Athletics-Bednarek, McLaughlin-Levrone win second Grand Slam titles as startup picks up pace
(Reuters) -Americans Kenny Bednarek and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone each smashed their way to a second straight Grand Slam Track title on Sunday, as the novel circuit wrapped up its Miami meet in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The Michael Johnson-fronted startup lured top talent with big prize money and after facing criticism over poor attendance at its inaugural Kingston meet, the fans turned up at Ansin Sports Complex for the second of four meets set for this year.
Bednarek, who won Saturday's 100 metres in a wind-aided 9.79 seconds, clinched the men's short sprints group on Sunday when he broke the tape in the 200 metres in 19.84, nearly three-tenths of a second ahead of Briton Zharnel Hughes.
"I'm going to be dominant this year," said the 26-year-old twice Olympic silver medalist, who is $200,000 richer with his wins in Miami and Kingston. "I'm right where I need to be."
Grand Slam offers a twist on the traditional track meet, as athletes face off in 12 groups - men's and women's short sprints, long sprints, short hurdles, long hurdles, short distance and long distance - and compete in two races per meet.
The point totals from those runs determine the champion of each group, with a maximum of 12 points up for grabs per race.
The 400-metre hurdles record-holder McLaughlin-Levrone won her signature event on Friday and jogged through the finish of the 400-metre flat in 49.69 on Sunday - nearly two seconds ahead of American heptathlete Anna Hall - to win the long hurdles group.
Grant Fisher, who picked up a pair of bronze medals in Paris, added to the home crowd's joy as he clinched the men's long distance group with 20 points total after a gutsy 13:40.32 win in the 5,000 metres.
Fisher made a break for it with four laps to go and ran a scorching 3:57 over the final mile after finishing runner-up in Friday's 3,000 metres.
"I wanted to turn this into a strength race, which is my specialty," said Fisher, who also won in Kingston. "Today I turned it into my race and got it done."
Dominican 400 metre Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino swept the women's long sprints group, winning the 200 metre in a national record 22.30 on Sunday after taking her signature event on Friday, while the 2022 world champion Alison dos Santos stayed unbeaten in the men's long hurdles group.
Ethiopia's twice indoor gold winner Freweyni Hailu took the women's short distance group with 18 points, Kenyan Agnes (18) Ngetich won the women's long distance and American Trey Cunningham (24) took the men's short hurdles.

"Every Ryder Cup, there is always a push by some people who have a good opportunity to claim a place," Donald, whose team beat the United States in Rome two years ago, said. "It is a little bit of a headache for me, but a good headache. The more options we have for those picks the better." Donald announces his six picks on September 1 and faces a tough dilemma with the likes of Spain's Jon Rahm, England's Matt Fitzpatrick, Sweden's Ludvig Aberg and Austria's Sepp Straka, all requiring the nod from the captain. English trio Aaron Rai, Marco Penge and Harry Hall are also on Donald's radar. Penge, who won the Danish Open last week, and Rai will both be in action at the Belfry while Hall will seek to impress from afar at the Tour Championship. While Donald says the team bond that was evident at the Marco Simone Club two years ago was vital, he is not discounting shaking it up with some rookies. "Having some continuity is good but also having fresh blood, having rookies, that could be good, too. It's not cut and dry," Donald said. "But certainly from a continuity standpoint, they understand how I work. I understand them quite well. "Those are all positives for sure." The Ryder Cup takes place at Bethpage Black Course, Farmingdale, starting on September 26 with the United States aiming to reclaim the trophy after a 16 1/2 - 11 1/2 loss in Italy. Boxing body introduces mandatory gender tests
BERLIN: World Boxing has announced mandatory gender tests for men and women wishing to compete in their events, reported German Press Agency (dpa). The confirmation by the new governing body comes some two weeks before its inaugural championships in Liverpool Sept 4-14. The new policy came into effect on Wednesday. "The policy is designed to ensure the safety of all participants and deliver a competitive level playing field for men and women," World Boxing said. All athletes wishing to participate in a World Boxing competition will need to undergo a once-in-a-lifetime PCR (polymerase chain reaction) of functional medical equivalent genetic screening test to determine their sex at birth and their eligibility to compete. Last month, World Athletics also introduced a sex test for athletes wishing to compete in the female category. The gender eligibility debate gained a lot of attention at last summer's Olympic Games in Paris where Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-ting won gold medals after being allowed to compete by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, a year before, they were disqualified from the world championships of the International Boxing Federation (IBA) after allegedly failing gender tests. The IOC, which has run the last two Olympic boxing tournaments because it has suspended IBA for various reasons, has said Khelif and Lin could compete because they were born and identify as women. World Boxing was recognisd as a partner by the IOC executive board in February and is set to take over the organisation of the boxing competitions at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. – Bernama-dpa

Disney's new ESPN app reaches for sports fans outside cable TV

The ESPN app is Disney's effort to capture some of the tens of millions of customers that the pioneering sports channel has lost since 2010 during the streaming TV revolution. ESPN executives said they have tailored the new offering, which is far broader than the limited ESPN+ app launched in 2018, to cater to the tastes of today's sports fans. "We know that fans don't just want to watch," ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro told reporters. "They want an experience. They want to interact." The app will offer more than 47,000 live events each year from the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, college football, tennis, golf and other sports. It will cost $30 per month. An introductory offer will include ad-supported versions of the Disney+ and Hulu streaming services for free. Fans can enter their favorite teams and sports for customization such as a personalized version of the "SportsCenter" news and recap show. Artificial intelligence will generate narration based on the voices of ESPN anchors. A new feature called "Verts," or scroll-ready, vertical video highlights, also can be tailored. Stats for a user's fantasy players will be displayed next to live games. And an ESPN Bet tab will show live, settled and upcoming bets for users who have linked their betting accounts. Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger has called the app "a sports fan's dream." Industry analysts see it as a chance for the company to pick up fans who do not subscribe to cable, and they do not expect it will pull masses from pay TV. ESPN was available in 100 million homes through pay TV in 2010. In July of this year, that number stood at about 61 million. "It's another step in Disney's pivot to (streaming) and the importance to streaming to the overall company," said MoffettNathanson analyst Robert Fishman. ESPN will promote the app extensively. Actor John Cena will star in commercials that stress "All of ESPN. All in One Place." Pay television will "remain a big part" of ESPN's business, Pitaro said. For the quarter that ended in June, ESPN accounted for $1 billion of Disney's $4.6 billion in operating income, or nearly 22%. Most of ESPN's revenue came from fees paid by cable and satellite distributors and from advertising. Subscribers to pay TV will have access to the new ESPN app. Pitaro said the company hoped to drive all of its customers to the app "because that's by far the best, the most holistic experience."
