New Attenborough film showcases both destruction and hope in planet's oceans
LONDON - British naturalist David Attenborough says there is hope for the future of the planet's oceans in a new film premiering later on Tuesday that sets out both the scale of damage caused by human activities and the oceans' capacity for recovery.
In his latest work "Ocean", Attenborough, one of the world's best-known nature broadcasters and filmmakers whose work spans seven decades, charts the challenges faced by the seas over his lifetime, from destructive industrial fishing practices to mass coral reef bleaching.
"After almost 100 years on the planet, I now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea,' he says in a trailer of the movie.
Its full release in cinemas on Thursday coincides with Attenborough's 99th birthday.
Tuesday's premiere in London will see both a glitzy event with celebrities and dignitaries walking a blue - not red - carpet in the evening, and a daytime screening for students and teachers.
Despite depicting the bleak current state of the health of the ocean, discoveries made during filming offer hope, Attenborough said.
"The ocean can recover faster than we had ever imagined, it can bounce back to life," he said.
"If we save the sea we save our world. After a lifetime of filming our planet I'm sure nothing is more important."
The film's release comes ahead of the United Nations Ocean conference in Nice, France, in June where it is hoped more countries will ratify a 2023 agreement to protect ocean biodiversity.
So far only 21 countries have officially signed, falling well short of the 60 countries needed for the agreement to come into force. REUTERS

Les Miserables The Arena Spectacular — a large-scale version of the acclaimed Les Miserables musical, which played over 200 performances in the West End — is coming to Singapore in March 2026, announced Base Entertainment Asia today (June 12). Taking place at Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands, the show is expanded from the classic Les Miserables The Staged Concert and will feature an enhanced production with new set and lighting designs specifically created for larger venues. The show, which is based on the original novel by Victor Hugo, will also include a company of more than 65 cast and orchestra members. Full casting will be announced soon. A production by British theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh, Les Miserables The Arena Spectacular is presented in Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia and is written by Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg. For those who aren't familiar, Les Miserables translates to 'the miserable ones' in English. The story of Les Miserables follows the journey of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who was sent to jail for stealing a loaf of bread in 19th century France as he encounters various people in his life and struggles to seek redemption. This will be the third time a Les Miserables production is in Singapore — the previous times being 2016 and 1996. The waitlist for Les Miserables The Arena Spectacular is now open at Base Entertainment Asia's website until June 22, 11.59pm. Priority sales will start from June 23 at 10am, and pre-sales will begin from June 24 at 10am. Public on-sale and early bird tickets will be available from June 26 at 10am and ongoing ticket sales will start from July 1 at 10am. Actor Zhang Yaodong makes TikTok debut to express gratitude for support over being a stallholder
The former Mediacorp artiste formally introduced his stall in his first-ever TikTok, after he was spotted manning the stall in early June. The 47-year-old filmed it within the vicinity of his stall, starting the video by briefly panning over the signboard to show its offerings. Tagging the location as a coffeeshop at Blk 9012 Tampines Street 93, the former Mediacorp artiste formally introduced his stall in his first-ever TikTok. He wrote in the caption: 'A new beginning. Thank you for being part of it. That day at the stall was a wake-up call. Your kindness gave me strength to reflect and figure out my next steps. The road ahead is mine to walk — and it's a path I've chosen for myself. I'll be sharing this journey with you.' In early June, a social media user posted the first sighting of Zhang standing in front of the cash register and appearing to be taking orders from customers. Amid the hustle and bustle, the user noted that he was polite and humble, and he was working that day because his employee had resigned. On March 18, a Facebook post by the Tampines Small and Medium Enterprises Association (TSMEA) indicated that Zhang's stall was newly opened during that period and serves traditonal steamed dishes like egg, meat, fish and prawns. Zhang said in his video: 'I know there were many friends, even loyal customers, who took pictures of me helping out here last week. I am very grateful for all the encouragement I've received on social media. 'I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people by my side who have been silently supporting me, as well as the friends who have come over after seeing the reports.' He also credited his long-time friend Catherine Chew for encouraging him to create a TikTok account. 'I'm touched by her sincerity, as well as her eagerness for the public to see another side of me. She has also introduced me to several bosses, who want to collaborate with me on TikTok in the future.' The bachelor's image took a hit in July 2024 when rumours surfaced about him fathering children out of wedlock with women of different nationalities. In November 2024, Zhang took to Instagram to commemorate his holiday to South Korea with his two daughters, confirming his fatherhood for the first time. In February, Mediacorp's talent management agency The Celebrity Agency stated it was no longer representing him and he has not participated in the filming of any new shows.
