Animal rehab centre near Noida airport to be ready in a year
N oida: Construction has started on the animal rescue and rehabilitation centre near Dhanauri wetland to protect wildlife affected by the Noida International Airport project. The 10-hectare facility will house a veterinary hospital, quarantine unit and specialised enclosures for blackbucks, nilgai, monkeys and Sarus cranes. YEIDA is developing the Rs 3.5-crore project, upgrading it from a temporary to a permanent facility with a 30-year lease, following Wildlife Institute of India's recommendations. After the Central Zoo Authority gave clearance to the project earlier this year, a construction agency was selected to complete the project within a year. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida A biodiversity conservation plan, drawn up by WII in 2019, had found blackbucks and cranes were mainly found on the land acquired for the airport. Subsequent surveys, of the 1,334 hectares where the first phase of the airport is coming up and the surrounding villages within its 25-km radius, recorded the presence of 258 blackbucks and 76 Sarus cranes. Indian blackbucks are listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which puts restrictions on their capture or translocation. Sarus cranes, listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), are also protected under Schedule I of the Act. Other animals spotted on the land acquired for the airport project were nilgai, Indian gazelles, monkeys, golden jackals and jungle cats. Initially, the forest department was to construct the animal centre, but last Sept, YEIDA was appointed as the executing agency by UP govt. The centre is proposed to have a medical unit, separate animal enclosures and shelters, and a dedicated team of veterinary doctors.

Transformer snag sparks outages in Gurgaon societies
Gurgaon: Several societies along the Dwarka Expressway—from Sector 99 to 109—have been reeling under a major power crisis since Wednesday, with no consistent electricity supply for over 27 hours at some condominiums. Among the worst-hit are Imperial Gardens, Signature Global Grand Iva, Suncity Avenue, Joyville, BPTP Amstoria, Signature Global Solera, ATS Tourmaline, and Adani Oyster, where power supply has remained erratic since Wednesday afternoon. This has forced them to rely heavily on costly diesel generators to manage basic needs. Officials at DHBVN said the outage was triggered by a fault in the feeder line of one of the societies, which caused a transformer at the 220 kV substation in Sector 107 to trip. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida "We shifted the load to another transformer on Wednesday, but it also tripped early Thursday. That unit was charged by 8 am. But due to the continuous rain, some feeders could not be re-energised. Most have been restored, and we are testing the remaining lines," the official said. Kamal Malhotra, a resident of Adani Oyster, said their society had been running on diesel backup since 3 pm on Wednesday afternoon. "We were without power for nearly 27 hours, and the power supply was restored around 6:30 pm on Thursday. The DG rate is Rs 25 per unit—it's unsustainable. We have raised repeated complaints with DHBVN, but nothing has been resolved," he said. Sunil Sareen, vice president of Imperial Gardens in Sector 102, said, "Around 4 to 5 societies have been connected to a single jumper, so when one fault leads to the collapse of the whole system. This kind of load management leads to frequent malfunctions. In just two months, we've spent over Rs 20 lakh on diesel and repair work. There is a need for attention and thorough investigation," he said. Santosh Kumar, who lives in Pareena Laxmi, Sector 99A, said, "On Wednesday, there was no power from 11 am to 3 pm, then again from 5 pm to 9 pm.
