European Parliament chairs push for probe into death of Tibetan leader in Chinese custody

Hindustan Times02-05-2025
Two chairs of European Parliament have called for a probe into the 'suspicious' death of prominent Tibetan Buddhist leader Tulku Hungkar Dorje Rinpoche, according to a report by Dharamshala-based Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).
The report says the chair of the European Parliament's subcommittee on human rights MEP Mounir Satouri and the chair of the delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China MEP Engin Eroglu have jointly written to the Chinese ambassador to the European Union regarding the matter.
The report adds that the chair of the subcommittee on human rights has also sent a letter to the Vietnamese ambassador to the EU, echoing the concerns.
Rinpoche, who was the head of Lung-ngon Monastery in Gade County, Golog, Tibet, reportedly died while in Chinese custody in Vietnam in March.
'Both letters express grave concern and alarm over the unexplained circumstances of Tulku Hungkar Dorje's death and the subsequent cremation of his body in Vietnam without the consent of his family,' the CTA report says.
The chairs called on Chinese and Vietnamese authorities to ensure a transparent, independent and impartial investigation to determine the circumstances of Dorje's 'disappearance and subsequent passing'.
According to a statement released by the CTA last month, Rinpoche had been living in hiding in Vietnam since September 2024 due to 'persistent harassment' by Chinese authorities in Tibet. On March 25, he was reportedly arrested from a hotel room in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, in a co-ordinated operation involving the local Vietnamese police and Chinese secret services agents. He was sent to a local public security office on March 28, where he is said to have died the same day.
The Dharamshala-based Tibetan parliament-in-exile has also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Rinpoche, and disclosure of the findings of the investigation.

Slapped, punched and bitten: The horrific assault of a 15-month-old inside a Noida daycare centre

A 15-month-old girl was brutally assaulted by a nanny at a Noida daycare, with the incident caught on CCTV. The daycare owner allegedly did nothing to intervene. Police have arrested the nanny read more The parents also allege that despite their daughter's cries, the daycare owner, Charu, made no attempt to help or protect her. Image for Representation A 15-month-old girl was brutally assaulted by a nanny at a daycare in Noida's Sector 137, in an incident that has left parents across the city horrified and questioning the safety of childcare facilities. The assault, which was caught on CCTV, shows the toddler being slapped, bitten, dropped to the ground twice or thrice, and beaten with a plastic bat. Shockingly, the daycare owner was allegedly present but did nothing to intervene. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's what happened The shocking assault at Noida daycare Monica and Sandeep Kumar, parents of the 15-month-old girl, had been sending their daughter to the daycare in Sector 137 since May 21. Sandeep, who works in the IT department of a UK-based multinational company, had made sure to check the safety arrangements himself before enrolling her, including confirming that five CCTV cameras were installed across the premises. The daycare, run by the residents' association, is one of many such facilities operating in residential complexes across Delhi NCR. Charu, the daycare's owner, personally assured the couple of their child's safety. 'Before sending our daughter, we had checked all safety measures at the daycare. There were five CCTV cameras in all rooms, the hall, and kitchen areas. The owner assured us during admission that it's the daycare's responsibility to keep every child safe,' Sandeep told The Times of India. But on Monday, when Monica went to pick up her daughter, something felt wrong. The toddler was crying uncontrollably and seemed unusually distressed. Later, while changing her clothes, Monica spotted circular marks on both of her thighs. 'My wife asked the teachers about the bite marks, but was told she had some infection from home. She ran to a doctor immediately. The doctor confirmed it wasn't an infection, but marks of human teeth. He also told my wife that it appeared our daughter had been tortured because she was visibly scared. My wife came home and informed me. I left office without any delay,' Sandeep recalled. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD When they confronted the daycare owner, she flatly denied that any abuse had occurred. The couple requested CCTV footage to verify what had happened, but getting access proved to be an uphill battle. According to The Times of India, the staff claimed there were 'technical issues,' missing applications, and even snapped wires that delayed them from handing over the footage. The parents say the daycare kept stalling for four days until police intervened on Thursday. When the couple finally saw the recordings, they were horrified. The footage showed the attendant, Sonali, a teenager from Shahdara village, mercilessly punching the child, pushing her off a swing, dropping her onto the floor, beating her with a plastic bat, and even inserting a pencil into her mouth. A horrific video from a daycare in Noida has surfaced, showing a woman worker hitting and biting a 15-month-old toddler. A case against her was registered, and she was arrested. — Vani Mehrotra (@vani_mehrotra) August 11, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The parents also allege that despite their daughter's cries, the daycare head, Charu, made no attempt to help or protect her. Instead, they claim both the maid and the owner hurled abusive language and issued threats when confronted. What's next? Following the parents' complaint, police from Noida's Sector-142 station registered a case, conducted a medical examination of the toddler, and arrested the accused maid. Charges have been filed under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following the parents' complaint, police from Noida's Sector-142 station registered a case, conducted a medical examination of the toddler, and arrested the accused maid. File image/PTI In a disturbing twist, Sandeep told NDTV that another family in the same residential complex has now come forward, claiming their child also suffered abuse at the daycare. They, too, plan to file a police complaint. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I want action against the daycare owner and the attendant so that such an incident does not happen with another child. These were very tough days. I could not go to work. My wife could not sleep,' Sandeep said, describing the emotional toll of the ordeal. With input from agencies

Intel CEO to visit White House on Monday: Report

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan is set to visit the White House on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump called for his removal last week, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. Intel and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Tan is expected to have a extensive conversation with Trump while looking to explain his personal and professional background, the report said, adding that he could propose ways Intel and the U.S. government could work together, the report added. Tan hopes to win Trump's approval by showing his commitment to the U.S. and guaranteeing the importance of keeping Intel's manufacturing capabilities as a national security issue, the report added. Last week, Trump demanded the immediate resignation of Tan, calling him "highly conflicted" due to his ties to Chinese firms and raising doubts about plans to turn around the struggling American chip icon. Tan said he shared the president's commitment to advancing U.S. national and economic security.
