red star challenges our understanding of solar systems Ginski and his colleagues are trying to learn more about the diversity of planetary systems and the forces needed to create a solar system similar to our own. They do this by seeking out young stars, which could be actively giving birth to new planets. Ginski noted that while researchers have detected several thousand planets around distant stars, these are all quite old. "We are basically looking at the meal after it is fully cooked," he said. "Young planets inside their forming disk help us to understand all the ingredients and how they interact with each other. So far we only have 1 confirmed such planet in its infancy and 2-3 more candidates which are not fully conf[i]rmed yet." The young star at the center of the new image is named 2MASSJ16120668-3010270, or 2MASSJ1612 for short, and is located 430 light-years from our solar system. A 2024 study noted the presence of a gap in the star's disk, so researchers already suspected that there could be a planet forming there. In the new study, 2MASSJ1612 was viewed in scattered near-infrared light for the first time, revealing previously unseen details, including two spiral arms emanating from the center of its disk. Ginski explained that the arms form because the planet is perturbing, or altering the disk, as it moves, creating what are known as density waves. He likened this effect to the ripples created by throwing a stone in a pond. RELATED STORIES —James Webb telescope spots 'groundbreaking' molecule in scorching clouds of giant 'hell planet' —James Webb telescope discovers frozen water around a distant, sunlike star —Scientists reveal 'most promising yet' signs of alien life on planet K2-18b "The stone is perturbing the water, sending out waves, somewhat similar to the planet in the disk," Ginski said. "Now think about the stone skipping over the water instead of just plunging into it. Ever more complex wave pattern are the result. In the disk, where the planet circles around the star, this leads eventually to the formation of these spiral patterns." Ginski noted that he has observed around 100 young star systems and that researchers typically find either the carved-out ring or the spiral structures, but in this case, the images revealed both — as theoretical models of planet formation predict. He said he felt like "a kid on Christmas morning" when he first saw the images. "Basically it appears we may be looking at an absolute textbook case here," Ginski said. "So that makes us think that we can predict what kind of planet is in this disk, and we think it should be one that we can actually take an image of with the right equipment (which is why we secured follow-up time at the James Webb Space Telescope)."

Power Metallic Acquires 167KM² from Li-FT Power, Expanding Nisk - Lion Polymetallic Project Area by over 300%

TORONTO, June 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ - Power Metallic Mines Inc. (the "Company" or "Power Metallic") (TSXV: PNPN) (OTCBB: PNPNF) (Frankfurt: IVV) is pleased to announce it has executed a definitive agreement dated June 9, 2025 to acquire a 100 % interest in 313 mineral claims totalling 167 km² from Li-FT Power Ltd. ("Li-FT") (TSXV: LIFT) (OTCQX: LIFFF) (FRA: WS0). The claims adjoin the Company's 45.86 km² Nisk property, where exploration is expanding the high–grade Lion Cu–PGE discovery and the Nisk Ni–Cu–Co deposit. On closing, Power Metallic's land position will grow more than 300% to ~212.86 km², securing approximately 20 km of strike on the northern basin margin and 30 km on the southern margin that envelope the Nisk, Lion, and Tiger discoveries. Nisk Project Area The Nisk-Lion-Tiger discoveries have established a new polymetallic district with considerable potential for additional deposits. These deposit types are globally rare but form clusters at district and camp scale (Noril'sk and Talnakh, Kevitsa and Sakatti, as relevant examples). Currently discovered polymetallic mineralization on the Nisk property has been confined to a major translithospheric structure along the sedimentary basin margin defining the locations of the Nisk, Lion, and Tiger discoveries (Figure 1 map of original Nisk targets overlain on geology). Work by Power Metallic and Li-FT has identified a larger region proximal to the Nisk property that has additional potential for polymetallic deposits. Significantly Power Metallic sees potential in the wider basin where exploration to date suggest conditions similar to those at the Nisk-Lion-Tiger discoveries. The land purchased from Li-FT covers a further 20 km of strike length along the northern margin of the basin that contains Nisk-Lion-Tiger, and the most prospective 30 km of strike length along the southern basin margin, which has been identified by Power Metallic through regional geophysics as prospective, and corroborated by extension soil and till elemental anomalies from surveys carried out by Li-FT (Figure 2 map of regional play with New property, showing relative size with original Nisk property). The control of the most readily accessible prospective geology proximal to the known mineralizing system (Nisk-Lion-Tiger) gives Power Metallic the opportunity to control the discovery of multiple polymetallic