Gas reserves dwindling, future lies with solar energy: Tripura power min
He said four of the five gas-based power plants in the state have witnessed a dip in production.
Speaking at a programme in Durgachowmuhani in Dhalai district on Monday, he said, "The Palatana power plant, which is supposed to produce 726 MW of power daily, is now producing only 520 MW, while Manarchak power plant is producing 60 MW out of its installed capacity of 100 MW. At RC Nagar plant, NEEPCO is producing 80 MW out of its installed capacity of 135 MW, while Rokhia is producing 80 MW against its installed capacity of 63 MW."
Currently, the northeastern state requires an average of 370 MW of power daily, which will go up to 700 MW by 2030.
All the gas power plants also send power to neighbouring states.
"Power generation is reducing due to a shortage of gas supply to these plants. We have to understand that the gas reserves in the state is dwindling with every passing day," he said.
Urging people to embrace solar energy, the minister said the state government has already launched PM Surya Ghar scheme.
Nath said the PM Surya Ghar scheme will not only meet the energy demands of a consumer but also turn him or her into "energy seller".
"The Tripura Electricity Corporation will buy the excess power, which will be generated on rooftop solar plants. People must grab the opportunity," he said.
The minister said the state has taken the initiative to renovate the Gomati hydro-power project in order to generate 15 MW of power in future. The state's lone hydro-power project suffered serious damage in last year's floods.
Nath said a plan has been envisaged to set up a pump storage power generation unit in Dhalai district to meet the state's future energy demand.

The ruling BJP, incidentally, has had OBC chief ministers in the state since 2003, including Uma Bharti, Babulal Gaur, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and incumbent Mohan Yadav. Senior party leader Digvijaya Singh's MLA son and former state minister Jaivardhan Singh has been made Guna district president, a Congress leader said. Bhopal, Aug 16 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday released a list 71 district presidents in Madhya Pradesh, with a sizable 20-odd being those from the OBC category, followed by Dalits and tribals. The Congress' list has four women. These are Vijaylaxmi Tanwar, who has been made Agar Malwa district president, Pratibha Raghuvanshi in Khandwa city, Sunita Patel in Narsinghpur and Saraswati Singh Markam in Singrauli. A Congress leader said Omkar Singh Markam has been appointed Dindori district president, Priyavrat Singh has been given the post in Rajgarh and Harshvijay Gehlot has been made as Ratlam rural chief. They are all former state ministers. In Bhopal, Praveen Saxena and Anokhi Man Singh Patel were retained as city and rural presidents, respectively. Eleven former legislators have been made district presidents. From the minority community, Arif Iqbal Siddiqui replaced Maqsood Ahmed in Satna as city chief. In all the party has retained 18 district presidents, including Nanesh Choudhary (Barwani), Ravi Naik (Khargone), Prakash Ranka (Jhabua), Nareshwar Pratap Singh (Shajapur), Mukesh Bhati (Ujjain city), Mohit Raghuvanshi (Vidisha), and Rajeev Gujarati (Sehore). In Burhanpur, Congress leader Hemant Patil resigned from all party posts after being denied the rural district president's position. He was the district Congress spokesperson as well. 'I will remain a worker,' he told PTI. His is the first resignation following the announcement of the list. There are leaders from the SC/ST categories as well as two Muslims, two Jains, one Sikh in the list, another Congress leader added. 'The list has come in line with the vision of Rahul Gandhi who wants participation of all communities, especially OBCs, SCs and STs. Gandhi has been advocating caste-based census to end economic and social disparity,' he said. The list released by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal has come two months after Gandhi kicked off his party's 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan' (organisation rejuvenation campaign) in Madhya Pradesh. On June 3, Gandhi held back-to-back meetings here with party functionaries as part of preparations for the 2028 MP assembly polls. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP swept all 29 seats in MP, including Chhindwara, the home turf of senior leader and former chief minister Kamal Nath. The Congress has been out of power in MP since 2003, except for a brief 15-month period between December 2018 and March 2020 under Nath. The Nath government collapsed after several MLAs, most of them loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia, quit and joined the BJP. The BJP retained power with a huge majority in the 2023 assembly polls. Tripura aiming to use roofs of all govt buildings to generate solar power
The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has set a target to use the roofs of all government buildings in the state to generate solar power, an official said on Saturday. According to a recent survey, the northeastern state has around 2,000 government buildings. Around 70-MW power could be generated by installing rooftop solar panels, it showed. The move came in the backdrop of reduced output in four of the five gas-based power plants in Tripura, due to shortage of adequate gas supply, officials said. "The state government is focusing on solar power, as reserves of natural gas are dwindling with every passing year. A plan has been chalked out to use all the government buildings to generate as much solar power as possible," TREDA Joint Director Debabrata Sukladas told PTI. "We have set an initial target of producing 10.50-MW power from renewable sources (solar power) out of the total target of 70 MW. Tendering for the energy plan is in the final stages," he said. At present, the state produces around 26-MW power from solar energy, which was 3 MW seven years ago. "The transition plan also focuses on generating job opportunities for the youth. We will team up with the skill development department to impart training to solar power technicians and supervisors. The state needs trained manpower to install solar panels and for their maintenance," the official said. Tripura, which largely depends on gas-based power plants, has seen a decline in generation at the units owing to a supply crunch of natural gas. The OTPC-run Palatana power plant, with a capacity to produce 726-MW power daily is now generating only 520 MW, while the Manarchak power plant (NEEPCO) is producing 60-MW out of the installed capacity of 100-MW power. At RC Nagar plant, NEEPCO is producing 80-MW out of the installed capacity of 135-MW power, Sukladas said. The northeastern state requires around 370-MW power on a daily basis, which is projected to rise to 700 MW by 2030, due to growing urbanisation, officials said.
