Fair City star praises Al Porter for turning life around and 'ploughing forward'
He has worked with his fellow Dubliner for more than eight years, co-writing the Olympia panto with Stuart O'Connor.
Last week, Porter shared his unbelievable transformation over the past four years after ditching the booze and drugs.
Ryan, 32, said: "Al is absolutely brilliant. What he is doing with his career now, he is so talented.
"He is the most talented, funny, charismatic person I've ever met. He's better now than he has ever been."
In 2017, Porter's world came crashing down after he was accused of sexual assault and inappropriate behaviour by a number of men.
He disappeared from the spotlight for a number of years before resurfacing in 2022.
Last week, Porter, 32, posted on social media: "Wow! This pic came up as a memory.
"It reminds me how far you can come with love and support and time and a lot of effort in the right direction.
"Here, in 2019, I'm burying my head in the sand, trying to smile, but drinking myself into oblivion, trying to numb lifeand reality with drink, Xanax, weed, anything.
"I didn't want to accept my life or really be in it. I'd let so many people down and didn't know what to do.
"The next pic over is a couple of weeks ago finishing Hell & Back for Cystic Fibrosis.
"It's a real smile. Four years sober, even longer of counselling, and years of what my friend in restorative practice calls accountability in a supportive environment – not hiding from reality of your mistakes, but getting support to change, be better and to see a future for a different you, opportunities to make a positive life and contribution to society again."
He added: "I am very blessed to have had so much love and sometimes tough love in my life, that gave me a reason to do the work on myself; to change drastically and turn things around and I'm not finished yet. I am very grateful for the people that saw a future for flawed person who had made mistakes when I thought there was none.
"There is always a chance to better yourself and better days ahead if you change things – it's not easy but it's worth it." Speaking about Porter's journey, Ryan said: "I've seen him on stage in Vicar Street and his local show and even when he came back to the panto after eight years.
"The Al eight years ago to the Al now is like… he was so… the audience erupted.
"Everyone knows everyone is on their own journey, like us all.
"I was proud of him for how he turned it around and how he is still turning it around and ploughing forward."
Barnardos ambassador Ryan was speaking as he took part in a 12-hour Riverdanceathon at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin to help raise money for the children's charity.
Over 580 dancers from dance schools across Ireland took part in the Riverdanceathon. Members of the Riverdance cast also joined in to start the event just before 10am on Thursday and again at lunchtime to perform three numbers from the show on the Gaiety Plaza as well as bringing it all to an end that evening.
Through this partnership Riverdance hopes to raise funds and awareness for the work of Barnardos. Each year for its summer run at the Gaiety, Riverdance partners with a charity.
Barnardos is Ireland's largest children's charity which helps and supports the most vulnerable children and families in society to achieve their full potential with the support of the public.

RTE star Carl Mullan has said Will Leahy was one of the first people to call him to congratulate him on landing the Master of Ceremonies' job at this year's Rose of Tralee. 'So knowing that you have someone like that on your side and helping you along the way and giving you advice is absolutely amazing.' The Dubliner said he is 'excited' to get going with the festival, which is hosted by Daithi O Se and Kathryn Thomas. 'I'm just really excited for it now, especially now that I've arrived in you can get a sense of the buzz around the place. 'It's nearly when you're at home and you're just waiting, that's the worst part, whereas now I'm just really excited. I always have to keep reminding myself as well. I'm like, if you can dance on live television, having not known at all how to dance the week beforehand, you can do anything.' He said laughing. Ryan Tubridy responds to speculation he will run for the Irish Presidency
Ex-RTÉ star Ryan Tubridy has responded to messages from fans asking if he will be running for the Irish Presidency. The father-of-two has confirmed he will not be running for the Áras this year. The presenter, who currently hosts his own mid-morning show on Virgin Radio UK, broke his silence on the matter, confirming he wasn't planning on running for the gig. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the Dubliner said: 'In answer to many Insta questions, two things I'm NOT doing this weekend: 1) Going to Oasis. 2) Running for President. He added: 'Coffee and crossword for now.' Alongside the comments, Ryan shared a screenshot of a message from a follower which read: 'Come on… run for President!!!! You know middle-aged women vote in Ireland and you know you want to!' Ryan opened up about how tough the Presidential election is in Ireland, saying he is "baffled by the unhinged nature of presidential election coverage". "As someone who has interviewed the last three presidents (and their rivals in the various elections) I am repeatedly taken aback at the level of acrimony, cruelty and let's face it, prurience that goes with the task of running for the Áras," the former RTÉ star wrote in the Mail on Sunday. "The bizarre thing about it is that as soon as the president is elected, the mob stops as if switched off with a button. The President is generally respected and afforded a dignity that tends to go with the ceremonial nature of the august position. "I continue to be baffled by the unhinged nature of presidential election coverage. I understand that there must be scrutiny and that the campaign is one long job interview but is there a need for all that frothing at the mouth? "In the past few days, Mairead McGuinness withdrew her candidacy for health reasons (and I wish her a speedy recovery). For the other candidates (real or imagined) it was gloves off before they barely opened their mouths. The Irish Times went for Tony Holohan as soon as he suggested that his private polling had him at a healthy 15 per cent." The race to the Áras is set to take place in the coming weeks ahead of Michael D Higgins' retirement from the role. President Michael D Higgins will be replaced later this year Among the names hoping for a nomination include Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley, Catherine Connolly, Bertie Ahern, Gareth Sheridan and Mary Lou McDonald. Last week, Mairead McGuinness was forced to pull out of the Presidential Race on medical advice with Catherine Connolly now favourite to win the vote. A presidential election is expected towards the end of October, as it must take place in the 60 days before the term of current president Michael D Higgins ends on November 11. To be eligible to run, a candidate must be an Irish citizen who is 35 or older. They must be nominated either by at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or at least four local authorities.
