Ex-Trump lawyer Eastman loses round in fight to keep California law license

Reuters16-06-2025
June 16 (Reuters) - A California judicial panel has upheld a recommendation that attorney John Eastman should be stripped of his law license for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election on behalf of Donald Trump.
The Friday ruling, opens new tab from the State Bar Court of California's appeals division tees up Eastman's case for final review by the California Supreme Court, which has the final say on attorney disciplinary matters in the state.
Eastman violated California attorney ethics rules against misleading courts and making false public statements, the bar court's Review Department found in a 103-page ruling.
"Whether in the courts, to former Vice-President Pence and his staff, or to the public, Eastman consistently failed to be honest," the Review Department said.
Randall Miller, a lawyer for Eastman, said they would appeal Friday's decision to the state's high court. Eastman had argued to the bar court's Review Department that his rights to free speech and due process were violated by state bar prosecutors, and complained that he was singled out for punishment by the judge who heard his case.
George Cardona, the State Bar of California's chief trial counsel, praised the ruling in a statement on Friday night, calling it "a powerful and timely reminder that whoever they are and whoever they represent, attorneys must remain true to the ethical rules that govern their conduct and respect the rule of law."
A judge on California's State Bar Court recommended Eastman's disbarment in a March 2024 decision that said his plan to derail Democrat Joe Biden's 2020 election victory "was unlawful and lacked any factual or legal support." Eastman's license was suspended after he was recommended for disbarment.
Eastman separately has been indicted in Arizona and Georgia state courts for his efforts to overturn Biden's election victory in those states. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
A former law professor at Chapman University in California, Eastman drafted legal memos suggesting then-Vice President Mike Pence could refuse to accept electoral votes from several swing states when Congress convened to certify the 2020 vote count. Pence rebuffed his arguments, saying he did not have legal authority to do so under the Constitution.
Trump was also represented by Eastman in a long-shot lawsuit at the U.S. Supreme Court that sought to invalidate votes in four states where the Republican former president had falsely claimed evidence of widespread voter fraud.
Eastman repeated many of those claims at a rally outside the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, after which a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and delayed congressional certification of the election.

TSX futures fall as investors brace for action-packed week

Aug 18 (Reuters) - Futures tracking Canada's main stock index dipped on Monday as investors reined in big bets ahead of a busy week featuring Ukraine peace talks, a key U.S. central bank conference and domestic inflation data. The futures on the S&P/TSX index (.SXFcv1), opens new tab fell 0.1% by 05:52 a.m. ET (0952 GMT), after a 0.5% gain last week for the S&P/TSX Composite Index (.GSPTSE), opens new tab index, helped by expectations of interest rate cuts in the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders later on Monday to advance peace negotiations. The meeting follows Trump's talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, which failed to produce a peace agreement. Ahead of the Trump-Zelenskiy meeting, gold prices eked out modest gains, supported by lower U.S. Treasury yields. Oil prices rose as investors awaited more clues from the meeting. Another key event this week is the Federal Reserve's annual economic policy symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday, which investors will watch for clues on monetary policy. According to the CME Group's FedWatch tool, traders are pricing in an 84.8% likelihood for an interest rate cut in September. In Canada, investors will monitor July inflation data due on Tuesday; a Reuters poll of economists expects the annual rate to slow to 1.7% last month. A fall in domestic inflation could prompt the Bank of Canada to slash interest rates. The central bank left rates unchanged at its last meeting and signaled further cuts if the economy weakens and inflation stays contained. The July housing starts data is due later in the day, and June retail sales figures on Friday. Blueacorn co-founder pleads guilty to PPP fraud scheme

Since the CARES Act was enacted in March 2020, 200 defendants in more than 130 criminal cases have been prosecuted and over $78 million in cash proceeds derived from fraudulently obtained PPP funds have been seized, in addition to several real estate properties and luxury items purchased with the proceeds. 0 This content has been selected, created and edited by the Finextra editorial team based upon its relevance and interest to our community. Nathan Reis, 47, of Rio Grande, Puerto Rico and co-founder of lending service provider Blueacorn, pleaded guilty last week in connection with a scheme to fraudulently obtain Covid-19 relief money guaranteed by the US Small Business Administration (SBA) through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Reis co-founded Blueacorn in April 2020 with claims to help small businesses and individuals obtain PPP loans. According to court documents, Reis conspired with others to submit fraudulent PPP loan applications by falsifying payroll figures to receive loan funds they were not eligible for. Through Blueacorn, Reis and others fabricated documents such as tax documents and bank statements and charged borrower's fees based on a percentage of the funds received. Reis pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, is scheduled to be sentenced on 21 November and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti of the Justice Department's Criminal Division says: "During a national emergency, this defendant exploited a taxpayer-funded program that individuals and small businesses desperately needed to survive. This conviction demonstrates the Department's ongoing commitment to bring to justice those who would steal from the public fisc to enrich themselves." Acting US Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Nancy E. Larson, adds: "This defendant had the opportunity to help small businesses overcome tremendous financial hardships during a time of national crisis but instead exploited the system to line his own pockets with taxpayer money. We will continue to pursue convictions against those fraudsters who preyed upon the generosity of the American people as we struggled through the pandemic." Assistant Director Jose A. Perez of the FBI Criminal Investigative Division, concludes: "The FBI takes our responsibility to investigate and pursue those who commit fraud for personal gain very seriously. Reis and others exploited a program meant to keep small businesses afloat during the pandemic. The FBI will continue to work tirelessly to prevent these programs from becoming targets and fight fraud wherever we find it."

Watch live: Trump and Zelensky meet at White House for crucial Ukraine talks

Watch live as Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky meet at the White House for crucial Ukraine talks on Monday, 18 August. It comes after the US president ruled out Ukrainian membership of Nato and sovereignty over Crimea, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014. Mr Trump has previously pressed the Ukrainian president to acknowledge Russia's claim to Crimea as part of a US-brokered peace agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, Mr Zelensky has asserted that Ukraine will never relinquish control of the peninsula. "President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight," Mr Trump said on his Truth Social platform. "No getting back Obama given NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!" In a statement, Mr Zelensky said he was grateful to Mr Trump for the invitation to the White House. "We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting. Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East — part of Donbas — and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack... Of course, Crimea should not have been given up then, just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022," Mr Zelensky added in a post on X. Monday's meeting follows talks between Mr Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, 15 August, which ended with no peace deal after nearly three hours of discussions. Despite launching an illegal invasion, the Russian president is understood to have demanded that Kyiv surrender the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk provinces as a condition for ending the war.
