Pilot with 'ideological motive' steals small aircraft and disrupts major international airport operations

Fox News18-07-2025
A stolen plane triggered a major security incident at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on Tuesday afternoon, temporarily halting operations and forcing multiple flights to reroute.
Just before 1:30 p.m. local time on July 15, a "security incident" involving a small private plane led to a temporary halt in airport operations, according to a statement from YVR. The plane, flying within YVR's airspace, forced nine incoming flights to reroute to different airports.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., following a 39-minute air traffic suspension, the Cessna 172, operated by a single individual, safely landed. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) then apprehended the pilot.
In an air traffic control recording obtained by the Vancouver Sun via LiveATC.net, a controller alerted other pilots: "We do have an aircraft that has been hijacked and is in the vicinity of the airport ... just in case anything starts heading toward [you], you have the ability to move at your discretion."
"They are currently flying overhead," a voice from air traffic control can be heard saying. "At this time, I have no further updates. We have the aircraft in visual range—please stand by for further instructions."
Later, air traffic controllers instructed grounded aircraft to remain on standby during the ongoing situation:"We're not certain what will happen next. The aircraft continues to circle above, and its intentions remain unknown. For now, we are holding position."
RCMP later confirmed that the aircraft had been taken from Victoria International Airport and had flown around 40 miles into Vancouver's airspace.
A spokesperson for Vancouver Airport Authority said in a statement to Fox News Digital that the issue involving a plane from the Victoria Flying Club had been resolved without injury.
"Safety and security are our top priorities, and we continually review our processes and procedures in service of our operation, our passengers, and our airline customers," the statement read. "Following any significant situation or emergency operations activation and as part of our standard procedures, we debrief on what took place and make recommendations for changes or improvements where necessary."
One eyewitness, speaking to CBC, described seeing the low-flying aircraft and suspected something was wrong.
"A few minutes later, the plane made a second pass, circling in a wide clockwise turn," eyewitness Paul Heeny told CBC.
On July 16, RCMP revealed the identity of the pilot as 39-year-old Shaheer Cassim, who now faces a hijacking charge. Authorities allege he threatened a flight instructor at YYJ before taking control of the aircraft.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Tammy Lobb said in a press release that the suspect appeared to have an "ideological motive" aimed at disrupting air traffic. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Police noted that the investigation is still in its early stages and remains active.
British Columbia's Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Garry Begg, praised the swift actions of first responders.
"Grateful for the professionalism shown by police, air traffic control, and airport staff during today's incident," he posted on X. "Relieved there were no injuries and that normal operations have resumed."
The airport says flights have resumed at YVR, though minor delays may persist. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police but did not immediately receive a response.

Sean ‘Diddy' Combs Asks Judge To Void Conviction Or Give Him New Trial

Sean 'Diddy' Combs urged a judge to drop his conviction on prostitution charges or else he would push for a new trial, alleging his conviction was 'unconstitutional' and that the sex acts at the center of his two-month trial did not amount to interstate prostitution for commercial gain. Sean "Diddy" Combs was convicted on prostitution charges last month. (Photo byfor Sean "Diddy" Combs) Getty Images for Sean "Diddy" Combs Combs' lawyers, in a legal filing late Wednesday, said they believe he is the 'only person ever convicted' under the Mann Act, an anti-sex trafficking law that was used to charge Combs on prostitution offenses, who had 'no commercial motive' and engaged in sex acts with consenting adults. His lawyers disputed the Mann Act charges, stating Combs did not profit from the alleged prostitution and that his payments to escorts were transactions with lawful businesses, demanding the court grant 'an acquittal, or at an absolute minimum, a new trial on the Mann Act counts alone.' Combs' lawyers said the 'freak-off' sex performances he sometimes videotaped, which were a key part of testimony from his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, were 'creative, intricate, and highly choreographed' forms of 'amateur porn,' which the lawyers said is 'protected under the First Amendment.' The filing reintroduced an argument the defense had made throughout the trial, that 'Combs, at most, paid to engage in voyeurism as part of a 'swingers' lifestyle,' which his lawyers said is not the same as prostitution and is not illegal. The filing was made one day after Combs' lawyers asked the judge to release him from jail on a $50 million bond, where he remains as he awaits his October sentencing. It's unclear whether President Donald Trump plans to pardon Sean 'Diddy' Combs, with whom he was acquainted decades ago, though Deadline reported on Tuesday the president is 'seriously considering' a pardon, citing an unnamed administration source. Trump previously told a reporter who asked in May whether he would pardon Combs that he would 'look at the facts,' adding he had not spoken to the music mogul since he entered politics. Rolling Stone reported in May that members of Combs' team had reached out to Trump allies to discuss a possible pardon, though sources told Rolling Stone that Trump officials had hesitated because of the severity of Combs' charges. Trump has a history of pardoning celebrities, including rappers Lil Wayne and NBA YoungBoy, both of whom faced weapons charges. What Was Combs Convicted Of? At the conclusion of his two-month trial earlier on July 1, Combs was found guilty on two of his five federal charges: both counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, one of which was related to Ventura while the other concerned his ex-girlfriend who testified under the pseudonym 'Jane.' Prosecutors argued he had transported his former girlfriends and male sex workers across state lines to engage in drug-fueled, marathon 'freak-off' or 'hotel night' sex performances. He was acquitted on the most serious charges, two counts of sex trafficking and one count of racketeering conspiracy. He pleaded not guilty to all five charges. Combs still faces prison time, but his acquittals spared him from what could have been life in prison. Each count of transportation to engage in prostitution carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, though prosecutors previously indicated in a filing they would seek between four and five years in prison based on federal sentencing guidelines. The defense is pushing for a shorter sentence of about two years. Combs will be sentenced on Oct. 3, according to court filings. A judge previously denied Combs' request for bail, suggesting evidence that was presented during the trial—particularly the surveillance footage from 2016 that depicted Combs attacking Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel—indicates he could be a danger to society. A Trump Ally Pressed for a Mexican Citizen's Release from ICE Custody

After nearly two months in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, Paola Clouatre, 25, secured her release from a Louisiana detention center this week following an intervention from an unlikely source: a Republican lawmaker who has allied himself with President Trump. Officials who work in the office of Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, requested that the Department of Homeland Security release Ms. Clouatre from detention after an immigration judge halted her deportation order, according to emails reviewed by The New York Times. Ms. Clouatre, a Mexican citizen, had been detained by ICE agents on May 27 while she was at a routine appointment in New Orleans related to her application for a green card and permanent resident status. Ms. Clouatre first entered the United States as a teenager to seek asylum with her mother and brother. The family was processed at the border in Tijuana, according to Ms. Clouatre and her lawyer, and was granted parole, which allows migrants to remain temporarily in the country. In 2018, Ms. Clouatre's mother failed to show up for a court hearing in California, leading a judge to issue a deportation order against Ms. Clouatre. By then, Ms. Clouatre was homeless and estranged from her mother, she said. She did not discover the deportation order until earlier this year, when she was already in the process of applying for a green card. Ms. Clouatre is married to Adrian Clouatre, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with whom she has two young children. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
