‘Disgusting and deliberate': Second man arrested over spreading of slurry on Ballymena Pride route

The
Police Service of Northern Ireland
(PSNI) said they arrested the man after officers on patrol in the Granville Drive area observed slurry on the road at about 2.55am on Saturday.
The man will appear at Coleraine Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with criminal damage, possession of an article with a blade or point and causing material to be deposited on a road.
Police earlier said the matter is being treated as a hate crime.

The PSNI on Sunday said it had arrested a second man in connection with the inicident. The 20-year-old man was detained on suspicion of criminal damage, aiding and abetting criminal damage and causing material to be deposited on a road. He remains in custody.
Commenting on the incident, Northern Ireland's Minister for Justice Naomi Long said: 'I despair the mentality of those who spread slurry on the streets of their town motivated by hate and bigotry. Disgusting in every sense of the word.
'Solidarity to all at Ballymena Pride. It's a frightening time but love will always triumph over hate.'
North Antrim Alliance MLA Sian Mulholland condemned the incident. She said the Pride parade would be the first in the town's history.
'I want to unreservedly condemn those who spread slurry on the streets of Ballymena in advance of the town's first-ever Pride parade today,' she said.
'There is no place for this kind of disgusting and deliberate attempt to intimidate, disrupt, or shame those taking part in a peaceful and joyful celebration of love, identity, and community.'

'I have spoken directly with the parade organisers and the PSNI, and our team has engaged with Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to ensure cleansing takes place urgently and the route is made safe and welcoming for all.
'Ballymena Pride is a historic and hopeful moment for our town. No amount of hate will drown out the message of inclusion, solidarity, and pride that today represents.
'I would urge anyone with any information about the incident to contact police or report it anonymously via Crimestoppers.' – PA

Man concerned for his safety after possessing 58 indecent images of children, court told
In March 2020, Michael McCollum was handed a four and a half year sentence after he admitted 17 sex offences. A convicted sex offender appeared in court today charged with having 58 indecent images of children. Appearing at Ballymena Magistrates Court by video link from HMP Maghaberry, 27-year-old Michael McCollum was charged with two offences, both alleged to have been committed on 16 July last year. McCollum, from Curragh Hill in Carnlough, is charged with making and possessing 58 indecent images of children. The court heard that McCollum 'does not want to be released' due to concerns over his own safety. Michael McCollum A prosecuting lawyer said the 'full file will be received by 11 September' so she was seeking a four week adjournment. Defence counsel Grant Powles raised no objection to that and accordingly, District Judge Nigel Broderick remanded McCollum back into custody and adjourned the case to 18 September. McCollum was last in court in February this year when he was ordered to complete 100 hours community service for breaching the police sex offenders register on the same date as his latest offending. The earlier court heard how McCollum had failed to notify police of a change in his home address. In March 2020, McCollum was handed a four and a half year sentence split between 18 months in custody and the rest to be spent under supervised licence after he admitted 17 sex offences. Today's News in 90 Seconds - August 21st Those offences, committed between 31 December 2018 and 1 March 2019, included five counts of breaching an earlier Sexual Offences Prevention Order, six counts of making or possessing prohibited and indecent images of children at categories A and B, two counts of sexual communication with a child and four counts of causing or inciting the boys to engage in or watch sexual acts. In that case, Antrim Crown Court heard how the PSNI were alerted to McCollum's online activities by Lancashire police after they had been contacted by the parents of two ten-year-old boys. The parents had discovered that a man with the moniker 'almost there 19' had befriended the boys and was chatting to them via Instagram. 'Sexually graphic cartoon picture messages had been sent, along with sexual communication where the male involved had masturbated via video chat with a boy and had actively encouraged both boys to perform sexual acts on themselves so that he could watch,' said prosecuting counsel Suzanne Gallagher. By interrogating web service providers, Lancashire cops were able to trace the IP address to McCollum's home in Carnlough and when it raided by the PSNI, officers seized numerous electronic devices, the possession of which formed part of the SOPO breaches. Examinations of those devices uncovered that McCollum had downloaded and saved eight images at category A and further images at categories B and C. Category A, Ms Gallagher explained, showed images involving penetrative sexual acts coupled with sadism or bestiality, those at B portrayed showed non-penetrative sex acts while those at C involved children 'modelling' in clothing. Arrested and interviewed, McCollum told police 'he had no friends or support at home' so he had gone online and met the boys. The court heard he claimed he had 'intended to talk to them about gaming but soon his weakness would show and sexually explicit messages would be sent and requests for video chats where masturbation could take place.'

