Banu Mushtaq brought honour to Karnataka: Prakash Raj

on Friday hailed Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq for bringing laurels to Kannada by winning the first International Booker Prize for Kannada. It was an honour for the Kannada intellectual who also brought pride to Karnataka, he said.
He was speaking after Banu was felicitated at a function organised in the city by Abhiruchi Publications which celebrated its 30 years.
Raj recalled that he came to know Banu when she was writing for Kannada tabloid Lankesh Patrike. Mushtaq wrote stories in Kannada depicting women-centric struggles, injustice and discrimination against women and explained her inner voice in her writings.
Kannada writer Latha Mysuru highlighted the resistance from some Muslim community members during Banu's initial years of writing.
Her family not only faced ostracism but was also boycotted, prevented and restricted by her writings. However, the writer overcame such struggles and penned more than 40 books, including fiction, novels, and collections of short stories during her 40-year literary career, she said.
Banu thanked the International Booker Prize selection committee jurists for selecting her short stories. Recalling her Mysuru connection, Banu said she studied in a primary school in KRS, where her father served as a health inspector. She also stressed the need to protect the heritage buildings of Mysuru like the United Kingdom protected its heritage structures. There are a lot of similarities between London and Mysuru, like its palaces and its salubrious environment.
Banu said she would continue to fight against injustice and inequality as a writer and advocate.

The rainy weather, chai, pakoras, and mehndi made the experience wonderful." Another visitor, Amit Mishra, shared, "I enjoyed the poetry, the vibe, and the documentary. Box Office: Su From So scores a blockbuster second weekend of Rs 15 crore; Kannada horror comedy grosses Rs 35 crore in 10 days
Starring JP Thuminad, Su From So has been running in theaters for over a week. Also featuring Shaneel Gautham, the horror comedy has already emerged as a blockbuster in its home state. The Kannada new release marks Thuminad's directorial debut. It has now ended its second weekend on a good note at the Karnataka box office. Su From So grosses Rs 15 crore in 2nd weekend in Karnataka, crosses Rs 35 crore overall Bankrolled under the banner of Light Buddha Films, Su From So has been maintaining an excellent hold at the Karnataka box office. Arts training programme for Dalit students launched in Mysuru under SCSP and TSP scheme
For the first time, a six-month long training programme in classical music, light music, and folk music for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was launched under the SCSP and TSP scheme in Mysuru. Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa, who is also the Minister in charge of Mysuru district, inaugurated the arts training programme for hostel students in Mysuru at a function organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture at at Kiru Rangamandira on Kalamandira premises in Mysuru on Saturday. Classes will be held three days a week, with each session spread over two hours. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mahadevappa said that dance, art, literature, and music are among the most powerful mediums, capable of having a profound impact on society. 'These arts have naturally belonged to the oppressed communities, and our government is working to encourage and provide platforms for them,' he said. The initiative not only supports students in gaining proficiency across various fields, but also aims to culturally empower them and nurture cultural leadership that can influence society. 'Therefore, all students should make the most of this opportunity,' he said. He also appreciated the Department of Kannada and Culture for taking up the task of translating B.R.
