New pool on its way for Norfolk town after £11m scheme approved
Fakenham's sports and fitness centre in Trap Lane expansion will now progress after North Norfolk District Council's development committee unanimously approved the scheme.
As well as a 25m pool, other elements of the project include refurbished exercise studios, a 55-station fitness suite and new changing areas.

It is made possible thanks to government funding, confirmed last year by Labour, having been first proposed by the former Conservative administration.
The approval of the plans will mean people living in Fakenham will again be able to swim in the town after the previous pool closed in 2014.
At a meeting this week, Christopher Cushing, a Fakenham Conservative councillor, said: "News that Fakenham will get a new pool has been received enthusiastically by the majority of the town.
"It is the best form of exercise."

During the debate, councillor Angie Fitch-Tillett, also praised the project, highlighting that Norfolk had some of the highest rates of drownings last year in the country.
She said: "We have more water than anywhere else. It is absolutely vital that people learn to swim."
The eco-friendly elements of the project were also praised by councillor Adam Varley.
"It is fantastic to see what we are doing with our future estates," he said.
While there has been a huge amount of support for the pool, Fakenham's town brass band has previously complained about the project.

The pavilion, where the band used to rehearse, will be demolished to make way for the project, which upset some members.
Sports England also raised concerns that a cricket pitch will be lost through the development.
But ultimately, councillors voted unanimously for the plans to go ahead.
A 3G pitch will also be developed and will be able to offer an all-weather outdoor sports facility but this is subject to a separate application.

Report: Barcelona consider €70m offer from Premier League side
Manchester United's €70M Move for Fermín: High Stakes and Big Decisions at Barcelona United's Bold Interest Signals Serious Squad Rebuild Manchester United have stepped up their summer business with an audacious move for Barcelona midfielder Fermín López, submitting an offer exceeding €70 million. As reported by Sport, both Barça and the player's representatives are aware of United's interest, though 'no progress has been made' at this stage. The Premier League giants are desperate to reshape their squad under Ruben Amorim and see Fermín as a perfect fit due to his 'playing style, goalscoring ability, and great potential.' Photo IMAGO Interestingly, discussions between United and Barça over Rashford helped rekindle United's interest in Fermín. According to Sport, 'There was a good understanding between the entities, and relations are fluid,' hinting at the possibility of further dealings between the clubs before the window closes. Barcelona's Financial Reality vs Sporting Priorities Barcelona are facing a classic dilemma—retain one of La Masia's rising stars or cash in to ease financial pressures. Selling Fermín for €70 million would 'solve all the financial issues with the first team in one fell swoop,' Sport states. It would also allow them to implement La Liga's crucial 1:1 rule for player registration, enabling them to finalise contract renewals and complete further signings. Although head coach Hansi Flick 'wouldn't object' to Fermín's sale at a high price, the midfielder is highly rated within the club. He featured prominently during the decisive phase of last season and represents the ideal success story from Barça's academy. However, the midfield is 'significantly overbooked,' making his sale a practical, if painful, solution. United's Lucrative Offer Still Faces Player Resistance Fermín has already rejected previous approaches from Saudi Arabia, Chelsea, and Arsenal this summer, with Sport reporting that he 'wanted to stay at Barça no matter what.' United's approach includes 'practically doubling his salary' to entice him to move, but the player's preference remains uncertain. Ultimately, 'it will be the player himself and his entourage who will make the decision.' Potential Turning Point in Barcelona's Transfer Window If the deal materialises, it would be one of Barça's biggest-ever sales. While fans may lament losing a homegrown talent, the club's hierarchy see this as a 'historic opportunity.' Selling Fermín would provide immediate financial relief and enable Barça to act decisively in the market. For Manchester United, landing Fermín could be a statement signing—both for now and for the future. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Manchester United fan's perspective, this reported move for Fermín López is both exciting and slightly concerning. On the one hand, targeting a technically gifted, high-potential midfielder fits Ruben Amorim's vision. Fermín is dynamic, has an eye for goal, and is comfortable in tight spaces—exactly what United have often lacked in midfield transitions. However, €70 million is a steep price for a player with just one full top-flight season under his belt. While the fee could be justified by potential and market inflation, United fans will naturally compare it to past big-money deals that failed to deliver consistent returns. Financially, doubling Fermín's wages might be necessary, but that also raises questions about wage structure and dressing room balance. United supporters will back a move that energises the team and reflects a clear tactical plan. But it's fair to say this one has the feel of a high-risk, high-reward signing. If it comes off, Fermín could be the heartbeat of a new-look midfield—but only time will tell.

Carlisle United end 'hard' pre-season with victory in Chester
CARLISLE United first-team coach Gav Skelton has reflected on a 'hard' pre-season for the Blues. The Blues ended their 2025/26 pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory against Calum McIntyre's Chester at the Deva Stadium. Elliot Embleton's penalty and an own goal from Chester's Tom Leak sealed the result for the Blues who were supported by over 300 travelling Cumbrians. After the fixture, Carlisle United's first team coach Gav Skelton reflected on the 'positive result'. Speaking to the News & Star, he said: "It's a positive result although it is pre-season. "It breeds confidence and its not just 2-0, I thought we were convincing, I don't think we have been troubled too many times which shows a good resilience right through the team defensively, out from the keeper, the back four, and the whole team. "Ultimately you have got to score goals and we have done that by scoring two goals and have won 2-0 quit comfortably I think." Skelton also piled the praise on Carlisle United forward Regan Linney after his performance against the Seals. A performance which saw him test Chester goalkeeper Lewys Benjamin on several occasions as well as winning the Blues spot kick with some slick footwork and delivering the cross which was deflected by an opposition defender into his own goal. He said: "He is a threat, other teams were looking at him and we are lucky enough to have him. "He has done it in pre-season, now can he go and continue his form from last season at Altrincham into the real stuff for us. "He has been pleasing and promising and he will be going in confident and adapted to the group, so it has been a really promising pre-season, as it has been for a number of them. Carlisle United's attentions will now turn to their first National League when they travel to Woking on Saturday, August 9. However, ahead of stepping up preparation for this first fixture, Skelton reflected on the club's pre-season campaign. He said: "It has been a hard pre-season and I think you would hear that from the players as well. "You get a bit of a reward when you get good results in pre-season and hopefully it builds a bit of confidence and belief, not just amongst he players but throughout the whole club and supporters which we need to take into the season.
