Adult pacifiers are a destressing tool, promote better sleep and help smokers quit, retailers and advocates say.
Adult pacifiers, unlike those for infants, appear to have multiple uses – they are a destressing tool, promote better sleep and help smokers quit, retailers and advocates say.
But the prolonged use of the pacifiers – which have become a trend in the recent days in China and other parts of the world such as South Korea and the US – could cause jaw stiffness, shifting teeth and, when used during sleep, choking, warn medical professionals.
Some retailers are selling more than 2,000 adult pacifiers a month, according to a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report on Aug 3.
The pacifiers, which resemble those made for infants but are larger in size, cost between 10 yuan ($1.80) and 500 yuan each on e-commerce platforms such as Taobao.
The Straits Times did not find adult pacifiers for sale on online shopping platforms based in Singapore; the ones for infants sold by local retailers on platforms such as Mothercare SG and FairPrice typically cost about $10 or more.
Online reviews for the adult pacifiers have been generally positive.
SCMP quoted a buyer describing the product as 'high quality' and saying it felt comfortable to use, without affecting their breathing.

Another said that it was helpful for coping with withdrawal symptoms from quitting smoking, while a third said it was a source of comfort when one is stressed.
On TikTok, several users from around the world shared that adult pacifiers help them to manage anxiety and sleep better.
Some even said the pacifiers were useful for coping with some symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder such as restlessness, impulsivity and difficulty in focusing.
However, some medical professionals are warning against the use of adult pacifiers. According to SCMP's report, D r Tang Caomin , a dentist in Chengdu, said extended use could lead to jaw stiffness, pain when chewing, and shifting of teeth if used for more than three hours daily.
He added that parts of the pacifier could become dislodged and inhaled during sleep.
Ms Zhang Mo, a psychologist based in Chengdu, noted that the popularity of such products may reflect deeper emotional needs.
She said the answer lies not in reverting to childlike comforts, but in facing one's problems directly.

UK targets Iranian oil magnate, four companies with asset freeze

The sanctions include an asset freeze on Iranian oil magnate Hossein Shamkhani, and on four companies operating in the shipping, petrochemical and financial sectors, according to a government notice published online. Britain said the network had facilitated hostile activity by the Iranian government, including efforts to destabilise the UK and other countries. Some of the companies were cited for acting on behalf of or at the direction of Shamkhani, who is accused of aiding Iran's overseas operations. Shamkhani was also sanctioned by the United States last month. The sanctions freeze any UK-based assets and bar British individuals and businesses from dealing with the designated parties. REUTERS

Turkish ports raise new barriers to Israel-linked ships, sources say

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox ISTANBUL - Turkish port authorities have begun informally requiring shipping agents to provide letters declaring that vessels are not linked to Israel and not carrying military or hazardous cargo bound for the country, according to two shipping sources. The move is another step Turkey has taken against Israel after it last year severed trade with the country, worth $7 billion annually, over its war in Gaza with Palestinian militant group Hamas. The sources said the harbour master's office had verbally instructed port agents to provide written assurances, adding that there was no official circular on the issue. One of the sources said the instruction applied to ports across Turkey. The second source said vessels arriving directly from Israel or departing to Israeli ports would no longer be permitted to dock at Turkish ports, according to information provided by the port authority of the northwestern province of Kocaeli. Turkish-flagged ships will also be prohibited from calling at Israeli ports, according to the source. The transport ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Top stories Swipe. The move could further complicate shipments to Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis have targetted ships in the Red Sea since 2023 in what they call an act of solidarity with Palestinians. NATO member Turkey has fiercely criticised Israel over its attacks on Gaza and called it a genocide against the Palestinians, a charge Israel denies. The new guarantee letters should state that vessel owners, managers, and operators have no ties to Israel, and that certain types of cargo, including explosives and radioactive materials or military equipment, are not on board en route to Israel, the second source said. US, EU lock in trade deal; US official sees auto tariff relief in weeks

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox WASHINGTON - The United States and the European Union on Aug 21 locked in a framework trade deal reached in July that includes a 15 per cent US tariff on most EU imports, including autos, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber. In a 3½-page joint statement, the two sides listed the commitments made, including the EU's pledge to eliminate tariffs on all US industrial goods and to provide preferential market access for a wide range of US seafood and agricultural goods. Washington will take steps to reduce the current 27.5 per cent US tariffs on cars and car parts, a huge burden for European carmakers, once Brussels introduces the legislation needed to enact promised tariff cuts on US goods, it said. US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the deal on July 27 at Mr Trump's luxury golf course in Turnberry, Scotland after an hour-long meeting that followed months of negotiations. The two leaders met again this week as part of negotiations aimed at ending Russia's war in Ukraine, with both lauding their trade framework deal as an historic accomplishment. The joint statement said the deal could be expanded over time to cover additional areas and further improve market access. A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly, said European carmakers could see relief from the current US tariffs within 'hopefully weeks'. 'As soon as they're able to introduce that legislation – and I don't mean pass it and fully implement it, but really introduce it – then we will be in a position to provide that relief. And I will say that both sides are very interested in moving quickly,' they said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. The joint statement was 'a play to hold each other accountable' and ensure that both sides carried out the pledges announced in July, the official said. 'We are trying to sequence with the European Union to make sure that... they feel sufficient pressure to obtain the mandate they need to begin the legislative process for reducing their tariffs, as they've promised,' the official said. 'We're confident that they'll do that. It's just good for all parties to make sure that everyone's on the same page and taking actions around the same time.' The statement said US tariff relief on autos and auto parts would kick in on the first day of the month in which the EU introduced the legislation, offering the prospect of retroactive relief for carmakers. It was not immediately clear when Brussels would start the legislative process. The joint statement noted that the US agreed to apply only Most Favored Nation tariffs from Sept 1 on EU aircraft and parts, generic pharmaceuticals and ingredients, chemical precursors and unavailable natural resources, including cork. It reiterated the EU's intention to procure US$750 billion (S$965 billion) in US liquefied natural gas (LNG), oil and nuclear energy products, plus an additional US$40 billion of U.-made artificial intelligence chips. It also repeated the intention for EU companies to invest an additional US$600 billion across US strategic sectors through 2028. Both sides committed to address 'unjustified digital trade barriers', the statement said, and the EU agreed not to adopt network usage fees. They also agreed to negotiate rules of origin to ensure that the agreement's benefits accrued predominantly to both trading partners. In addition, they said they would consider cooperation to ring-fence their respective steel and aluminum markets from overcapacity, while ensuring secure supply chains between each other, including through tariff quotas.
