Fifth such accident in past six weeks: Kharge demands probe into U'khand chopper crash
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday condoled the loss of lives in Uttarakhand chopper crash and demanded a 'thorough investigation' into the mishap as well as proper safety arrangements for all trips, to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Raising an alarm over the gravity of situation, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha said that the chopper crash in Uttarakhand is fifth such helicopter accident in the last six weeks and demanded that accountability for these accidents must be fixed and those responsible must be brought to justice.
Taking to his social media handle, the Congress MP wrote: 'The news of helicopter crash in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand is very painful. Seven passengers have died. Our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. May God give strength to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.'
'There is an appeal to the state and central government that these accidents should be investigated and proper safety arrangements should be ensured,' he further said.
Meanwhile, helicopter services for Kedarnath have been suspended for the next two days.
'Helicopter services will not run today or tomorrow. These services will remain closed until the safety of the passengers is ensured,' Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami told the mediapersons on Sunday.
Early this morning, seven people, including the pilot were killed after the chopper crashed near the forested area of Gaurikund in Rudraprayag district. The Aryan Aviation Helicopter was flying to Guptkashi from the Kedarnath Dham when it crashed at around 5.30 a.m. on Sunday.
In another crucial decision, the operations of Aryan Aviation for the Char Dham Yatra have been suspended with immediate effect. An official said that two helicopters belonging to M/s TransBharat Aviation -- bearing registration numbers VT-TBC and VT-TBF -- were found to have been airborne under similar unsuitable weather conditions following which the licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months.

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 16 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on the tragic helicopter crash in Rudraprayag that claimed the lives of all seven people on board. A high-level meeting was convened immediately after the crash, he said. In a post on X, CM Dhami stated, 'Honourable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji, during his foreign visit, held a telephonic conversation from Cyprus and obtained detailed information regarding the Rudraprayag helicopter accident. During the conversation, the Prime Minister expressed deep condolences for those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.' 'He (PM Modi) was also informed about the important decisions taken in the high-level meeting convened immediately after the accident. In relation to this unfortunate incident, a detailed briefing was also given via telephone to Honourable Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji and Honourable Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri @RamMNKJi. The central leadership has assured all possible assistance,' CM Dhami wrote Five adults, one infant and one crew member were on board the Aryan Aviation's Bell 407 helicopter operating in the 'Shri Kedarnath Ji - Aryan Helipad, Guptkashi' sector that crashed on Sunday, the Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement. The helicopter took off from Guptkashi at 05:10 am and landed at Shri Kedarnath Ji Helipad at 05:18 am before departing again at 05:19 am for Guptkashi and is reported to have crashed near Gaurikund between 05:30 am and 05:45 am, the statement said. The ministry said that preliminary indications suggest that the probable cause of the crash may be Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT), with the helicopter reportedly airborne despite poor visibility and extensive clouding at the valley entry area. The exact cause will be determined through a detailed investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Rescue operations by NDRF and SDRF teams are currently underway at the crash site. Following the incident, a high-level meeting was convened by Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami at 11 am attended by senior officials of the Government of Uttarakhand, Secretary (Civil Aviation), DGCA, and associated teams. In the meeting immediate actions have been taken, which include suspending all operations of Aryan Aviation for the Char Dham Yatra with immediate effect. Two helicopters belonging to TransBharat Aviation --VT-TBC (PIC: Capt. Yogesh Grewal, CPL(H)-1453) and VT-TBF (PIC: Capt. Jitender Harjai, CPL(H)-1046)--were found to have been airborne under similar unsuitable weather conditions. Accordingly, the licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months. All charter and shuttle helicopter operations in the region have also been suspended on June 15-16, as a safety precaution. The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority has been directed to hold a comprehensive review with all operators and pilots before any resumption of services, to ensure full alignment with safety protocols. UCADA will also establish a dedicated Command-and-Control Room to monitor real-time operations and ensure immediate escalation of any risk indicators. Directorate General of Civil Aviation has been directed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, to immediately post officers from Airworthiness, Safety, and Operations to actively oversee all helicopter activity in the Kedarnath valley and rigorously review the functioning of the UCADA Command-and-Control Room. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has reiterated that aviation safety is non-negotiable and that no operator should undertake flights in violation of weather-related and other protocols. The Ministry has issued strict instructions to DGCA to enforce all extant provisions with full authority and to ensure that discipline in flying operations is maintained at all costs, given the sanctity of human life. "Indian students in Iran are calling for help": Congress leader Pawan Khera
