The Hindu08-08-2025
Two cricketers of Indian origin — Aryan Sharma and Yash Deshmukh — were on Friday (August 8, 2025) named in Australia's 15-member squad for the upcoming home series against India Under-19 team next month.
While Sharma hails is a batter from Victoria, all-rounder Deshmukh is among five players from New South Wales picked in the squad, which will be coached by former Australia head coach Tim Nielsen.
The multi-format series will begin with three 50-over matches to be played on September 21, 24 and 26 at the Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane. It will be followed by two four-day matches scheduled from September 30 to October 3 in Brisbane and from October 7 to 10 in Mackay.
The assignment will be Nielsen's first as in charge of the U-19 side. Nielsen previously coached the senior Australia men's team between 2007 and 2011.
"We're also thrilled to welcome Tim Nielsen as Head Coach of the National U19 squad. His extensive international experience and leadership will be instrumental in guiding and inspiring Australia's next generation of cricketers," Sonya Thompson, Cricket Australia Head of National Development, said in a release.
The series is part of Cricket Australia's long-term player development strategy, aimed at providing young players international exposure in both white-ball and red-ball formats.

Match against Ronaldo's Al-Nassr 'once-in-a-lifetime moment' for India's FC Goa

Synopsis Cristiano Ronaldo is set to play in India as Al-Nassr faces FC Goa in the Asian Champions League Two, a match hailed as historic for Indian football. The draw places Al-Nassr, with stars like Sadio Mane and Joao Felix, in Group D alongside Istiklol and Al-Zawraa. AP FILE - Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo, right, and Al Hilal's Al Bulayhi challenge for the ball during Riyadh Season Cup 2024 final match at the Kingdom Arena Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024. Cristiano Ronaldo will travel to India to face FC Goa in an Asian Champions League Two match being hailed as "historic" in the country. Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia and its superstars were drawn Friday against the Indian Super League (ISL) club in Group D of Asia's second tier club competition, along with Istiklol of Tajikistan and Iraq's Al-Zawraa. The top two from each of the eight groups advance to the second round. "This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment for FC Goa," club CEO Ravi Puskur told The Associated Press. "To host Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the biggest game in Indian club football history." Ronaldo, 40, has yet to win a major trophy since signing for the Riyadh club in 2022 and the team is expected to be at full strength when the action starts in September Al-Nassr, which finished third in the Saudi Pro League last season, also boasts famous names such as former Liverpool star Sadio Mane and Joao Felix, the Portuguese forward who signed from Chelsea in July. "For Indian football, this is historic," Puskur added. "We are here on merit, and a match like this gives us the chance to show that we can compete on the continental stage, becoming part of the sport's biggest narratives." Puskur is confident that the excitement will be felt all over the country to give the local game a much-needed boost. "It's a unique opportunity to bring global attention to Indian football and, most importantly, a chance to spark a greater interest in Indian football among fans across the country, giving the game the spotlight it has long needed," he said. The draw comes with Indian domestic soccer in crisis. The 2025-26 ISL season was due to start in September, but has been suspended due to uncertainty over the renewal of an organising agreement between the Indian federation and its commercial partner, the Football Sports Development Ltd., pending a Supreme Court order. Bengaluru FC, Odisha FC and Chennaiyin FC have either suspended salaries or ceased soccer operations until a solution is found. "While the financial boost is important, the bigger picture is the opportunity this creates for long-term growth," said Puskur. "The global attention, sponsorship interest, and fan engagement from a moment like this help strengthen the club's foundations, allowing us to invest in the future."

Sehwag wanted to retire from ODIs after Dhoni's big call, but Tendulkar changed his mind: ‘You are emotional'

Virender Sehwag would not have been part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team if Sachin Tendulkar hadn't changed his mind after former India captain MS Dhoni dropped him in 2008. Virender Sehwag had made up his mind to retire from ODIs after MS Dhoni dropped him in 2008. Image: Reuters Virender Sehwag was one of the architects of India's 2011 ODI World Cup victory, but it would not have been possible without an intervention by the great Sachin Tendulkar in 2008, after the former opener was dropped from the team by then captain MS Dhoni. 14 years after India's World Cup win at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium under Dhoni's captaincy, Sehwag has revealed that he had made up his mind to retire from ODIs in 2008 after being dropped from the side during a tournament in Australia. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD When Tendulkar stopped Sehwag from retiring in ODIs Sehwag wasn't in great form as Dhoni decided to replace him at the top with Robin Uthappa. India later went on to win the tri-series that also included Australia and Sri Lanka. Sehwag has revealed that he had decided to retire from ODIs as he was not a part of the playing XI, but Tendulkar convinced him not to make any decision in a hurry, and to play a few more series before taking the final call. 'In the 2007-08 series against Australia, I played the first three matches and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. I wasn't picked for a while after that. Then I felt that if I can't be a part of the playing XI, then there is no point in playing ODI cricket,' Sehwag said on Padamjeet Sehrawat's podcast. 'I went to Tendulkar and said, 'I am thinking of retiring from ODIs'. He said, 'No. I went through a similar phase in 1999-2000, where I felt I should leave cricket. But that phase came and went. You are going through a trough, but it will pass. Don't make any decision when you are emotional. Give yourself some time and 1-2 series, and then take a call,'' Sehwag added. It proved to be fantastic advice as Sehwag continued in the Indian team as its star opener and helped them win the 2011 World Cup. In the World Cup, Sehwag scored 380 runs at 47.50 average.
