Alonso hits a grand slam and the Mets beat the Marlins 10-4
MIAMI (AP) — Pete Alonso hit a grand slam and the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 10-4 on Monday night.
Starling Marte, Luis Torrens and Brandon Nimmo also went deep for the Mets, who finished with 11 hits in the opener of a three-game series. Every starter in the lineup had at least one.
New York left-hander David Peterson gave up two runs and five hits in six innings. Peterson (1-0) struck out nine and walked three.
Alonso's drive chased Miami starter Cal Quantrill (0-1) and highlighted a seven-run fifth. Torrens capped the outburst when he connected for a two-run shot off reliever George Soriano to put the Mets ahead 8-1.
Otto López's solo homer in the first gave the Marlins a quick lead before the Mets tied it on Marte's drive in the third.
The Marlins scored two in the ninth, ending a string of 11 2/3 scoreless innings by New York's bullpen to start the season.
Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor sat out after his wife gave birth to the couple's third child. He made it to the ballpark in time for first pitch, but did not play.
Quantrill allowed six runs and eight hits over four-plus innings in his Marlins debut. The 30-year-old right-hander signed a one-year deal as a free agent Feb. 12. Key moment
After getting ahead 3-1 in the count against Quantrill, Alonso fouled off two consecutive sinkers. Quantrill then threw another sinker that Alonso drove 400 feet over the wall in right-center for his fourth career slam to make it 6-1. Key stat
Nimmo's two-run shot in the sixth gave him eight home runs at loanDepot Park, tying his most at any road ballpark. He also has eight at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park and Atlanta's Truist Park. Up next

You can't see it or hear about it just yet, but inside Madison Square Garden, the Rangers organization is busy planning for the club's gala 100th anniversary. At this very time a century ago the Garden -- that is the third Garden, not this one – was a year old and already had an NHL team, the New York Americans. Now, a century ago, Conn Smythe was given the job of building a Rangers roster. Now, you Blueshirt fans can get a jump on the MSG marketeers and learn all about the Original 1926-27 Blueshirts, their unusual creation, and the arresting characters that enabled New York to have its first Stanley Cup only a season (1927-28) later. The way to do so is get your hands on a copy of "The Last Original Ranger," a novel by Bryan Reilly. I've read it twice; and my buddy Bernie Rhode just finished his. Together, we are RAVING about it. While "The Last Original Ranger" is called "fiction," it is, but it also isn't. Author Reilly weaves his tale around Murray Murdoch, who made the Blueshirt varsity in 1926 along with the more famous Frank Boucher and the brothers Cook, Bill and Bun. With uncanny historic accuracy, Reilly captures the essence of training camp right into the regular season with both major and minor characters from that era exquisitely portrayed. (One such character really fooled The Maven.) There's also a keen mystery plot which Reilly cleverly disguised and which will be a challenge for any Rangers historian to unravel. J.T. Miller Has To Put Spirit Back Into The Blueshirts Not long after the Rangers packed their gear and went golfing, snorkeling or whatever elsehey do with their petty cash, Joe Micheletti said something not so petty about the team he'd left as an MSG Networks analyst. The beauty part is that Brother O'Reilly can write which makes the whole package a must read. Bottom Line: Reading "The Last Original Ranger," you'll get the feel that this 1926-27 team played only last night and you're reading about them in today's papers. Get a hold of this gem and you can boast that you're the first Ranger fan on your block to start celebrating the your team's 100th anniversary. (P.S. Russell Wilson joined Gabe Davis at dinner during New York Giants visit
