THERE is no such thing as a stroll in the park for Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
After all, being the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry is no easy task, especially not when the United States is bent on imposing tariffs and other economic barriers.

Country needs a constructive opposition, says Liew

ISKANDAR PUTERI: For the sake of democracy, DAP strategic director Liew Chin Tong hopes the country could have a constructive opposition. He said the opposition has failed to be a constructive check and balance for the government. Liew, who is also Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister, said the opposition currently lacks clear direction. 'They need to decide whether they want to be a constructive opposition in Parliament or if they just want to play with issues and sentiments. 'So far, the current opposition has failed to live up to the expectation of a constructive opposition,' he said at a press conference here on Saturday (July 26). He said that for the sake of democracy, he hoped the country could have a constructive opposition. 'We hope that the opposition will be able to articulate policies, contribute to policy making and give good ideas,' he said. Liew said this when asked about the 'Turun Anwar' rally. When asked if his party remained supportive of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim amid the rally, he said they would. 'Of course, we are supportive of the Prime Minister, but I don't think I want to go into that," he said, adding that he would issue a statement on the matter later.

Pakistan urges global social media platforms to block accounts run by banned militant groups

FILE PHOTO: Taliban fighters patrol near the closed Torkham border with Pakistan in March, 2025. - AP ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday (July 25) urged global social media companies to take action to block hundreds of accounts allegedly run by outlawed militant groups that Islamabad claims spread propaganda and glorify insurgents in the South Asian country. According to Pakistan's Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry, groups such as the Pakistani Taliban and the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army - banned by the Pakistani authorities and also designated as terrorist groups by the United States - have been using X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram to promote violence in Pakistan. Chaudhry, who spoke to reporters at a news conference, urged the tech companies to remove or disable these accounts, as well as those run by supporters of the militant groups. Deputy Law Minister Aqeel Malik, who also spoke at the new conference, said Pakistani investigators have identified 481 accounts associated with the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, and the Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA. The accounts were being used to incite violence and spread hate speech, Malik said. There was no immediate response from any of the social media platforms to Pakistan's request. Pakistan itself has in recent years blocked access to X, primarily to curb criticism from supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan but also voices of other dissenters. The plea comes amid a surge in violence across Pakistan, much of it blamed on the two militant groups, as well as the Islamic State group. The Pakistani Taliban are allies but a separate militant group from the Afghan Taliban. However, the Taliban takeover of neighbouring Afghanistan in 2021 has emboldened the TTP. Militant groups also heavily rely on social media platforms to claim responsibility for attacks against security forces and civilians in Pakistan. - AP

Two Foreign Investment Projects Underway After Spate Of Trade Missions

Two foreign investment projects announced during the government's trade and investment missions abroad have now begun, refuting claims Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visits abroad are fruitless. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Gul Technologies, a company announced during the trade and investment mission to China last year, is currently building its factory in Kulim, Kedah, with an investment of RM350 million for Phase 1. He said the project is set to create 350 jobs for locals. 'What is interesting is that this company is collaborating with Kulim Advanced Technologies Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Kulim Hi-Tech Park Corporation Sdn Bhd, which is responsible for training young talents. 'Through this collaboration, the company will employ 100 local technicians who will be sent to China for training,' said Tengku Zafrul in a post on X today. Meanwhile, another company, EDA, which was announced during the trade and investment mission to Italy last year, has started an investment worth RM100 million in Jasin, Melaka. 'EDA also has 150 vendors among local companies. This means EDA is not only creating jobs at their facilities, but also supporting Malaysian workers in 150 local companies,' he said. These two projects are among the 2,198 manufacturing projects that have been approved throughout the Madani Government's administration from 2023 to the first quarter of this year. The minister said that of that total, 1,849 projects, or 84.2 per cent, have been implemented as of July. Related
