Al Qaeda affiliate JNIM claims responsibility for Burkina attack
Al Qaeda affiliate JNIM has claimed responsibility for an attack targeting a military post in Burkina Faso's northern Loroum province in which the group said 60 soldiers were killed, the SITE Intelligence Group said on Tuesday.
The US-based non-governmental organiSation, which tracks online activity of Islamist militants, said JNIM had posted messages on Monday and Tuesday in which it took credit for four assaults in Burkina Faso and Mali.
The attacks highlight the difficulties the three Sahel nations of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, ruled by military leaders, are facing in containing the insurgents.
Burkina authorities have not commented on the latest attacks.
The most notable attack occurred in the Burkina town of Sole, where JNIM fighters raided the army military post and killed soldiers, SITE Intelligence said, without specifying on which day it took place.
Another Burkina attack killed 10 members of a pro-government militia known as VDP in eastern Gnagna province, SITE added.

More than 400 soldiers have reportedly been killed by insurgents since the start of May in bases and towns in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, an unstable region prone to coups. WIDENING INSECURITY JNIM has claimed responsibility for a host of recent attacks in the region. On May 24, it said it had attacked a base in Dioura, central Mali, killing 40 soldiers. Last Friday, it said it had seized a base in Sirakorola in southwestern Mali, although the army said it had repelled the attack. It did not provide a toll for that incident either. In neighbouring Burkina Faso, JNIM claimed attacks on military positions and the town of Djibo in mid-May in which it said it had killed 200 soldiers. And in Niger, more than 100 soldiers were killed in two attacks in the Tahoua region on May 24 and the Dosso region on May 26, security sources said. Neither Burkina Faso nor Niger has published an official death toll. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are all ruled by juntas that seized power between 2020 and 2023, citing the inability of civilian governments to stamp out jihadist insurgencies. All have cut ties with Western nations and turned to Russia for military support, but are still struggling to contain violence that has displaced millions.

Case against man who sent threats to Ramaphosa, Hill-Lewis postponed to verify addresses
CAPE TOWN - The case against a man accused of sending several threats to President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, and the CEO of a Cape Town-based company has been postponed to verify the accused's address. Philip Masango made his second court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Monday. The 28-year-old was arrested in Germiston two weeks ago after the businesswoman reported the threats to police. He faces three counts of assault and five of violating the Cybercrimes Act. Masango's case was postponed to 9 June for investigators to confirm several addresses he provided the court. The addresses include properties in Germiston, Gauteng, and Sea Point, Cape Town. Masango also provided an address for the Church of Scientology in Cape Town. The church has distanced itself from him. He also claims to have leased a property at the V&A Waterfront, but the prosecution told the court that there was no record of this. Masango will be represented by a court-appointed lawyer when he returns to the stand next week.

Gaza ministry says Israel killed more than 30 aid seekers, Israel denies
More than 30 Palestinians were killed and nearly 170 injured on Sunday near a food distribution site in south Gaza, the health ministry said, as witnesses reported Israeli soldiers fired on people trying to collect aid and Israel denied it. Israel's military said an initial inquiry found soldiers had not fired on civilians while they were near or within the distribution site. The Hamas-controlled Gaza health ministry said 31 people were killed with a single gunshot wound to the head or chest from Israeli fire as they were gathered in the Al-Alam district aid distribution area in Rafah. It said 169 were injured.