deposits within the identified regional system across both its 80% owned properties and its 100% owned properties. Steve Beresford, Director and Special Advisor, stated:"Polymetallic deposits have unique primary and secondary geochemical footprints (that contrast with Nickel dominant sulfide deposits like Voisey's Bay) that enable us to recognize early the tip of the iceberg i.e. extensions of Lion or mimics that represent new camp to district scale opportunities. We know a lot about how these deposits spatially cluster that's different to lode Au or VMS, and now is the time to own the whole opportunity". Purchase Agreement TermsThe purchase of the 100% interest in the claims (exclusive exploration rights) requires a $700,000 cash payment to Li-FT and the issuance of 6,000,000 common shares of the Company (the "Shares"). All the Shares will have a statutory hold period of four months and a day from issuance in accordance with Canadian securities laws. 3,000,000 of the 6,000,000 Shares will also bear a 12 month hold and restriction from transfer. Additionally, Li-FT will retain a 0.5% NSR on all acquired claims. The share–weighted consideration preserves cash for drilling while giving both Power Metallic and Li–FT exposure to the exploration upside in the basin. The issuance of the Shares is subject to the Company's receipt of approval from the TSX Venture Exchange. Fully Funded 100,000–Metre Drill Program Through 2026 The drilling rig has been collared on the first hole of the summer program. We are resuming work along the Nisk–Lion–Tiger trend while integrating its newly acquired LIFT claims—an expansion that increases the Company's land position more than 300%. Field crews will mobilize in successive waves beginning the last week of May, with camp upgrades—including grid–power wiring for new core–logging facilities—well underway. Drilling will initially recommence in the Nisk-Lion-Tiger area to expand current zones. It is anticipated that by early fall of 2025 the core facility capacity will be ramped up to six drills enabling quicker exploration target turnaround and flexibility to follow exploration successes on the expanded Nisk Project Area. Key elements of the work program District–scale data integration. Historical technical data from the LIFT claims are being compiled alongside existing datasets to refine regional targeting. Airborne & ground geophysics. A large–scale airborne EM survey—followed by targeted ground EM—will seek near–surface conductors. Systematic mapping and prospecting. Field teams will focus on areas highlighted by Li–FT's previous geochemical anomalies, moving from regional reconnaissance to detailed mapping and sampling as anomalies are confirmed. Follow–up drilling. Once preliminary geophysics and mapping results are interpreted, priority targets, primarily confirmed by EM, will be drilled through late 2025 and into the 2026 winter season. Terry Lynch, CEO, stated:"Consolidating the LIFT ground lets us apply the geological insights from Nisk across a district–scale footprint. With over 100,000 metres of fully funded drilling in front of us, we can systematically approach new sulphide occurrences while continuing to grow our established resources." JC Evensen, Strategic Advisor, added:"The opportunity to consolidate control of this emerging polymetallic mineral district will allow Power Metallic to fully explore and understand its potential before determining the value maximizing development pathway for all stakeholders involved. The discovery of Lion transformed how this area was understood geologically, and now, with the counsel of Steve Beresford on the board, Joe Campbell, Adam Findlay and the entire exploration team have an opportunity to see if there is something better than Lion to be discovered." A more detailed summer exploration plan—updated to reflect the expanded acreage—will be released within the next 2–4 weeks. Qualified PersonJoseph Campbell, VP Exploration at Power Metallic, is the qualified person who has reviewed and approved the technical disclosure contained in this news release. About Power Metallic Mines Inc. Power Metallic is a Canadian exploration company focused on advancing the Nisk Project Area (Nisk–Lion–Tiger)—a high–grade nickel–copper–PGE, gold and silver system—toward Canada's next polymetallic mine. On 1 February 2021, Power Metallic (then Chilean Metals) secured an option to earn up to 80% of the Nisk project from Critical Elements Lithium Corp. (TSX–V: CRE). Following the June 2025 purchase of 313 adjoining claims (~167 km²) from Li–FT Power, the Company now controls ~212.86 km² and roughly 50 km of prospective basin margins. Power Metallic is expanding mineralization at the Nisk and Lion discovery zones, evaluating the Tiger target, and exploring the enlarged land package through successive drill programs. Beyond the Nisk Project Area, Power Metallic indirectly has an interest in significant land packages in British Columbia and Chile, by its 50% share ownership position in Chilean Metals Inc., which were spun out from Power Metallic via a plan of arrangement on February 3, 2025. Neither the TSX Venture Exchange nor its Regulation Services Provider accepts responsibility for the adequacy or accuracy of this release.
