Profits drop at Warren Buffetts Berkshire Hathaway as it writes down its Kraft Heinz investment

Mint5 days ago
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Warren Buffett's company reported less than half as much profit in the second quarter as it took a $3.76 billion writedown on the value of its stake in Kraft Heinz, as that iconic food producer considers largely undoing the merger that Berkshire Hathaway helped bankroll.
Berkshire said it earned $12.37 billion, or $8,601 per Class A share, during the quarter. That's down from $30.248 billion, or $21,122 per Class A share, a year ago, because it recorded a much smaller paper investment gain this year.
Berkshire's earnings can swing wildly from quarter to quarter because it has to record the current value of its massive investment portfolio even though it doesn't sell most of the stocks. That's why Buffett has long recommended that investors pay more attention to Berkshire's operating earnings, which exclude those investment gains. Although last year Berkshire did surprise shareholders by selling off a huge chunk of its Apple stake which inflated the investment gains then.
By that measure, Berkshire's operating earnings were only down slightly at $11.16 billion, or $7,759.58 per Class A share. That compares with $11.598 billion, or $8,072.16 per Class A share, a year ago. Most of Berkshire's myriad assortment of companies — major insurers like Geico, BNSF railroad, a group of utilities and a collection of manufacturing and retail businesses — generally performed well despite the uncertainty about the economy and President Donald Trump's tariffs.
The four analysts surveyed by FactSet Research expected Berkshire to report earnings per Class A share of $7,508.10, so the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate's results were ahead of that.
Berkshire owns more than 27% of Kraft Heinz' stock and, for years, it had representatives on the company's board. Buffett has said previously that he believes the company's iconic brands will do well over time, but in hindsight, he overpaid for the investment and underestimated the challenges branded foods face from retailers and the growth of private label products.
This spring, Berkshire's representatives resigned from the Kraft Heinz board shortly before the company announced it is exploring strategic options that may include spinning off a large part of its portfolio of brands.
Over the years since Berkshire helped Kraft buy Heinz in 2015, the company has been hurt by changing consumer tastes and a shift toward healthier options than Kraft's core collection of processed foods.
Buffett's is still sitting on a massive pile of $344.1 billion in cash, although the company's reserves dipped slightly from the $347.7 billion cash it was holding at the end of the first quarter. Buffett told shareholders in May he just isn't finding any attractive deals for companies he understands.
Buffett surprised shareholders at the annual meeting when he announced that he plans to give up the CEO title at the end of the year and hand over operations to Vice Chairman Greg Abel, but Buffett will remain Chairman.

Synopsis Vietnam's exports surged by 16% in July, exceeding expectations, as companies rushed shipments to the US ahead of impending tariffs. While exports to the US rose significantly, imports from China also increased. The tariffs pose a threat to Vietnam's economic growth, prompting trade negotiators to seek alternative markets and boost domestic consumption. iStock The Southeast Asian nation, an export powerhouse that sells everything from coffee and clothing to engine parts, has been shipping more goods this year to buyers aiming to avoid US President Donald Trump's tariffs. Vietnam's exports jumped more than expected in July, with buyers racing to avoid a 20% tariff on the country's exports to the US set to take effect on Aug. rose 16% in July from a year earlier to $42.3 billion, the statistics office said in a statement, beating expectations of 14% growth. The country was initially threatened with a 46% import levy, though that has been lowered to 20%, just one percentage point more than for neighbors Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. 'Vietnam posted impressive export figures in July, mostly because companies were rushing to ship goods to the US ahead of the Trump tariffs,' said Tran Tuan Minh, chief executive officer of TVI, a Hanoi-based equity research and investment firm. 'We expect exports to slow significantly later this year, mainly due to the 20% tariffs and especially the 40% rate on transshipments, which still remains quite unclear at this point.' The government said in a statement Wednesday that trade negotiators are working to 'actively continue' talks with Washington. It also reiterated plans to diversify its markets, aiming for trade agreements with the Middle East and India, while increasing domestic consumption of Vietnamese goods. Exports to the US rose 26% in July from a year earlier to $14.2 billion, according to separate customs data released Wednesday. Imports from China increased 30.5% to about $16.7 billion in exports to the US account for roughly a fifth of Vietnam's gross domestic product, and the tariffs pose a threat to factories which have boomed as companies have diversified their supply chains from China. The data was generally positive, with consumer prices rising 3.19% on year, slower than the 3.40% economist estimate and the 3.57% pace of June. Industrial production rose 8.5% on year, and 0.5% compared with June. Commodity exports also gained, with coffee exports rising to 103,000 tons, a 34.6% rise on a year economy has been powering along in 2025, with gross domestic product rising 7.96% in the April-June period from a year earlier, according to data released last month. The government is aiming for 8% growth in 2025, though it's unclear whether the new US tariffs will derail that push.

'Billions of dollars now flowing into US': Trump's new tariffs come into effect in major trade war escalation

In a statement, Trump said that big amounts of money would flow in from countries that have 'taken advantage' of the US for years. read more US President Donald Trump's August 7 tariff deadline has ended, meaning that his sweeping levies have now come into effect. Just ahead of the midnight deadline (local time), the US president took to Truth Social to declare: 'IT'S MIDNIGHT!!! BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TARIFFS ARE NOW FLOWING INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!' In a bold move, Trump earlier announced a 50 per cent tariff on India, set to take effect on August 27, unless the country halts its purchases of Russian oil. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The tariff announcement coincides with Trump's escalating pressure on the technology sector. He warned of a 100 per cent tariff on foreign-made computer chips, urging tech giants to bolster domestic manufacturing. The White House's influence was evident when Apple, under mounting pressure, unveiled a massive $100 billion investment to expand its US-based production. The move is seen as a direct response to Trump's call for companies to bring manufacturing back to American soil. In his statement, Trump said that 'big amounts of money would flow in from countries that have 'taken advantage' of the US for years.' He framed the tariffs as a corrective measure to level the playing field for American businesses. 'The only thing that can stop America's greatness would be a radical left court that wants to see our country fail!' the Republican leader stated. Last week, Trump signed executive orders outlining tariff rates for nearly 70 countries, with duties ranging from 10 per cent to significantly higher rates for nations like Laos, Myanmar, and Syria. As the August 27 deadline approaches, all eyes are on India's response to the oil-related ultimatum, while the tech industry braces for the potential impact of Trump's proposed chip tariffs.
