Balika Ashram inmate found dead in HP's Mashobra
Shimla, June 13 (UNI) A 19-year-old girl staying at Balika Ashram in Mashobra was found hanging near the staircase of the premises on Thursday, in what is being treated as a case of suicide.
The deceased, originally from the Chamba district, was discovered by fellow inmates, following which the local police and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team were informed. The preliminary investigation suggests that the girl died by suicide.
Superintendent of Police (additional charge) Shimla, Gaurav Singh, confirmed the incident and stated that early findings point towards suicide, though the exact circumstances are still under investigation.
The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. Statements of staff members and other residents of the Ashram are being recorded. The body has been sent for post-mortem at IGMC Shimla.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the Ashram, which houses young girls from vulnerable backgrounds. Authorities have assured that the matter is being handled with utmost sensitivity, considering the victim's background and the institution's nature.
Balika Ashram, operated under the Department of Women and Child Development, Himachal Pradesh, is meant to provide care and protection to girls in need. Officials from the department are also expected to visit the Ashram to review the circumstances and provide counseling support to other inmates.

Chittoor: Senior Civil Judge and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), MS Bharathi noted that elderly parents who are neglected by their sons or daughters are legally entitled to claim maintenance under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). She held an awareness programme at an old age home in Tapovanam in Chittoor on Friday, which was organised as per the directives of the Supreme Court and the State Legal Services Authority. During the event, Judge Bharathi interacted with the elderly residents, inquiring about their health, the medical services being provided, pension disbursement, and any other issues they may be facing. She encouraged them to voice their concerns, assuring that legal help is available free of cost through the DLSA. Speaking at the event, she highlighted that in many cases, elderly parents transfer property to their children through gift deeds, expecting care and support in return. However, when the children fail to fulfill their responsibilities, the parents have the right to approach the court under Section 144 of the Code of Civil Procedure to revoke such deeds. Judge Bharathi reiterated the commitment of the District Legal Services Authority to provide free legal services to the elderly in such matters. She also stressed the importance of awareness about the constitutional rights and protective laws available to senior citizens. Former president of the Retired Employees Welfare Association Kesavulu, Murali, staff nurse Aruna from the Disabled Welfare Hostel, and several elderly residents of the ashram participated in the programme.

Police arrest 2 in influencer murder case
Chandigarh, June 13 (UNI) The Bathinda police have arrested two persons in social media influencer Kanchan Kumari aka Kamal Kaur murder case. Sources said that the arrested have been identified as Jaspreet Singh Mehron and Nimrajit Singh Harike, who are the aides of Nihang Amritpal Singh Mehron. Amritpal Singh Mehron had reportedly claimed responsibility for the murder alleging that the controversial social media influencer had used 'Kaur' to defame Sikh history and culture. Telangana HC extends interim relief to CM Revanth Reddy in defamation case
HYDERABAD: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Thursday extended interim orders in favour of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy until June 27 in a case related to alleged defamatory remarks made by him during a public meeting in Kothagudem last year in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The orders were originally passed on April 25 in connection with a criminal quash petition filed by the chief minister. The CM reportedly accused the BJP of planning to abolish reservations if voted to power and is also alleged to have displayed a morphed video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The BJP maintains that the remarks and visuals were aimed at damaging the party's image. Kasam Venkateswarlu, a BJP supporter, filed the complaint that led to the present criminal proceedings. The case is currently being heard before the Principal Special Judicial First Class Magistrate for Excise Cases. In his interim order, Justice Lakshman has also dispensed with Revanth Reddy's personal appearance before the trial court. During the hearing, the CM's legal counsel argued that the statements were made in a political context and should not be construed as defamatory. Revanth acquitted in 2023 case Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was on Thursday acquitted by a local sessions court in Nampally in a case related to the alleged offensive remarks he made against police when he was TPCC chief in August 2023. The court noted that the accused was found not guilty of the offence punishable under Sections 294 B (uttering any obscene song or words in or near a public place), 189 (threat of injury to any public servant) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC. The accused was also acquitted under Section 248(1) CrPC. According to the complaint, the then TPCC chief, during a press meet organised at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on August 14, 2023, threatened to strip and beat up the Mahbubnagar police. Political leaders should reflect on how inappropriate it is to criticise the police by making baseless accusations and humiliating allegations, the complaint said and added, 'In recent times, some political leaders are trying to demoralise the Telangana police with such cheap words for their personal popularity.' However, due to lack of evidence, the court acquitted him.