The Belfast Irish language and civil rights activist is no stranger to battling for justice after her sister Rosaleen McDonald and husband Mervyn were murdered by loyalists in front of their toddler and six-month-old baby at their Newtownabbey home in 1976, in what is still among the most shocking murders of the entire Troubles. And Máire's republican father Eddie Keenan was interned along with Brendan Behan in the 1940s, while her mother Mary went on hunger strike. Máire told Sunday World the PSNI officer said: 'I'm sorry, but you have to give us this information in English – we can't translate this. 'He said 'if you don't give us your name in English, we will arrest you'. I just kind of looked at him thinking 'did he really say that considering what we'd fought for the Irish Language Act?' But she says her decision to use Irish runs deeper than that for her. 'My daughter was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour for speaking Irish [in 2006],' she explained. 'If the police come anywhere near me, my name will always be in Irish. 'It's a matter of principle when we fought for an Irish Language Act.' And she said she was delighted to land such an important role in the Kneecap film. 'Naoise's [Ó Cairealláin – Móglaí Bap in Kneecap] daddy and my daddy were great friends, so I think it was on the friendship of the family that I got the part,' she explained. 'I was a dinner lady in the Irish school my daughter teaches in, Coláiste Feirste. I signed up with Northern Ireland Extras and it was the first time I had been asked to do something. Like Kneecap, whose outrage about what's happening in Palestine stirred controversy in the US and UK, Máire says she intends to continue speaking up for its people like she did recently on BBC Question Time, an incident which has gone viral. She added: 'I've been brought up with a very strong socialist and community background, where standing up for what you believe in is even in my DNA and not remaining silent in injustice.' After around five hours in police custody last Saturday, no charges were brought against the west Belfast woman. She added: 'They told me they were releasing me and gave me my T-shirt back. I had been arrested for a T-shirt that's illegal and they let me go out wearing the same T-shirt. 'I don't know whether they are going to charge me under terrorism or under obstructing arrest. They just said they have a file and they are sending it to the Public Prosecution Service.' We asked the PSNI why Máire was arrested while a man wearing a similar T-shirt was cautioned. A spokesperson said: 'Policing decisions are taken impartially and have to be considered within the individual circumstances relevant to any specific case. 'In recognition of language diversity, the Police Service of Northern Ireland provides free interpretation and translation services on request, including both face-to-face and telephone interpreters, and dedicated support for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. 'Any arrests are based solely on reasonable grounds that a crime has been committed or is about to be committed.'

Fly infestation at Belfast flats after body of elderly man lay undiscovered for weeks

Ms Jackson said: 'A few days before that we'd noticed a really bad smell in our flat, but we didn't really know where it was coming from. Today's News in 90 Seconds - August 21st 'My mum said the smell was also really bad out in the back garden, so we phoned the Housing Executive. 'Mum then asked if I had seen our neighbour recently. He was elderly and kept himself to himself. 'You would only have seen him every once in a while, and I hadn't seen him for a few weeks, so we wondered if maybe something had happened to him.' The Housing Executive asked her to check his windows for any sign of him. She explained: 'It's a block of four flats and I live in the flat above his and across, so I would be in the top left flat and he was on the ground floor and to the right. Officers told her he appeared to have been dead for three or four weeks. She added: 'We spoke to the Housing Executive and they said someone would come to clear out the flat, but first they wanted to see if there was any next-of-kin, in case they wanted any of the deceased's possessions. 'Then they said there was no next-of-kin. We gave them a few days, but there was still nothing. It's been a nightmare.' The Housing Executive told the Belfast Telegraph a contractor visited the property on Tuesday morning. It said: 'Sadly, an elderly tenant died at this property recently and unavoidable legal and investigative processes have had to be followed before the property could be returned for re-let. Those processes have now been concluded. 'Our maintenance team are now assessing what further improvement works are required to ensure the property is suitable for reallocation. It comes as the Housing Executive is being investigated by the Public Services Ombudsman over concerns about how it handles complaints. Ombudsman Margaret Kelly said: 'Access to good quality housing is an essential foundation for maintaining health and well-being and vital for enabling our children to achieve their full potential. 'When public services don't get it right, it is important they have an effective complaints process which can be easily accessed and has a focus on addressing concerns quickly and fairly.'
