U2's Bono reveals he lived on airline food at 14 after death of his mother

Bono has revealed that he lived off instant mashed potatoes and airline food after his mother's death. The 65-year-old Irish singer was just 14 when his mother died of a sudden aneurysm while attending her father's funeral. The tragic event took place in 1974, and Bono revealed that his family struggled domestically after her sudden death. The U2 frontman told Ruthie Rogers – the owner of the London restaurant The River Cafe – on Ruthie's Table 4 podcast: 'My relationship with food changed, I just saw it as fuel as something to get done, I took no pleasure in it. 'Do you know what Cadbury's Smash is?' He then asked if he could read from his book. He detailed that he, his brother, and father struggled to cope without their mother, but coped by eating pre-made airline dinners made available because Norman worked at Dublin airport. 'He [Norman] had talked the company into allowing him to bring home surplus airline food, prepared for airline passengers. The meals were sometimes still warm when he carried them in their tinned boxes into our kitchen,' Bono read. He described the dishes, such as gammon steak with pineapple and lasagna, 'exotic,' but had 'an aftertaste of tin', which is what they ate routinely for at least six months. The singer also read what they would do before the airline food came into play, mostly eating out of cans. 'Most days I would usually return home with a tin of meat, a tin of beans and a packet of Cadbury's Smash [instant mashed potato].' He continued to read from the book: 'We used to buy a cheap fizzy drink called Cadet Orange because it had enough sugar to keep you going, but was so foul you wouldn't want anything else down your throat for hours. 'We drank it after I would spend my food money on things far more important, like Alice Cooper's 45 Hello Hooray.' Bono was a founding member of the Irish rock band, which formed in 1976 while they were attending Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. More Trending Across nearly five decades, U2 have released 15 studio albums and are one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold an estimated 150–170 million records worldwide. They've also won 22 Grammys, eight Brit Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. As a teenager, Bono began dating his future wife, Alison Stewart, who was also in the same year as his bandmate David Howell Evans, best known as The Edge. At school, Alison briefly dated The Edge, which Bono joked was still a sore subject between them. Got a story? Ronnie Wood urges people to look after wildlife before there is ‘nothing' left

The star joined the Tusk Turtle Trail campaign and designed one of the 16 life-sized turtle sculptures to help raise funds and awareness of endangered marine species. Launched by African wildlife conservation charity Tusk, the installations are positioned at sites across central London including Covent Garden, Carnaby Street and the top of The Shard. The street art can also be found at St James's Market, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, with the aim of encouraging passers-by to 'pause, reflect and engage with urgent marine conservation issues'. Wood, 78, is an ambassador of the charity and helped design one of the sculptures, titled The Prodigal, which is in Carnaby Street. He told the PA news agency: 'It was great fun to do the turtles. 'It's wonderful. There's a whole brigade of them. 'If we don't look after the animals now, there'll be nothing for our children to see in the future.' The guitarist added that he hopes the campaign will encourage people to 'appreciate what your surroundings hold and especially the wildlife and the flora and the fauna. You know, look after everything that goes up around us. 'I think the future of Tusk relies on if we can raise enough money with these turtles to keep the whole project going and the whole message going.' The 16 installations will remain until the end of August before going up for auction in mid-October, with the funds supporting Tusk partners' marine conservation projects. The charity led similar campaigns between 2018 and 2023 with rhino, lion and gorilla trails. Other stars who helped design a sculpture for the Tusk Turtle Trail included Irish actor Andrew Scott, Dragons' Den stars Deborah Meaden and Steven Bartlett, artist Hannah Shergold and Fawlty Towers star John Cleese and his wife Jennifer Wade. Cleese told the PA news agency: 'These people like Tusk are doing a great job. 'We got involved because of my wife. 'She is passionate about photography and all sorts of conservation projects, and we got sucked in. The first thing we did was a lion, and then we did a wonderful gorilla.' The comedian added that they named their turtle sculpture Teddy after their cat, who died earlier this year. He said: 'We've christened this little tortoise Teddy to remind us of those happy days.' Wade said: 'Teddy was a really amazing cat, Maine coon, and he was, like, one in a million. And he's really unique. But with turtles and the conservation we don't want one turtle to be one in a million. We want people to realise that all these turtles need to be saved, and there's species, and there's so many things that people can do to help save them. 'In other words, Teddy's unique to us, but we want all the turtles to be Teddies in the world. That's what we feel.' Wade said she and Cleese have been supporting the charity for about five years. She said: 'Tusk is amazing. Also, because it's a smaller conservation, and the people, you feel like it's part of a family, and you feel like you're actually doing some good. We've loved it.' Nick Bubb, chief executive of Tusk, said: 'Marine turtles have navigated our oceans for over 100 million years, yet six out of seven species are now threatened with extinction. From entanglement in fishing gear to plastic pollution and rising sea levels, human activity has decimated turtle populations across the globe. 'The aim of the Tusk Turtle Trail is to inspire collective action to celebrate and protect one of the most ancient and endangered marine species.' Bidding for the sculptures will begin on Monday.

