Police investigating death of Maine paddleboarder as a homicide after discovery of body
The body of Sunshine Stewart, 48, of Tenants Harbor, Maine, was found Thursday on Crawford Pond in Union. The manner of death was determined to be a homicide, though the cause of death is not being released to the public yet, Maine State Police said in a statement.
Police have asked that anyone who may have seen Stewart paddleboarding on July 2 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond contact them. They described the investigation as 'active and ongoing.'
Stewart lived about a half hour from the pond, which is a popular summer destination about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from the scenic coastal areas of the state's midcoast region.
'As always, members of the public are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement,' police said in a statement. 'Additional information will be released when it becomes appropriate to do so based on the progress of the investigation.'
Loved ones of Stewart, who was known as 'Sunny' to friends, launched a GoFundMe page in her honor in the wake of her death. The page states that arrangements and memorial service dates were still being determined. The page had raised more than $17,000 by Wednesday.
'Today is a somber day for our family and friends. We've unexpectedly lost the light in our lives that was Sunny,' the page said.
Crawford Pond is located in the 2,400-resident town of Union, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) northeast of Portland, the largest city in the state. The area is popular with campers and daytrippers. The pond is approximately 600 acres (243 hectares) and has an island that is only accessible by boat.

Detroit police are searching for a suspect accused of firing shots early Friday morning at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. The shooting incident happened at around 4:49 a.m. Friday, when a gray sedan driving westbound on Jefferson Avenue fired shots at the building, striking six windows, according to First Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald. The vehicle continued on Jefferson to Shelby Street and then turned around and drove up Larned Street. The suspect then fired another round, striking a window on the building's north side before exiting on the Lodge Freeway. Investigators believe the suspect fired a pellet gun or BB gun because there was no audible sound or a 911 call of a reported shooting at the time of the incident. "I'm not sure if they were out joyriding, goofing around. It's not funny. Not entertained by it all," Fitzgerald said. "They're going to have to answer to it." The Coleman A. Young Municipal Center is home to governmental offices and a courthouse. Police say all the damage was contained to first-floor windows and that no one was inside the first floor of the building at the time of the shooting. Cleaning crews noticed the damage around 6 a.m. Friday. "What stands out is the pure stupidity of it. They know exactly where they are at," Fitzgerald said. "It's not funny. It's not a game to us. We're going to find you, and we're going to hold you accountable."

Police ID man shot dead in Yorkdale Mall parking lot
Toronto police have identified a man shot dead in the parking lot of Yorkdale Mall early Thursday in what investigators believe was "not a random shooting." Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean, 28, of Toronto, died outside the mall in the area of Highway 401 and Dufferin Street, police said in a news release on Friday. Police responded to a call about a person with a gun in the area at about 6:13 a.m. When officers arrived, they found Bentley-Jean shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the shooter or shooters fled the area before police arrived. Investigators believe this was "not a random shooting," Det. Sajeev Nair told reporters at a news conference on Thursday. "We understand that an incident like this, particularly in a public location like a mall, can be deeply unsettling," he said. "I want to ensure the public that we're dedicating all necessary resources to this case." Bentley-Jean is the city's 21st homicide of the year. Anyone with information is being asked to call police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
