NEW DELHI: A railway engineer credited with restoring the world's oldest working steam locomotive for running the Fairy Queen between Delhi and Alwar now has the task of transforming Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML, earlier known as Teen Murti) in Delhi.

, 67, as the PMML director.
Lohani, who has headed Railway Board, Air India and Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation in his long career, has been appointed "on contract basis for three years from the date of assumption of charge, or until further orders," the order issued on Wednesday states. He has been appointed "in the rank and pay of secretary to govt of India by keeping recruitment rules of the post in abeyance."
Known as a "turnaround specialist," Lohani's name figures in the Limca Book of Records' 2007 edition for earning four engineering degrees at the age of 21 in 1979. He is also a Guinness record holder in 1998 for running the Fairy Queen. He piloted the nomination of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Bodhgaya's Mahabodhi Temple as world heritage sites. He was heading ITDC in 2001-02 and is credited with substantially improving Delhi's Ashoka Hotel.
Lohani's blog lists "turning around sick corporations" among his main interests. At Air India, he launched the airline's longest nonstop between Delhi and San Francisco.

Passengers were seen gathering excitedly to board the train for the inaugural ride. Sheetal, one of the passengers, told ANI, ' It's a great thrill and will be a good experience for us that Modi ji paved the way for us to visit Kashmir from here. We are all very excited for the views that this journey will offer... We had booked our tickets just to experience the world's highest bridge... The architecture of the bridge is so beautiful... Initially, we were scared, but when Modi ji himself stood there yesterday, it gave us confidence that it would be a safe ride.' Abhishek Arora, a passenger from Gwalior, added, '... We had booked our tickets in the first slot, as soon as the bookings opened... We will go to Srinagar and come back the same day... We just want to see the world's highest bridge, which is the highlight of this journey... This is a big achievement and was next to impossible. It was pending for hundreds of years. It will benefit every sector...' Loco Pilot Praveen Kumar called it a historic moment when the entire rail network in India was connected from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. 'It is a historic moment to see the first passenger Vande Bharat train begin its journey from Katra to Srinagar,' said loco pilot Yadav, who is operating the inaugural service. 'The Prime Minister flagged off the train yesterday, and it truly marks a proud day for the nation as Kashmir is now connected to Kanyakumari through the Indian Railways network.' Loco pilot Manoj Yadav, who is operating the inaugural service, called it a proud day for the nation. 'It is a historic moment to see the first passenger Vande Bharat train begin its journey from Katra to Srinagar,' he said. 'The Prime Minister flagged off the train yesterday, and it marks a proud day for the nation as Kashmir is now connected to Kanyakumari through the Indian Railways network.' Talking about preparations for the journey, Yadav said, 'The entire route has been prepared with a focus on safety and passenger comfort. From the highest railway bridge in India to long tunnels, arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth experience. Special attention has been given to engineering challenges, especially while crossing the Chenab Bridge, where speed is reduced for safety.' On the train's special features, he added, 'The train has been modified to handle varying temperatures, especially as it enters colder regions like Banihal. Every aspect--from track design to onboard facilities--has been built with passenger needs in mind. Today's train is fully booked, showing how eagerly people waited for this moment. It's an experience for us and a matter of national pride.' Sharing his experience driving the train, he said, 'Today, the first passenger train is going to Kashmir, and this is a historic moment. I am on this train, and it feels good. The train is fully booked, showing how many people were waiting. This is the highest railway bridge, and the track is unique with high tunnels and bridges. Riding on it is a different experience, and you have to control the speed carefully to match the track conditions. Everything is going smoothly.' New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): After inaugurating much-awaited and world's highest railway arch bridge over the river Chenab during his day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that today's development works will enhance the development journey of Jammu and Kashmir. In a post on social media platform, X, PM Modi said, ' A journey to remember and a big boost to connectivity! Travelled from the Chenab Rail Bridge to Anji Bridge and thereon to Katra for the public meeting. Today's development works will enhance the development journey of Jammu and Kashmir' The architectural marvel Chenab Rail Bridge, situated 359 metres above the river, is the world's highest railway arch bridge. It is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. A key impact of the bridge will be in enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. The Vande Bharat train moving on the bridge will take just about three hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing the existing travel time by two to three hours. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, directly connecting the Jammu division with marks a major milestone in Jammu and Kashmir's railway connectivity. Before flagging off the trains, Prime Minister Modi interacted with school children onboard and also spoke with railway staff members present on the train. The new Vande Bharat Express service will reduce the travel time between Katra and Srinagar from the current 6-7 hours by road to just about 3 hours. The trains aim to provide a fast, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, and pilgrims. The train will run through the Anji Khad Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge in the world. These trains have been specially designed to operate in the cold climatic conditions of the Kashmir Minister Modi inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge - 'Chenab Railway Bridge' and India's first cable-stayed 'Anji Bridge' in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were present during the inauguration. Before the inauguration of the bridge on the Chenab, the Prime Minister inspected the railway arch bridges are part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir. The iconic Chenab Railway Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, is part of the Katra-to-Sangaldan stretch, connecting New Delhi directly with Kashmir via Katra. Situated in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chenab Bridge is an engineering marvel standing at a height of 359 meters above the riverbed. It will officially connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via rail for the first time in history. The project faced numerous engineering and logistical challenges due to the region's difficult terrain and seismic sensitivity. Yet, after years of meticulous work, the bridge now stands as a testament to India's technological prowess and commitment to inclusive marks a transformative chapter in India's infrastructural landscape, promising greater connectivity, economic growth, and social integration in the region. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is 272 km long USBRL project, constructed worth around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration.
