Global greetings pour in as Maldives, Nepal extend wishes to India on 79th Independence Day
Former President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, took to the social media platform X to convey his wishes to the Indian leadership and its citizens, noting that India has been a 'steadfast friend and neighbour' on which Maldivians can count.
'Warm greetings to H.E. President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn, H.E. PM @narendramodi, the Government, and our close friends - the people of India - on India's Independence Day. India has always been a steadfast friend and neighbour whom Maldivians can count on at all times. May our friendship grow from strength to strength,' he stated.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, Arzu Rana Deuba, also extended her greetings through a post on X, addressing External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the people of India.
She emphasised the Himnalayan Country's deep values in the 'longstanding and enduring partnership' with India, noting that India has been a 'shining example of democracy' around the world.
'Extending my heartfelt congratulations to @DrSJaishankar and the people of India on the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day. Nepal deeply values its longstanding and enduring partnership with India. On this Independence Day, we wish the people of India continued prosperity, unity, and harmony. May India remain a shining example of democracy, inspiring countries around the world,' she stated.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the strength of the India-US relationship and their shared commitment to a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region, while extending his warm wishes to the people of India on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day.
The US Secretary of State, in a statement, highlighted the growing strategic partnership between the world's oldest and largest democracies and described the relationship between India and the US as 'consequential and far-reaching,' built on shared democratic values, mutual respect, and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
'On behalf of the United States, I extend our congratulations and warm wishes to the people of India as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 15,' Rubio said in a statement released by the US Department of State on Thursday (local time).
'The historic relationship between the world's largest democracy and the world's oldest democracy is consequential and far-reaching. Our two countries are united by our shared vision for a more peaceful, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific region. Our partnership spans industries, promotes innovation, pushes the boundaries of critical and emerging technologies, and extends into space. Working together, the United States and India will rise to the modern challenges of today and ensure a brighter future for both our countries,' the statement added.
This year, the celebrations carry the theme 'Naya Bharat', reflecting the government's vision of achieving 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047. (ANI)

Wang will also hold talks with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who visited Beijing in July, the statement said. The two major economic powers have long competed for strategic influence across South Asia. However, they have moved to mend ties after being caught up in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff blitz. Chinese and Indian officials have said in recent weeks that the two countries were discussing the resumption of border trade. Thai lawmakers pass massive US$117bil budget to revive economy
Image from The Nation Thailand/ANN BANGKOK (Bloomberg): Thailand's lower house of parliament passed a 3.78 trillion baht (US$117 billion) annual budget, needed to support a fragile economy that's at risk from issues ranging from the impact of higher US tariffs to a downturn in tourism. The budget bill for the year starting Oct 1 was backed by 257 lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives late Friday, following a three-day debate. A total of 229 members opposed the spending plan. The vote will be a relief to investors in the Southeast Asian nation, by avoiding a repeat of the months-long deadlock over spending plans seen in 2019. The country faces a litany of problems, including political instability linked to the suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra; continued tensions with Cambodia which recently erupted into violent clashes; and a stiff 19% tariff on shipments to the US, Thailand's biggest export destination. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira thanked the house for approving the budget and said the government will ensure the spending is efficient, transparent and delivers maximum benefit to the people. "I would like to assure that the policies, measures, and budget approved will be implemented in accordance with the designated objectives and plans,' Pichai said in a post on X. The government has defended a marginal increase in spending for the year starting October, and a projected budget deficit of 860 billion baht ($27 billion), or 4.3% of gross domestic product. Officials say the outlays are necessary given the increased risks to the economy from global trade uncertainties. The Senate will review the budget on Aug. 25-26, but analysts expect the spending plan to take effect on Oct. 1 as planned. The Constitutional Court will rule on Aug. 29 whether to disqualify Paetongtarn, amid allegations that she breached ethical standards in handling a border dispute with Cambodia. "Put together, these developments increase the odds that the 2026 budget could be passed before the conclusion of Paetongtarn's case, thereby removing the most significant headwind to growth as a result of the ongoing political crisis,' Citi Research said in a note to investors this week. More support is coming for the economy. MIC confirms informal discussions with PN
KOTA TINGGI: MIC today admitted that the party has held informal discussions with Perikatan Nasional (PN) on its future direction. MIC president Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran said the party leadership is carefully reviewing its course following proposals from grassroots members, including those from Kedah and Penang, to support PN. He said the country's changing political dynamics and landscape require the party to decide its direction to ensure it does not become irrelevant. "Yes, we acknowledge that we have held informal discussions with PN on MIC's direction. MIC is not hiding anything... This is not a 'secret relationship'. "We will determine our own path. Having said that, we are not upset with anyone," he said after officiating the 79th Johor MIC Delegates Convention here today. Also present was Johor MIC chairman K. Raven. It was reported last week that several MIC branches, including those in Kedah, Penang, and Perak, passed motions to cooperate with PN and did not rule out leaving Barisan Nasional (BN). However, MIC Kedah chairman SK Suresh was quoted as saying that the final decision would be made by the party's central leadership. Commenting further, Vigneswaran said MIC is still carefully reviewing its future direction before coming to a final decision. He said the decision to be made would be for the benefit of the Indian community in the country and for the party's future. "Everyone must understand that the country's political dynamics have changed. If MIC does not accept this reality, we will be lost. "MIC accepts it; we are labelled weak, yet it is strange that many still want to discuss this party. We don't understand that. "Much analysis has been done about MIC, many things have been said, but we do not believe them. MIC only trusts our grassroots," he said.
