Matthew Slater breaks silence after losing coaching job with Patriots
Former New England Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater, who served as an assistant coach last season, opened up about not returning on Mike Vrabel's new coaching staff in 2025.
Slater spent the 2024 season as an advisor to former Patriots coach Jerod Mayo. He rejoined the Patriots after a decorated playing career that saw him become one of the greatest special team gunners of all time.
He won three Super Bowls and made ten Pro Bowls, establishing himself as the cornerstone of the Patriots special teams operation. The legendary special teamer held that role from 2008-2023 before officially announcing his retirement.
'I've had a tremendous experience as a Patriot. They've been nothing but good to me,' Slater told WBZ-TV's Dan Roche, via Matt Geagan of WBZ News. 'They allowed me to live out my childhood dream and I'm very thankful for that. I'm thankful for all the Kraft family has done for me and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
'I'll always be a Patriots fan and always support the team. Right now, it's important that I support my family and that's what I'm going to do moving forward.'
Slater will always hold a place in Patriots history as one of the most dominant players at his position. Furthermore, he will also hold a place as a true captain and locker room leader during his time with the organization.

Bills QB Josh Allen makes honest admission on Patriots QB Drake Maye
Bills QB Josh Allen makes honest admission on Patriots QB Drake Maye Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has more than just respect for New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. He admitted that Maye is one of his favorite young quarterbacks in the NFL. That sets the stage for an interesting rivalry with Maye and Allen facing each other twice every season. Allen is the reigning NFL MVP and the face of the league, while Maye is the promising newcomer determined to one day take the throne. "I think Drake is super talented, he's one of my favorite young quarterbacks in the league," Allen told Sports Illustrated's Liam McKeone. "I've spent some time around him and he's got his head on his shoulders the right way. He just does things the right way. I think that he exemplifies football." Maye made the Pro Bowl and teased his elite potential as a franchise quarterback for New England in his rookie season. Getting a ringing endorsement from Allen isn't something to downplay. Maye will be in a position to take things to the next level in 2025 with an improved offensive line, more weapons and a much more experienced coaching staff. The Bills are still at the top of the mountain in the AFC East, but Maye and the Patriots might finally be closing the gap. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

No. 80 Who's wearing it now: TE Ian Thomas This eighth year veteran has spent his entire career up to this point with the Carolina Panthers. He joins the Raiders as a solid number three tight end option behind Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer. He's a solid 6-4, 260 pounds with some decent hands but even better blocking and special teams abilities. Who wore it best: WR Jerry Rice The GOAT joined the Raiders in 2001 at the age of 39. In his second season with the team, at the age of 40, he put up over 1200 yards receiving (1211), made his 13th career Pro Bowl and the Raiders were in the Super Bowl. Former New York Jets LB C.J. Mosley retires from the NFL
Former New York Jets LB C.J. Mosley retires from the NFL CJ Mosley has called it a career. The five-time Pro Bowler has retired from the NFL. The 33-year-old, who last played in the league with the New York Jets last season, announced he's hangin' them up on Thursday: Mosley has been a free agent since March. The Jets released him in March after he missed much of the 2024 season due to various injuries including a neck problem. Mosley being sidelined did allow Jamien Sherwood to step into the lineup and become the top linebacker on New York's defense. According to ESPN, Mosley was designated as a post-June 1 cut, which means his remaining dead-cap hit will be spread across the next two years. Those totals are $8.8 million this year and $7.7 million in 2026. Mosley joined the Jets via a five-year, $85 million deal in 2019. Mosley earned three-straight Pro Bowls with the Baltimore Ravens before heading to New York. From 2019 to 2024, Mosley only earned one Pro Bowl with the Jets. Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 offseason.
