WWE Saturday Night's Main Event XL Results As Gunther Wins, Retires Goldberg
WWE Saturday Night's Main Event was not just Gunther's first title defense of his second World Heavyweight Championship reign. It was billed as Goldberg's official retirement match.
Wrestling his first match since 2022 and last bout of a nearly 30-year career, Goldberg fittingly chose his adopted hometown of Atlanta as the site of his final bout. In the weeks ahead of WWE SNME, Goldberg addressed the toll that training to wrestle at 58 years old put on his body, but inside the State Farm Arena, he finally got his chance to go out on own terms.
At the 40th edition of WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, Goldberg challenged Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship, hoping for one more championship win before hanging up his boots for good.

After a _____ bout ________, Gunther finished off Goldberg with a _____ to retain the World Heavyweight Championship he just won back a few weeks ago. Gunther's win over Jey Uso ______ was reportedly part of WWE's long-term plan to build up to Gunther vs. Goldberg for the title in Atlanta in Gunther's swan song.
A counter-programming move done to oppose AEW All In, Gunther vs. Goldberg ______ was exactly what you would expect out of a match from Goldberg at this stage of his career. Never known as an elite in-ring technician, Goldberg pulled off some quick-hitting moves, like his spear and jackhammer ______, but it wasn't enough to put away one of WWE's most protected stars.
Gunther has suffered only a few losses in his main roster WWE career, and roughly a month after winning back his belt on Raw, he wasn't going to lose the title to a past-his-prime Goldberg.
No, at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, Gunther decimated Goldberg with _____ and pinned him for the 1-2-3, sending Goldberg into retirement. For good.
WWE Saturday Night's Main Event 2025: What's Next for Gunther and Goldberg?
In a recent interview, Goldberg's son Gage, a college football standout, admitted that he believes his father will want to wrestle even after WWE Saturday Night's Main Event.
But very few pro wrestling stars get to go out on their own terms, and Goldberg essentially got the perfect sendoff ___ Saturday in Atlanta. A staple of pro wrestling in the city, which has close ties to WCW where Goldberg first became a household name, Atlanta welcomed Goldberg with open arms ___ for what legitimately appeared to be the final time.
At nearly 60 years old, Goldberg got the retirement he wanted, putting over Gunther on his way out ____. That's the best way to do it, and there's no need for Goldberg to lace up the boots again. This Saturday Night's Main Event match was actually as much about Gunther as it was about Goldberg.
After losing to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40 and Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41, Gunther needed to rebound with a signature win ____, and that's exactly what he did on Saturday. ______Now, with Goldberg behind him for good, Gunther should have no shortage of challengers lining up to face him.
In recent weeks, WWE has teased some huge feuds for Gunther, including one with Seth Rollins that seems unlikely given Rollins' other rivalries and the fact that both stars are heels. Another likely opponent for Gunther is CM Punk, who seems to be the best and most logical foe for Gunther at the first-ever two-night SummerSlam.
Punk is the biggest babyface on Raw, and if he isn't involved with Rollins at SummerSlam, then Gunther's WWE Saturday Night's Main Event win should set up Gunther vs. Punk as one of SummerSlam's top matches.

