JOANN Fans, There's a Major Update You Need to Know About
Michaels acquired JOANN's intellectual property and private label brands, and will carry products from now-closed JOANN stores.
This includes the popular JOANN brand Big Twist yarn, a cult-favorite product.
This is part of a big expansion into sewing supplies and notions for the craft store.
If you're anything like me, the news that JOANN is closing was a devastating blow. I've spent hundreds of hours in the aisles of JOANN, and even though I stocked up at the going out of business sales, I'm going to miss shopping there.
The final JOANN locations just closed their doors at the end of May. But a surprising hero is stepping in to save some cult-favorite products from the grave.
Michaels stores just announced they have acquired the intellectual property and private label brands of JOANN. The Joann.com website now automatically redirects to the Michaels website, which reads "Welcome to Michaels, JOANN fans! It's hard to lose a store you love. We're here to help."
Michaels will be carrying select JOANN brands in stores, expanding their offerings in yarn, sewing supplies and sewing notions with more than 600 new items. The move is part of Michaels's larger expansion into sewing supplies and fabric. The chain did not acquire the physical storefront locations that JOANN used to occupy, but will be offering some bestselling JOANN items in Michaels stores.
What's the biggest JOANN product that's being rescued? It's the cult-favorite Big Twist yarn, which is popular among budget crafters (not to mention my go-to yarn brand). Big Twist is beloved because it has a lot of different colors and is a low-cost option for a hobby that can quickly get expensive. ($5 per skein of yarn doesn't seem like a big deal until you need 6 different colors — and don't get me started on running out of yarn halfway through a project!)
Big Twist yarn is noticeably softer and nicer to work with than other inexpensive acrylic yarn brands, which can be scratchy. But I'll admit I'm biased — sitting on my desk next to me as I write are coasters I made from Big Twist yarn.
Beyond my personal excitement (and the good news for crafters!), this is a big deal for two other reasons.
Michaels is on the move. They recently announced a 200% expansion to their party supplies, trying to fill the hole left by Party City closing. Now they are expanding their yarn and sewing supplies to help close the gap left by JOANN.
According to a press release we received, searches for 'sewing' are up 39% since last year on Michaels.com. Their expanded offerings featuring 600 new products will include sewing machines, thread, interfacing, batting, specialty scissors, sewing notions and more, aimed at both beginner and expert sewists. They are also expanding their yarn assortment by 25% to help feed the crochet crafting trend, ensuring a well-stocked yarn aisle for fiber arts fans.
Big Twist was JOANN's house brand yarn. It's a bold move for Michaels to carry Big Twist because Michaels already has a house brand yarn called Loops and Threads. Big Twist and Loops and Threads were direct competitors in the budget yarn space. It's like if Walmart started selling Target brands — it's a definite surprise, if you care about the niche world of cheap yarn, that is.
In my opinion, Big Twist is better quality. To put it politely, Loops and Threads does not have the cult-favorite product following that Big Twist does. With Michaels snapping up Big Twist to put back into distribution, it looks like Big Twist wins this round of the battle of the yarns, while crafters win overall with the expansion of Michaels's products.

These beloved Mexican restaurant chains have closed Arizona locations in 2025
Arizona has seen a slate of store and restaurant closures this year. While the closure of stores like Joann and Macy's may have generated a lot of chatter, Arizona has also seen several major Mexican restaurant chains unexpectedly closing their doors, much to the dismay of customers. Recently, eight Filiberto's stores scattered across metro Phoenix quietly closed. In addition to the closures of the 24-hour restaurants, Buqui Bichi and On the Border also closed stores around town. Here's everything to know about the recent Mexican restaurant chains that have closed stores in Arizona, including which specific locations were impacted. Eight locations of the popular Valley chain Filiberto's have quietly closed, some permanently, according to signs posted on the doors. The 24-hour drive-through Mexican restaurant has more than 50 locations in metro Phoenix alone. Originally started by the Tenorio family, the chain has franchised its locations to many different owners. The eight locations are all owned by the Compadres Group. These are the eight locations that closed: Phoenix: 2955 N. 91st Ave, 17224 N. 19th Ave. Apache Junction: 10749 E. Apache Trail Chandler: 930 E. Pecos Road Gilbert: 1397 E. Williams Field Road Peoria: 13972 N. 83rd Ave. Scottsdale: 9150 E. Indian Bend Road Avondale: 1440 N. Dysart Road Buqui Bichi, an award-winning Mexican brewery, closed its last remaining Arizona taproom in downtown Phoenix in late May. It was the brewery's second ever location in the U.S. In August 2023, they opened their first U.S. location in Chandler. In January 2024, they opened a second store in downtown Phoenix. The Chandler location closed in October 2024 and was replaced by Miel de Agave. In a statement to The Republic, co-owner Martin Hurtado said: "Ultimately, we decided to close because the menu wasn't aligning with what our customers were looking for, many were expecting more traditional or recognizable Mexican offerings. Unfortunately, the franchise owners weren't open to adjusting the menu to better meet those local preferences, so we felt it was best to step away." On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina closed all of its Arizona locations in February. The restaurant had three locations in the Valley: Mesa at 1710 S. Power Road, Peoria at 7873 W. Bell Road and Ahwatukee at 5005 E. Ray Road. All three locations show as permanently closed on the restaurant's social media pages. Michaels to close one of its two California distribution centers, laying off hundreds of workers
Michaels is closing one of its two California distribution centers and laying off hundreds of workers, a WARN Act notification revealed last week. The notice, filed on June 6, shows that Michaels will be shuttering its center on W. Sugar Road in Tracy, effective Aug. 4. A total of 229 employees at the Michaels facility are set to lose their jobs, the layoff report shows. Several companies have announced impending closures of their Central Valley facilities in recent months, including UPS in Stockton and the Blue Diamond Growers facility in Sacramento. Michaels still lists its Lancaster distribution facility as actively hiring on its website. The arts and crafts company has distribution facilities across the U.S. CBS News Sacramento has reached out to Michaels for comment about the Tracy facility's closure. Companies with a presence in California are required by law to file a WARN Act notice at least 60 days before a mass layoff.