The UFC star, who turned 37 on Monday, could be seen smiling and snapping pics with Dee aboard the luxury yacht off the coast of Italy. Pictures from his luxury yacht trip in Italy show the MMA fighter sparring and soaking in the sun alongside Dee. In moments, Conor could also be seen gently patting his partner on the bum on the expensive boat, which was adorned with balloons in the colours of the Irish flag. Dee had shared a birthday tribute to Conor earlier this week, amidst the explosive allegations about the fighter's behaviour. Not only has the fighter come under fire for snogging the mystery brunette on a Florida beach but US rapper Azealia Banks has accused him of sending her unsolicited "d*** pics". The 212 hitmaker shared the explicit photos that allegedly show the UFC brawler on X, alongside his threat 'don't be a rat cos (sic) all rats get caught'. While Dee - who's dated Conor for 17 years - hasn't commented on Azealia's claim or the fighter's holiday snaps, she's weathered even more sensational accusations levied against him in the past. There have been alleged affairs, punch-ups outside the ring and Conor being forced to pay £206,000 in damages to a woman who accused him of 'brutally raping and battering' her. Mum-of-four Dee, 37, has stood by Conor throughout. This comes as Conor was seen at a birthday dinner with the same mystery woman he was snogging on a beach last week. The same day as the dinner, Dee Devlin - McGregor's fiancee - wished her partner a happy birthday. They have been engaged since 2020, and they share four children together. She shared a post from a fan account which read: "Happy Birthday to the person who always keeps Dee entertained and makes her smile." Prior to his beach encounter, the MAM fighter was spotted cosying up to a mystery blonde in a nightclub birthday bash. The star was seen in a Dublin nightclub getting close to a fellow reveller. The former UFC champion was pictured smiling with his hands around a blonde woman's waist. A shocked fan snapped the pair on July 6 at Soho nightclub in the Irish capital. On top of his behaviour in Florida and Dublin, Conor has found himself in his latest spat with rapper Azealia Banks, who alleges that the fighter sent her the photos on X unprompted - despite her not following him back. The rapper claims the messages were sexual harassment, but also said that she sent the boxer nude pictures as well in a sexting-back and-forth since 2016. MCGREGOR'S LEGAL ISSUES Last year, the MMA star was found liable in a civil case that accused him of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room in December 2018. It was alleged that he had choked the claimant, leading to her fearing for her life. He disputes the charges, arguing that they had consensual sex. A second woman accused him of sexual assault following a June 2023 incident at an NBA Finals game in Miami. The 49-year-old victim accused an "intoxicated" of slamming her face against a bathroom stall and placing her in an armlock before raping her. The woman alleged that McGregor engaged "in unlawful sexual contact" to fulfil his "own sexual gratification" and to "degrade" her. Florida prosecutors, however, declined to pursue criminal charges for the alleged assault with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, citing insufficient evidence in the case back in October 2023. McGregor denies any accusations of wrongdoing.
