Rangers transfer rumours collide as Luuk de Jong shares trait with Ibrox linked star as PSV hero arrives at D-Day
Rangers have been told about the leadership credentials Luuk de Jong could bring to Ibrox - with the Dutchman drawing comparisons to another veteran who has also been mooted as a Light Blues target.
Captain De Jong is out of contract with PSV Eindhoven after banging in 14 league goals last season to help the Eredivisie giants secure a second championship in succession.
The 34-year-old has been back training with the club until his future is resolved but talk over a potential move to Govan has been directly addressed by his manager Peter Bosz.
And while the rumours roll on, fans have been given an insight into the kind of character the former Newcastle and Barcelona striker is on the pitch.
Top-flight referee Bas Nijhuis - who has been a FIFA listed whistler since 2007 - has also compared De Jong's demeanour to Jordan Henderson, with the ex Liverpool skipper also weighing up his options after leaving PSV's rivals Ajax.
Asked about Henderson on Dutch television show De Oranjezomer on Wednesday, he said: "Those types of players create a bit of a buzz on the pitch. He shouts at you a lot from a distance. He's quite active and coaches a lot.
"I think he's a completely different type of captain than Luuk de Jong.
"He's much calmer and calls out sometimes. That's a completely different type. But I do like players who are a bit different."
One of the biggest transfer sagas in recent memory drew to a close last week with Hearts talisman Lawrence Shankland finally putting pen to paper on a new deal at Tynecastle.
Shankland was previously on Rangers' radar and one former Scotland international has given his thoughts on why Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell didn't move heaven and earth to try and snap up the 2023/24 Premiership Golden Boot winner.
Ex Liverpool and Everton midfielder Don Hutchison told BestBettingSites.com: "I really like him. I think he's a good player.
"I just think it depends on what Russell Martin wants, so he might not have wanted to push hard for him. Maybe he was always interested in staying with Hearts if he could.
"Martin will have in his mind a certain type of player that he wants to work with, a certain type of style. But Shankland has always looked like a good player to me.
"I quite like the way he plays. I quite like the way he wears his heart on his sleeve, I think. I think he's an industrious player. It's making that step up.
"We can't be sure that Martin saw in Shankland the kind of player he thought he needed to get a balanced side at Ibrox."

Premier League CEO Masters pleads for patience in Man City case
Aug 13 (Reuters) - Premier League chief executive Richard Masters defended the league's judicial process on Wednesday amid criticism over the slow pace of Manchester City's disciplinary case involving 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches. Speaking at a Premier League season launch event in Liverpool, Masters said that once charges are brought forward, the matter is handed over to an independent panel, which operates autonomously. "It's an independent judiciary essentially," Masters told Sky Sports. "They are then in charge of the process and its timings. They hear the case, they decide the outcome and we have no influence over it or its timing." Masters refrained from speculating on when a decision might be reached, but acknowledged the frustration surrounding lengthy legal processes. "My frustration is irrelevant really, I just have to wait. Legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated. But we have to be patient," he said. Masters also addressed speculation around staging Premier League matches abroad, after LaLiga's plan for a game between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami received approval from the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Monday. He said the controversial "Game 39" concept of an extra competitive match hosted outside of Britain remained off the table. "I think that (LaLiga) match that's been talked about, there's a long road to go yet about whether that will actually happen," Masters said. "It hasn't changed our view about matches abroad. We did look at the 39th game way back when with lots of controversy... Our objective at the time was how to grow the Premier League around the world. We've been able to do that through different means," he said. Masters also responded to concerns over the competitiveness of newly promoted clubs, after all three teams relegated last season - Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton - had only just come up. The same thing happened in the 2023-24 campaign when Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United returned to the second-tier after only one season in the top-flight. Masters pointed to success stories like Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham, who were promoted for the 2022-23 season and are "performing extremely well in the Premier League three years later". "It's never going to be easy... The Premier League is becoming more competitive. The Championship is a fantastic division. We want it to be successful. We want there to be an influx of different clubs coming in and out. So it's something we need to keep an eye on." Masters also confirmed that the newly established independent football regulator is expected to begin operations in October or November. "We are the first country, major football nation to be regulated in this way," he said. "The Premier League operates in a global environment. So naturally we have some concerns, but the main thing is that I think the regulator doesn't start from the position that football is somehow broken in this country... "All of the key indicators are really positive for the whole of the pyramid, for the England teams, men's and women's. So, I think there is lots to be really proud about and the regulator should really be intervening where absolutely necessary." The new Premier League season kicks off on Friday when defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth.

The game has become more and more admin-heavy over the years, so it is important to keep on track of the new rules and regulations each season. There is always going to be someone in your league who is on top of everything and you don't want to fall behind because you are not as clued up. Picking the best players is just half the battle, deciding when to play the vast array of chips and take advantage of extra transfers are more things to worry about. Do not worry, though, we have got you covered on the things you need to know before the season gets underway. The new Premier League campaign begins on Friday night as defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield. That's the first stumbling block you must hurdle, don't miss the first deadline of the season on Friday at 6.30pm! Otherwise, here's everything you need to know. There are now going to be points on offer for players who make clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles. This means defensive midfielders will become a much more appealing option than they ever have before – although that is not hard as they were a complete non-starter before. Defenders of bottom half teams will also get a boost as they get more chances to make the defensive contributions. FPL have done the maths for last season and it was Everton's James Tarkowski who would have earned the most defensive contribution points, with a whopping extra 44 over the season. That's big! Defenders who make a combined total of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles in a game will get two extra points. Midfielders and forwards can also earn these points and will be credited for clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles AND ball recoveries. However, they need to make a combined 12 of those actions to land two points. Chelsea's Moises Caicedo would have been a big hit for this last season, racking up an extra 42 points. The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) funs from December 21 to January 18 this season and has been a headache for FPL managers in the past. However, the kindly fantasy overlords have dished out some extra transfers this season to deal with the disruption to your team. The tournament will cover Gameweeks 17-22, so in Gameweek 16 there will be FIVE free transfers available. Make sure you have no free transfers by the end of Gameweek 15 to cash in on all five AFCON freebies. This is where your admin skills really need to be deployed, because there are now eight chips to use this season. The Wildcard, Triple Captain, Free Hit and Bench Boost chips are back but now you can use them all in the first half of the season and again in the second. More Trending You will be able to use all four chips up until the Gameweek 19 deadline on December 30 and then again after that date. They cannot be carried over. The Wildcard has been available twice in recent seasons, the other three chips are now joining it. Last year's bizarre and quite annoying Assistant Manager chip has been binned, quite rightly. There have been other changes this season, with the way assists are registered tweaked and minor alterations to the bonus system, but life really is too short to worry about such things.
