Tom McKibbin and Nicolai Hojgaard take early lead at the Open

Irish Examiner17-07-2025
Irish golfer Tom McKibbin and Ryder Cup winner Nicolai Hojgaard led from the front on the first day of The Open on a testing morning for scoring at Royal Portrush.
The highlight for the 22-year-old McKibbin, who learned his craft at Rory McIlroy's Holywood Golf Club an hour down the road, was an eagle at the par-five seventh after teeing off in the first group at 6.35am.
He had slipped to two over after four but two birdies and the eagle took him to the turn in a two-under 34.
Dane Hojgaard, in the same group, birdied the two par fives at the second and seventh to also be two under with him and McKibbin two of only eight players under par of the 39 out on the course.

Two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington, who had been given the honour of getting the championship underway, birdied the first hole, but otherwise struggled on the greens and was two over at the turn.
McKibbin was one of a number of LIV golfers performing well.
Six-time major winner and 2013 Open champion Phil Mickelson was providing the early entertainment, holing a bunker shot for par at the short third having left his first attempt in the sand to sit one under after six holes.
Lee Westwood, back at the Open for the first time since 2022 after coming through qualifying, birdied his second hole to join the left-hander in an early tie for third.
Another of his LIV cohorts Dustin Johnson, the two-time major champion who has slipped to 969 in the world following his move to the Saudi breakaway, was level par through four holes.
Canadian Taylor Pendrith was the first to find out of bounds down the left on the intimidating first hole.
That was a fate which befell McIlroy six years ago when the tournament returned to the Dunluce Links but the Northern Irishman had to wait for his shot at redemption as he was not due to tee off until 3.10pm.
Out with Ryder Cup team-mate Tommy Fleetwood and American rival Justin Thomas, he was facing a greater chance of rain, some of it heavy, with winds gusting up to 20mph.

Sebastian Munoz cards stunning 59 including double bogey at LIV Golf Indianapolis

Sebastian Munoz recorded the third sub-60 round in LIV Golf history, stunningly overcoming a double bogey to shoot a 12-under-par 59 to open LIV Golf Indianapolis on Friday. The Colombian set The Club at Chatham Hills ablaze with 14 birdies, including on 13 of his final 14 holes. Munoz stood at one over par after his double bogey at five (his fourth hole), but he rattled off eight birdies in a row. After a par at the par-3 14th, he birdied his final five holes, knocking in a short putt at one for the historic round. He'll take just a three-shot lead over Dustin Johnson into the weekend. Bryson DeChambeau (2023 LIV Golf Greenbrier) and Chile's Joaquin Niemann (2024 LIV Golf Mayakoba) were the only others in the league's brief history to shoot sub-60. "Amazing round," Munoz said. "I started par-par-birdie, feeling normal. I just tried to go low, then a double hits me. I just kind of stayed positive, made a couple birdies and kind of made a run and we made eight straight. "I made a great putt on 17 and 18 to keep it going and a really good wedge shot here on one to finish it up." It was Munoz's lowest competitive round, as his caddie said he's shot 60 twice in his career. The final putt was no gimme. SEBAS SHOOTS 59 😱 @jsmunozgolf cards the third sub-60 round in LIV Golf history 🔥 #LIVGolfIndy @torquegc_ — LIV Golf (@livgolf_league) August 15, 2025 "The break was a little tricky so I just didn't want to mess it up. I had missed some short ones before, so I just really tried to focus, and at the moment just hit it as smooth as I could, and it went in, so it was great." Munoz, 32, has yet to win on the LIV Golf circuit but is seventh in the season standings and would love his first victory to come in the regular-season finale. Niemann, who has five wins this year, has a 12.27-point lead over Spaniard Jon Rahm in the race for the individual championship. Niemann is part of a tie for third at seven-under 64 with Patrick Reed, Belgium's Thomas Pieters and Australia's Cameron Smith. Rahm settled for a four-under 67. Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson is hoping to finish his season on a high note after doing no better than a tie for fifth all season. His 10-birdie, one-bogey round would have been the standout if not for Munoz. "I've still got a few more tournaments this year (outside LIV), so it's not like it's that much pressure on me," Johnson said. "But obviously I always want to win. That's the goal. That's why I'm out here. I still feel like I have the game to compete at the highest level. "Yeah, it would be nice to finish off the year with a win, but obviously there's two more rounds and a lot of good players and still 36 holes to go."