New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday flagged the issue of over 1,500 Indian students being stranded in Iran's Tehran while slamming the Indian government for being 'largely unresponsive' amid the ongoing conflict between the Middle Eastern country and Israel. 'Indian students in Iran are calling for help. But the government remains largely unresponsive, even as missiles rain from the sky. With flights suspended, airspace over Tehran closed, and internet access disrupted, more than 1500 Indian students are left in a state of precarity and uncertainty - with no information about evacuation or safe zones,' Khera posted on X. Although the Indian embassy in Iran has issued an advisory for students, the Congress leader added that it remains 'unresponsive' for students who remain distressed. 'The Indian Embassy has issued a generic advisory urging the students to 'remain vigilant, avoid all unnecessary movements, follow the Embassy's Social Media accounts and observe safety protocols as advised by local authorities'. Meanwhile, students remain trapped in distress as the Indian Embassy in Iran remains unresponsive: We are traumatised after last night's attack. There has been no response from the Indian Embassy. Our families are panicking,' Khera highlighted. He accused the Narendra Modi government of 'turning evacuations into propaganda opportunities' while stating that the government steps in late and does too little. 'This is not the first time Indian citizens have been left pleading for help during foreign crises. Whether it was Sudan, Ukraine, or now Iran, Modi's government has turned evacuations into propaganda opportunities - stepping in late, speaking too much, and doing too little, too slowly,' Khera said. He urged that the Ministry of External Affairs establish a coordinated evacuation mechanism before the window for safe exit of students narrows. 'The MEA must move beyond passive advisories and immediately establish a coordinated evacuation mechanism - complete with emergency response teams, real-time communication channels and logistic support - before the window for safe exit narrows any further,' he added. "Public safety shouldn't be afterthought": Congress leader Pawan Khera on Pune bridge collapse
New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): Senior Congress leader Pawar Khera expressed his condolences to the families of the people who were killed in the Pune bridge collapse incident on Sunday, saying that 'public safety should not be an afterthought.' Expressing sorrow over the people's deaths, the Congress leader said that the lives lost in this disaster were a reminder of the cost of negligence. 'The collapse of the footbridge over the Indrayani River in Pune's Maval tehsil is a heartbreaking tragedy. Our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones, and our thoughts are with those injured or still missing. Each life lost in this avoidable disaster is a painful reminder of the cost of neglect. Public safety should not be an afterthought,' Khera posted on X. He went on to appreciate the efforts of the search and rescue teams invested in saving lives and rescuing those who have been trapped. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Jadhav-Patil informed that the rescue teams were working to save people, while the injured were rushed to the civil hospital for treatment. He said the bridge collapsed since many tourists flocked to the same area despite restrictions imposed. 'Till now, injured people have been admitted to the (Civil) hospital... The rescue operation is going on in full swing. NDRF and SDRF have come here for the same, along with volunteering organisations and locals... This bridge was restricted for people and two-wheelers, but since people were excited about monsoon tourism, many tourists flocked to the bridge, and it collapsed,' Patil told ANI. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who were killed in the Pune bridge collapse. The state government will also bear the cost of the medical treatment of the injured. 'CM Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the state government will provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the bridge collapse incident on the Indrayani river near Talegaon in Pune district. Additionally, the state government will also bear the cost for the medical treatment of the injured,' CMO Maharashtra posted on X. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Devendra Fadnavis to inquire about the ongoing rescue operations after a bridge on the Indrayani river collapsed in Kundamala, which remains a popular tourist attraction in Talegaon Dabhade. The Prime Minister, currently in Cyprus, was briefed about the ongoing efforts to assist those affected. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offered his 'heartfelt condolences' to the families of the deceased and hoped for the safety of those who still remain missing. 'The news of drowning of many people due to the collapse of the bridge on Indrayani river in Pune is extremely sad. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and hope for the safety of those who are still missing. There is an appeal to the administration that relief and rescue operations should be carried out with full promptness,' Gandhi posed on X. The NDRF is conducting search operations for those swept away, and all agencies are on high alert to expedite relief efforts. The injured are receiving medical care at nearby hospitals. (ANI)
