Alligator Alcatraz: US judge halts construction at Florida's detention centre; suit argues project threatens environmentally sensitive wetlands

Time of India08-08-2025
A US federal judge halted construction for two weeks on Thursday at a Florida Everglades immigrant detention facility known as "Alligator Alcatraz" while evaluating potential environmental law violations.
The facility, established two months ago at an underutilised single-runway training airport, accommodates up to 3,000 detainees in temporary tent structures. Judge Kathleen Williams' order prohibits additional filling, paving or infrastructure development, whilst maintaining existing law enforcement and immigration activities, AP news agency reported.
Environmental organisations and the Miccosukee Tribe seek a preliminary injunction to cease operations and further development.
Their legal challenge emphasises the threat to protected wetlands and wildlife, potentially undermining substantial environmental restoration investments.
'We're pleased that the judge saw the urgent need to put a pause on additional construction, and we look forward to advancing our ultimate goal of protecting the unique and imperiled Everglades ecosystem from further damage caused by this mass detention facility,' said Eve Samples, executive director at Friends of the Everglades.

However, Governor Ron DeSantis' spokesperson Alex Lanfranconi affirmed the facility's continued operation for immigration enforcement.
The temporary order precedes pending case arguments. Environmental advocates presented witnesses over two days, with government attorneys scheduled for the following week. Judge Williams implemented the restraining order after the state declined to voluntarily halt construction.
The legal dispute centres on federal versus state control. Plaintiffs argue the facility violates the National Environmental Policy Act, requiring federal assessment of major construction environmental impacts. The state maintains construction and operations fall under Florida's jurisdiction.
A separate lawsuit addresses detainee rights violations, including restricted lawyer access and cancelled bond hearings.
Florida officials assert that since July 15, all attorney meeting requests have been granted, as per AP.
The state maintains autonomous control over construction and operations, though federal agencies grant detainee authority through an intergovernmental agreement. Environmental groups argue federal oversight applies regardless of state construction involvement.
While these legal proceedings continue, DeSantis' administration appears to be developing a second detention facility at a Florida National Guard training centre in the state's northern region.

State poised to become a hub for critical minerals: CM

Bhopal: CM Mohan Yadav on Tuesday said the state is poised to become a hub for critical minerals. "The energy capital Singrauli district has a rich deposit of rare earth elements (REEs) adding immensely to the voluminous deposit of minerals in Madhya Pradesh. With a vast mineral reserve, Madhya Pradesh will help India to do away with the dependence on countries like China," he said. An official press release issued here on Tuesday evening said Union minister for coal and mines G Kishan Reddy had informed Parliament that this was the first time such a massive deposit of rare earth elements has been found in India. "This achievement will prove a milestone in making India self-reliant in green energy, electronics, and defense technologies." Rare earth elements are considered the foundation of modern technology. Until now, India has been dependent on China and other countries for these minerals. The discovery in Singrauli will free India from this import dependency and place it at the forefront of global competition. In the coming years, this discovery will not only advance the "Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India)" initiative but also accelerate industrial development. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 16 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo A study by Coal India Limited found promising concentrations of REEs (such as scandium, yttrium, etc) in the coal mines and rocks of Singrauli. The average concentration is estimated at 250 ppm in coal and around 400 ppm in non-coal strata. The official announcement of this discovery was made in July. Experts believe that in the future, coal ash and overburden could also serve as secondary sources of critical minerals. Following the discovery of REEs, the state govt is now working on developing the necessary infrastructure for their processing, research and exploration. A delegation from the mineral resources department recently visited the Bhopal unit of Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) to discuss potential collaboration. The department is also exploring the possibility of establishing a Center of Excellence for RREs to provide a world-class platform for research training, and industry. With the newfound treasure in Singrauli district, the country will become self-reliant in green energy, electric vehicles and high-tech industries. HC names ADG Sanjiv Shami to head SIT probe against Masood

Bhopal/Jabalpur: Koh-e-fiza police may register an FIR against Congress MLA Arif Masood on Wednesday. The MP high court has directed police commissioner, Bhopal, to register the FIR against the Congress MLA over alleged fraud linked to a college run by him. The court directed filing of the FIR within 3 days after uploading of its order on a petition filed by Masood challenging the decision of Barkatullah University, Bhopal, to derecognise the college run by Aman Society of which he is the secretary. The order was uploaded on the high court's website on Monday. Police were expected to register an FIR on Tuesday evening but it was deferred as documents required for the purpose couldn't be collected by them. Meanwhile, a division bench of justices Atul Sreedharan and Pradeep Mittal have recommended the name of ADG (telecommunication) Sanjiv Shami to head the special investigation team (SIT), which shall be constituted by the DGP to oversee the police investigation into the case involving Masood after registering an FIR against him. The court, in its order, said investigation should not be carried out against Masood only but also officials, who were complicit in allowing Masood's college to run despite knowing about the fraudulent solvency documents presented by him, not once but twice to get affiliation for the college. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "This court directs police commissioner, Bhopal to register an FIR against Arif Masood and such other persons, who may appear to have been complicit from the side of the state in facilitating Arif Masood in this alleged offence, within three days from the date of this order being uploaded on the website of the court. Prima facie, this court is of the opinion that Arif Masood may be politically well connected, otherwise it was impossible for him to have continued for more than 20 years without any issues. Therefore, this court deems it essential to constitute an SIT, which would oversee the investigation by the police in the FIR registered pursuant to the directions of this court. In this regard, this court requests the director general of police, Kailash Makwana, to consider constituting an SIT headed by Sanjiv Shami presently ADG (telecommunications) PHQ, Bhopal and two such other Officers to be selected by Sanjiv Shami as per his confidence and trust, which would oversee the investigation of this case and bring the guilty to book if any. The court hopes that the SIT would be able to oversee the investigation and take it to its fruition by filing the necessary report under Section 173 of CrPC, within a period of 03 months from the date of this order," said the order. The court further said the investigation must proceed uninfluenced by the observations made in this order which even otherwise are prima facie observations made on the basis of the records of the case and the arguments put forth by the parties. Bhatti slams BRS govt for reckless approvals, stalled projects

Hyderabad: Deputy chief minister and finance minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Tuesday alleged that the previous BRS govt had approved development works in certain departments without regard for income or budget allocations, at an alarming ratio of 1:25. He said several projects were taken up but left incomplete, leading to severe fund shortages and leaving new ministers unable to propose fresh works in their departments. At a review meeting with members of the cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure and capital works, held at the secretariat, Bhatti pointed out that approvals in governance had traditionally followed a 1:3 ratio based on revenue and budget. However, the BRS govt, he said, had completely disregarded this principle, resulting in a situation where "no project is in a position to be completed and no new work can be funded." While pushing forward with development, he stressed that all constituencies in the state must receive fair representation. Bhatti further instructed that projects supported by central govt-sponsored schemes and NABARD assistance should be given preference to ensure timely completion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He warned against repeating past imbalances where some departments received 100% priority while others were ignored. The minister also emphasised that fund allocation must go hand in hand with revenue generation. All officers were asked to prepare plans accordingly and to coordinate with their respective ministers before sub-committee meetings, ensuring priority lists of works are in place.
