Live Wire: Two Northampton music series return in time for summer
As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, we continue to look at places where outdoor music goes into full bloom.
This week, we highlight two relatively newer opportunities to experience live music alfresco, but both have definitely solidified into annual programs that many people look forward to.
Occurring just about two blocks away from each other, Northampton's Summer on Strong music series and its sister Bands on Brewster series have become mainstays of the city's vibrant summer music scene.
Summer on Strong is held on Strong Avenue, which gets closed off to regular traffic during the summer season. This creates a pedestrian-only outdoor café area where guests can purchase food and drink from vendors such as Progression Brewing, Familiars, Eastside Grill, Mulino's and Homestead. Other nearby venues include Fitzwilly's, The Dirty Truth, The Tunnel Bar, Moshi Moshi and Local Burger.
The idea for the series began in 2021 and grew out of the lack of indoor options during the pandemic. The series runs Thursday through Sunday each week. Here is a rundown of what to expect this month:
On June 12, Vernon David and Rob Fontana take the stage, with Ryan Hollander playing on June 13. The Dan Thomas Trio provides June 14's entertainment, with the Green Street Trio winding up the week on June 15, as they do each Sunday of the series. Tobey Sol Laroche kicks off the following week on June 19, followed by Bailey Hayes on June 20 and the Ian Behrstock Trio on June 21.
The month ends with Nate Martel on June 26, Tom Walz on June 27, and the Jimmy Gavagan Trio on June 28. All shows run from 5-8 p.m,
Just a few blocks away on the west side of town, Bands on Brewster is a series where bands play in the little courtyard set up between the Northampton Brewery and the E. John Gare Parking Garage. Shows run each Thursday from 6-8 p.m. This series began in 2023 and continues to be successful.
The schedule this summer runs as follows: June 12: Norma Dream; June 19: Wallace Field and Brittany Brideau; June 26: Avery Joi; July 3: The Greys; July 10: Simple Friend, Ribboncandy and King Radio; July 17: Hannah Mohan and Stefan Weiner; July 24: Lucia Dostal; July 31: The Hendersons; Aug. 7: Temporary Friends, Jeff Coyne; Aug 14: Gold Dust Aug. 21: Ruby Lou; and Aug. 28: Prewn.

Brittany Renner confirms her divorce to Kevin Gates. ‘I followed my heart'
Brittany Renner said she followed her heart and is getting divorced. (Warning: The below link contains language some may find offensive.) In a recent radio interview with REAL 92.3 LA, the 33-year-old 'Basketball Wives' star revealed that she and her husband, rapper Kevin Gates, are officially going their separate ways. 'We got married April 6 and divorced May 28,' Renner said in the interview, which aired June 7. The social media star says the couple must now enter a 90-day waiting period. The waiting period, known as iddah in Islam, is meant to ensure that a woman is not pregnant. Renner converted to Islam in August 2024, per Complex. 'And then also in those 90 days it's for reconciliation, because Allah wants you to stay married,' Renner explained. 'During those 90 days, you are not to entertain anybody romantically.' Renner and Gates, who converted to Islam in 2016, went Instagram official in April, according to E! News. The couple sparked engagement rumors the following month after Renner appeared at the season 12 premiere of 'Basketball Wives,' which aired May 5, with a ring on her ring finger. Renner later referred to Gates as her husband in a since-deleted Instagram post May 4, per E! News. 'You don't fit on this show and that's why you're a fit for this show,' Brittany wrote in the caption. 'Last night at the #BasketballWives Season 12 premiere party with my huzband.' Gordon Ramsay sightings in metro Detroit: Here's where
Was celebrity chef and reality cooking show star Gordon Ramsay in Detroit? It appears so. On various social media channels, there have been posts of Gordon Ramsay sightings. Those sightings included speculation that Ramsay and a crew were in town filming episodes of his new show, 'Secret Service" on the Fox Network. The show aims to examine major issues at struggling restaurants. Two metro Detroit restaurants that the celebrity chef allegedly may have visited included Boodles restaurant in Madison Heights and Firenze's Pizza in Warren. A June 3 Facebook post by Scanner of Warren showed pictures of Firenze's stating that Ramsay's "Secret Service" show was being filmed at the restaurant. According to the Firenze Restaurant and Pizzeria Facebook page, the family-owned spot on East 10 Mile Road in Warren is closed. The restaurant, the post stated, is reopening on Tuesday, June 10, with a "freshened up menu" promising customers that they will be "WOWWED!" by new menu items. What we do know, according to an Instagram post, is that Ramsay dined on June 8 at Grandma Bob's pizza spot in Corktown. 'We were honored and SO excited to have Chef Gordon Ramsey stop in to try our Detroit-style pie!,' according to the post. Grandma Bob's also asked, 'Wanna copy his order?!' and followed with: Caesar Salad 2 Greeks (the second Greek because he liked the first one so much) XL Pepperoni Sausage + Pistachio Pinot and Chianti The Free Press reached out via email to the FOX network, asking if Ramsay was filming the new show in the Detroit area. The network could not confirm if Ramsay's new show was filming here. A post on the website with a picture of Ramsay calls out for casting "struggling restaurants in or within 45 miles of Pittsburgh, Detroit or Cleveland." Ramsay's show, which premiered in May, is 'Gordon Ramsay's Secret Service.' Per the Fox TV network website, the weekly show features Chef Ramsay, with the help of a 'secret source' delivering inside restaurant intel on 'major issues facing each restaurant' that is featured on the episode. The source helps 'Ramsay infiltrate the restaurant after-hours for a dramatic nighttime black light kitchen investigation that reveals more filth and grossness than ever before' and other issues and problems the restaurant is facing. Ramsay is well known for his restaurants and various hit competitive TV shows, including Hell's Kitchen, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, MasterChef, MasterChef Jr., and Next Level Chef. On his shows, Ramsay is also known for his blunt and often in-your-face demeanor, bleeped-out foul language and harsh criticism. For the series, Ramsay followed chefs and traveled to remote places in the world seeking out "culinary inspiration, epic adventures, and cultural experiences," National Geographic's website said. The episode featured diving among shipwrecks, helping monks at the Holy Transfiguration Skete, a Byzantine Catholic monastery in the Keweenaw Peninsula. It also featured Ramsay teaming up with chef James Rigato of award-winning Mabel Gray in Hazel Park.