Contract details for new Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey fully revealed
Jalen Ramsey's contract details have just been fully revealed — and here's what Steelers fans should know about Pittsburgh's newest cornerback. According to Spotrac, a well-respected source of information on sports finance, Ramsey's contract with the Steelers is a four-year, $84.7 million deal — including $19.5 million in guarantees, all of which he'll receive this upcoming season. Ramsey's 2025 cap hit is set at $4.904 million, and his 2026 salary includes only $3.5 million in injury-only guarantees — an absolute steal for Pittsburgh. It was previously speculated that the Dolphins had to trade Ramsey in a player-for-player deal due to his expensive contract — which might explain why the Steelers sent away one of the NFL's highest-paid safeties in Minkah Fitzpatrick. While both defensive backs involved in the trade are considered past their prime, Ramsey's versatility to play outside, in the slot, and at safety offers Pittsburgh an arguable upgrade over Fitzpatrick — whose lack of splash plays played a part in the Steelers' eagerness to deal him. Inside Eagles' C.J. Gardner-Johnson Trade Saga and His Complicated Exit from Philadelphia
Inside Eagles' C.J. Gardner-Johnson Trade Saga and His Complicated Exit from Philadelphia originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade saga continues to unfold months after the Philadelphia Eagles dealt the safety to the Houston Texans in March. What began as a straightforward financial move has evolved into a public back-and-forth, revealing deeper complexities behind the decision to part ways with a key contributor to the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX championship. Gardner-Johnson's initial reaction was measured and respectful.'This decision wasn't mine, but I walk away proud of what we built together,' he posted on social media following the trade announcement. 'To my teammates: Brothers, we bled, cursed, and laughed through it all. To the coaches and front office: Thank you for trusting a kid from Florida with a chip on his shoulder to lead this defense.' But his tone shifted in later interviews. Speaking with KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson, Gardner-Johnson said he felt 'highly disrespected' by the trade.'Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never! Led the league in interceptions. What more do you want?' he said. He also grabbed headlines with a video claiming the Eagles 'probably won't see a ring without me,' though he later retracted that statement. On The Pivot podcast, Gardner-Johnson offered his most revealing comments. When asked why the Eagles moved on, he bluntly replied, 'Scared of a competitor. Simple as that.'Pressed for clarification, he added: 'You can't program a dawg.' He pointed to practice altercations as a tipping point.'We had a little scrum at practice. Nothing, just offense vs. defense, but who's the culprit of it? Me, I guess, because we're competing,' he said. 'Well, you tell me the period is live. You're telling us not to compete during a live period, but it's a live period, and we're getting ready for a playoff game?' Gardner-Johnson also described feeling trapped in a no-win situation with the organization.'If I come in smiling, happy, and joy, 'Oh, he's too much.' If I come in there, just quiet, nice to meet you, how you doing? Yes, sir. No, sir? 'Oh, something's wrong with him.' And so that's two-faced war. I don't know how to play it,' he said. Importantly, Gardner-Johnson later walked back his harshest comments. On the podcast, he apologized for questioning the Eagles' championship hopes.'It's a disrespect to Jalen Carter, A.J. Brown — I can name all those guys on that team — Lane Johnson,' he said. 'Lane is my big vet and Lane would tell me, 'Hey, [C.J.], I got your back, but when you do too much, I don't got your back.' And that's one of those moments that's too much. Apologizing to the guys in Philly, I got nothing against them. And if they win six more rings without me, they deserve it, because that's the type of players they are.' The Eagles' stance on the trade has stayed consistent. General manager Howie Roseman cited financial factors, noting the team's priority was locking down other key players within salary cap constraints. Eagles insider Jason Dumas echoed that sentiment, reporting, 'This move was solely for financial reasons,' and adding that the Eagles 'wanted to get ahead of a big payday that is likely coming down the line.' Gardner-Johnson disputed that explanation.'It wasn't about the money,' he said. 'If it was about money, everybody would have been gone. How can I say this in the most respectful way? Saquon [Barkley] deserved it. Zack [Baun] deserved it, but the reasons behind it — the fans don't deserve that reason.' Complicating matters is Gardner-Johnson's nomadic NFL track record. He's now on his fourth team in four years — a rarity for a player of his caliber. Despite producing six interceptions, 12 pass breakups, and a forced fumble in 16 games last season, he's struggled to find long-term security. Pro Football Focus graded him at 76.0 in 2024, ranking 21st among 170 NFL safeties. Gardner-Johnson insists, however, that he's never had issues with teammates.'There's nowhere been a locker room where I had a single issue with a teammate,' he said. Now settling into his new role with the Texans, Gardner-Johnson admits he's still processing the trade but remains optimistic.'To be honest with you, I'm still shocked, but I'm happy,' he said. 'New, fresh start, meet new guys.' This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 17, 2025, where it first appeared.