Throughout free agency and the draft, one of the main focuses for the New York Giants has been ensuring that there are enough skill players for Russell Wilson to throw the ball to this fall. Malik Nabers, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Darius Slayton are the sure starters in 2025, but after that, it gets a little murky. In May, the Giants hosted former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Gabe Davis for a visit. It wasn't a traditional free-agent visit, but more of a "let's see where you're at" visit focused on medical evaluations and system familiarity. Davis appeared on the Up & Adams Show on Thursday, and Davis shared some details on that visit. "It was great, Chad (Hall), Dabes, Shea (Tierney), all those, Joe (Schoen), I mean, it was awesome," Davis said. "Going out to New York and seeing those guys and talking with them. Russ, Russ came to dinner, that was dope, you know, to have Russell Wilson there. That was pretty sick. He's a legend." Davis was drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills. He played there, catching passes from Josh Allen, until his rookie contract expired and he signed a one-year deal with the Jags. Through 72 games over four seasons, Davis has recorded 183 passes for 2,969 yards and 29 touchdowns with four fumbles. He also has postseason experience, which is crucial to the locker room. In seven postseason games, Davis has 22 receptions for 474 yards and six touchdowns with zero fumbles. Davis currently remains a free agent, but as camp continues, that could change. Jim Dandy Stakes: Best Bets, And The Risks Of Sovereignty's Deep Close

(Photo by) Getty Images The decisive Kentucky Derby and Belmont victor Sovereignty has been busy at work in residence at Saratoga since May 8, just a few days after his commanding Kentucky Derby run, and a short month before his commanding three-length win in the Belmont. It's been seven weeks since that latter, most clearly tactical three-length win, and his trainer, the rock-steady William Mott, has made no radical changes in his champion's regimen. Mott's thinking is that the colt came out of his Triple Crown gauntlet fine and has, in the Dakota-born trainer's understated parlance '...continued to do well.' Obviously, with its characteristically short field of five, and minus Journalism and a few other threats that we could name, the Jim Dandy won't pose the many pointed questions for Sovereignty that the Kentucky Derby or the Belmont did. At 2-5 in the view of the sage NYRA oddsmakers, the champion remains the hands-down favorite, and he's breaking from the outside. So much for the basics. It's race day, so, first, a refresher of the the Jim Dandy field: Post Position, Horse, Jockey, Trainer, Morning Line 1) Baeza, H. Berrios, J. Shirreffs, 3-1 2) Sandman, J. Ortiz, M. Casse, 6-1 3) Mo Plex, M. Franco, J. Englehart, 10-1 4) Hill Road, I. Ortiz Jr., C. Brown, 12-1 5) Sovereignty, J. Alvarado, B. Mott, 2/5 (Source: NYRA, 7/26/2025) Despite Sovereignty's obvious demonstration of power and control in the Derby and the Belmont, his two Triple-Crown victories could not have been more different. Closing deep from no less than 13 lengths back in the (for other runners) quite difficult Louisville mud, the champion powered by Journalism and took the win by a resounding length-and-a-half. It should be recalled that that feat — extraordinary in any race — was executed against a field of eighteen other runners. And on top of that, in a Kentucky Derby. Even for the ordinarily unflappable Mott, that was admittedly a bit too much of a challenge to arrange for oneself. By contrast, in the Belmont, jockey Junior Alvarado adroitly kept Sovereignty closer to the pace, up in the mix, no time to lay back and do that Sovereignty thing of melting into the rear. He did not languish further back than third. It paid off in his winning margin, which doubled over that of the Derby, but in a deeper way well registered by his Hall of Fame trainer, Alvarado's keeping Sovereignty up front also kept the horse's racing mind more engaged with the contest unfolding around him. Although there was plenty of grit supplied by the Derby, the Belmont was grittier in a different, more technical way. Out by his athlete's stall in the Saratoga barns last week, Mott admitted as much, saying: 'Sovereignty showed a little more tactical speed (in the Belmont), so hopefully he shows some of that (in his race) on Saturday.' None of which means that there's no threat to Sovereignty's dominance, Mott went to pains to point out. Like all trainers in the race save Jeremiah Englehart, Mott rightly directs a goodly portion of his concern at newcomer (and Ohio Derby winner) Mo Plex, the known speed of this little peloton. 'Mo Plex looks to be the lone speed in the race,' Mott told the Saratoga correspondents with characteristic understatement. 'Naturally we wouldn't want him to get away from us.'
