New Rangers owners promise £20m investment after completing takeover
The Glasgow club announced that a consortium of investors, led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, has purchased a majority stake in the club.
The new leadership now owns 51 per cent of Rangers following a number of share purchases and has committed to invest £20million into the club, the vast majority to be spent on players.
This funding will come in the form of a new share issue, subject to shareholder approval at a general meeting on June 23. The club is also set to move from being a public limited company to private.
Healthcare executive Cavenagh will become chairman, while Paraag Marathe, who is chairman of Leeds and president of 49ers Enterprises, becomes vice-chairman.
Rangers say the Scottish Football Association approved the deal late on Thursday night after the club sought consent over dual ownership issues. Sports investment firm 49ers Enterprises owns a majority stake in Leeds.
A similar investment into Hibernian involving the Black Knights, the consortium that owns Bournemouth, was subject to SFA requirements that the stake in the Easter Road club did not exceed 30 per cent.
The deal will allow Rangers to step up their recruitment of a new manager with outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti the front-runner, but no movement is expected until next week.
Cavenagh said: 'We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the Rangers board, shareholders, staff, and supporters.
'This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches.
'We know that the true way to honour the club's heritage will be to drive performance.
'Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs – at the top.'
Marathe added: 'At 49ers Enterprises, we have built a track record of sporting and business success, but our driving motivation is our deep connection to the clubs and communities we serve.
'We are excited to join Andrew and our other consortium of investors in a new era for this iconic club, and we are determined to build something that supporters can be proud of for years to come.'
Three other United States-based directors, Mark Taber, Andrew Clayton, and Gene Schneur, will join Cavenagh and Marathe as new members of the board.
Chief executive Patrick Stewart, outgoing chairman Fraser Thornton, John Halsted and George Taylor will remain on the board while Graeme Park, Julian Wolhardt, and Alastair Johnston are stepping down.
Stewart said: 'From my earliest conversations with Paraag and Andrew, I have been excited and confident in the shared vision and what it could mean for the future of Rangers.
'Our focus now is on the hard work ahead, preparing thoroughly for the new season, appointing the right men's head coach, and ensuring we have the structures in place to support success on the pitch.'
Thornton added: 'The incoming shareholders bring not only funding but also deep expertise in strategic planning, infrastructure development, and sporting excellence.'

Three rare items from the late Davie Cooper's football career are to be sold at McTear's Auctioneers on Thursday, June 19. Headlining the collection is the Rangers Hall of Fame trophy, which was awarded posthumously in 2000 when Cooper was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame. The bronze bust on a slate base is inscribed with "Rangers Football Club, Hall of Fame, Davie Cooper 1977 – 1989". This unique item is expected to sell for between £2,000 and £4,000. The Greatest Team jersey, which was presented to Cooper's family in 1999 after a worldwide fan poll selected him for Rangers' all-time best eleven, is anticipated to reach between £800 and £1,200. Rangers 'close in' on first transfer of 49ers era as star who broke Ibrox hearts in Seville is on the table
A former Frankfurt defender is reported to be on his way to Ibrox as one of the 49ers' first signings Rangers are reported to be closing in on their first incoming transfer of the 49ers era in defender Almamy Toure – who played against them for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final. They promise fresh ideas and investment on and off the pitch as they look to restore Rangers, who have won just one top-flight title in the last 14 years, as a genuine force in Scotland. The first step in that direction will be appointing a new manager with Davide Ancelotti, Francesco Farioli and Russell Martin among the current contenders. But work is already ongoing in tandem to ensure the next boss will have a serviceable squad to work with. They've parted company with a number of out-of-contract stars like Leon Balogun, Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence and it's being reported in Africa that one player being considered to plug a gap in a depleted squad is 29-year-old Toure. Africa Foot say the versatile defender, equally effective at right-back and centre-back, is a target with work already underway to bring him to Scotland. Toure spent last season in the German second tier with Kaiserslautern where he struggled with injury and is looking for a move to get back playing regularly and relaunch a career that at one time looked highly-promising. He came through the ranks at Monaco and was part of the golden generation of talent that included Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva and Fabinho. Toure came off the bench in their famous Champions League comeback victory over Manchester City in 2017 and played 80 times for the club before his exit in 2019. He then signed for Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the Europa League in 2022 – downing Rangers on penalties in the final. The defender's exit from Kaiserslautern has already been confirmed and his reported weekly wage of around £8,000 puts him on the table as a cost-effective defensive option whose name value and experience may well appeal to the new Ibrox owners.