Rovers come from behind to dump Shels out of the cup

Shamrock Rovers dumped holders Shelbourne out of the FAI Cup at the quarter-final stage with a thrilling come-from-behind victory at a feisty Tolka Park. Two goals in a minute after the break did the damage for The Hoops who continued their Tolka Park hoodoo over the Reds - unbeaten in five now in Drumcondra - despite falling behind to an excellent team goal, finished off by Pearl Slattery in the first half. With maybe a potential hint of revenge stirring in visitors dressing room following last season's dramatic loss at the same stage, in which a jubilant Jemma Quinn planted the Shelbourne flag in the middle of the Tallaght pitch, the Hoops started brightly with flying wingers Anna Butler and Ella Kelly looking to get in behind the Shels back three on every occasion. But the home side, who now sit top of the tightly contested league table having leapfrogged Athlone Town at the summit racking up three wins on the spin, showed good patience and played their way into the hotly contested encounter. With little in the way of goalmouth action, it took until just after 20-minutes for the first shot in anger and was well worth the wait for the 705 in attendance. Started by last week's match winner against Waterford, Alex Kavanagh, the home side put together a passing move of the highest quality followed by a majestic turn and pass by Aoibheann Clancy in the middle. The Irish international then played a perfectly weighted slide rule pass to Slattery, who had stayed forward following an earlier set-piece, and the skipper finished with all the quality of seasoned number nine through the legs of Summer Lawless. The hosts then went close to doubling their lead shortly after when Noelle Murray sprayed a wonderful left footed pass on the diagonal finding Mackenzie Anthony who broke the offside trap and hit a rasping effort that was agonisingly close to finding the near top corner, catching Lawless off guard. Having nicked a win at Tolka earlier in the season, and having relative success in recent times Stephanie Zambra's side held no fear and kept plugging away but were dealt a huge blow just before the break when Maria Reynolds looked distraught picking up an injury. On the stroke of half time Anthony really should have gotten herself on the scoresheet when Scarlett Herron slipped on a through ball and spilled into the American's path. Anthony again missed the target by a matter of inches dragging her low shot just wide of the target. After a slight tactical change that saw Aine O'Gorman switch to right back following Reynolds injury, Zambra must have also read her side the riot act as her side punished Shels misses with two goals in a minute to completely flip the game on its head. Firstly, the towering Scarlett Herron powered in a back post header from a deep corner before Anna Butler nipped in to take advantage of a sloppy Keeva Kenna pass straight from the resulting tip off and slotted home to give her side the lead. With a sense of anxiety beginning to swirl around Tolka, it was Wearen's turn to look to the bench introducing the match winner from last seasons quarter final Megan Smyth-Lynch and the exciting young Maeve Wollmer. With 15 minutes left the latter spurned yet another chance for the home side as she found herself free at the back post but somehow screwed her shot back across goal from a couple of yards out. With time running out the visitors frustrated the home side with some intricate play in the final third and continued to carry a goal threat but it was now or never for Shels as they threw the kitchen sink at Rovers. In a dramatic ending, the talismanic Murray curled a stunning effort off the bar that, most inside the ground thought was destined for the top corner, and with a couple of minutes left Kavanagh played an inch perfect ball over the top onto Anthony's chest, who rounded Lawless with her first touch. Just as it looked as if the Shels striker was tapping home into an empty net, somehow the Rovers stopper got back around to claw the goal bound strike away with one of the saves of the season to ensure her side progressed to the semi-final. Shelbourne: Amanda McQuillan; Nia Hannon (Maeve Wollmer, 67'), Pearl Slattery, Keeva Keenan (Jemma Quinn, 83'); Jess Gargan, Alex Kavanagh, Rachel Graham (Megan Smyth-Lynch, 72'), Aoibheann Clancy, Leah Doyle; Noelle Murray, Mackenzie Anthony Subs not used: Courtney Maguire, Rebecca Devereux, Gabriella Del Pico, Lucy O'Rourke, Aoife Sheridan, Sarah McCaffrey Shamrock Rovers: Summer Lawless; Fiona Owens, Scarlett Herron, Maria Reynolds (Claire O'Reilly, 46'), Aoife Brophy; Anna Butler (Della Cowper-Gray, 88'), Melissa O'Kane, Jamie Thompson, Ella Kelly; Aine O'Gorman, Emily Corbet
