15 roads from Vizag to Bhogapuram Airport to be laid soon: Minister Narayana
Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) P. Narayana on Wednesday (May 21) said Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) will lay 22 roads from Visakhapatnam to the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport and that tenders have already been invited for 15 of the roads.
He was holding a meeting with the MLAs and officials from the undivided Visakhapatnam district at the VMRDA office here to review the status of various development projects of the VMRDA and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC).
Speaking to the media, Mr. Narayana said that the government is keen on completing the metro rail project in Visakhapatnam, which, he said, will be a double-decker model. He also said that plans are afoot to begin metro rail works from October 1 this year. 'Generally, it takes four years to complete a metro rail project, but Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered the authorities to complete it in three,' he said.
The Minister added that the government has also proposed a semi-ring road for Visakhapatnam, which can cater to about one crore people. The VMRDA is in the process of hiring consultants for this project.
TIDCO houses
Mr. Narayana said that during 2014-19, the then TDP government had planned to build seven lakh TIDCO houses and had invited tenders for about five lakh. However, during 2019-24, the previous YSRCP government reduced the number to 2.61 lakh, but still did not complete the project. To complete the houses, about ₹7,000 crore is required, he said, adding that Mr. Chandrababu Naidu has issued directions to complete the pending works. 'We have asked the officials to complete at least some of the houses by Vijayadasami this year,' he noted.
Mr. Narayana added that a new commissioner will soon be appointed to the GVMC.
He said that discussions were held regarding various aspects related to VMRDA infrastructure, Visakhapatnam-Kakinada Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region Urban Development Authority Metropolitan Jurisdiction Map; a revisit of the Master Plan 2041 and key points of the extended area.
Discussions were also held on MIG layouts; proposed new layouts under VMRDA; master plan priority roads; and issues concerning coastal erosion projects, integrated development of Kailasagiri and Rushikonda. Specific discussions took place regarding land issues in Simhachalam, Anakapalli land pooling, the Beach Corridor, six-lane roads to the Vizag Steel Plant and several VMRDA projects.
Several MLAs stressed the need to complete GVMC pipeline works to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply to the public. They also suggested building additional water tanks and highlighted the shortage of waste disposal vehicles and pushcarts in hilly areas.
MLAs Ganta Srinivasa Rao, P. Vishnu Kumar Raju, Palla Srinivasa Rao, Panchakarla Ramesh Babu, Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, Ch. Vamsikrishna Srinivas and Konathala Ramakrishna were present. District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad and VMRDA chairman Pranav Gopal also attended.
