Police are investigating attempted murder after a 17-year-old was allegedly pranked into drinking a liquid from a cool drink bottle which contained acid.
The victim, who left school to assist his single mother, was employed at Mitchell's Moslem Butchery in Woodlands, and was apparently set to get a promotion.
According to reports, the victim allegedly drank oven acid from the Sprite bottle thinking it was cooldrink, however, spat it out.
The medication he took after allegedly resulted in internal bleeding and the victim was admitted to Groote Schuur hospital.
The victim was on life support in the ICU, but as recently gone off critical status.
Police spokesperson, Anelisiwe Manyana, said Lentegeur police are investigating an attempted murder case.
'It is alleged that the 17-year-old victim was pranked into drinking a liquid from a cool drink bottle which contained acid.
"He got cramps and vomited where after he was admitted to a medical facility to receive medical treatment. The case was reported by a family member the next day,' said Manyana.
"Subsequently the butchery was closed pending further investigation. No arrest has been made.'
Lentegeur Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, Michael Jacobs, said they have spoken to the station commander and said CCTV footage would need to be viewed and statements of employees need to be taken.
The butchery's management were advised not to give a comment yet to protect the dignity of the staff member and his family.
National Coloured Congress (NCC) member and community leader, Shahiem van Nelson, said a meeting was held on Monday opposite the butcher to calm residents after they expressed their anger.
'We calmed the community down because the building had nothing to do with what transpired there.
"Mitchell's Butchery has been long in the community; they have been serving this community for very long,' Van Nelson said.
'We also have community members that are working there and if anything should happen to the butcher itself our people will be sitting without work.'
He added that allegations that have been spiralling on social media saying that the manager is on the run are not true, but rather that they were asked to take leave and not to come to the butcher until the case has been resolved.
"We as a community made a collection for the mother and father to travel everyday to hospital and we really have to thank the community," Van Nelson said.

Growing number of children drawn into gang Violence in Western Cape

Young boys in the Western Cape are increasingly being used as gang recruits, often tasked with carrying weapons or acting as lookouts, a trend driving a deadly surge in youth violence. Image: File Children as young as 12 are being sucked into the deadly vortex of gang violence in the Western Cape, used as decoys, gunmen, and drug couriers in a growing trend that experts warn is fuelling the province's child murder crisis. According to the latest Western Cape Gang Monitor by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime (GI-TOC), more than one child was murdered every day in the Western Cape over a three-month period in 2024. The spike is linked directly to gang violence, where children are either caught in crossfire or recruited into the gangs themselves. 'This sobering statistic is indicative of a wider trend: more children than ever before are being recruited into gangs in the Western Cape,' the report states. Children are seen as ideal recruits by gang leaders, less likely to be suspected by police, and more willing to prove themselves. Craven Engel, a pastor and founder of gang-prevention organisation Ceasefire, told the report that gangs are weaponising innocence; 'a 12-year-old boy he had assisted, who had been recruited as a gunman for the Only the Family gang, was 'brainwashed to kill people.'' Community frustration is boiling over. Thandiso Xokoza, a community policing forum member from Philippi, said the problem is being compounded by political bias within the CPF. 'In my area a lot of young boys from 14 upwards are being recruited for smash and grab and extortion. The CPF does not help. In fact, its role is more political. SAPS are trying but not doing much, while Law Enforcement is more on the ground doing their best,' he said. Xokoza called for urgent reform. 'SAPS need to look at how they recruit CPF because so far, they are doing it completely wrong. For example, all the members of CPF belong to one political party and their agenda is the interest of their political party.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The report highlights a toxic combination of factors: poverty, generational trauma, and community breakdowns. During the COVID-19 lockdown, many children were left with 'a surplus of free time and the need to earn an income, even if by criminal means.' Community workers say that 'these kids are totally desensitized to violence. When they play games in the street, they have to play around a dead body.' The problem is compounded by gang fragmentation. Newly formed junior gangs, such as the Gotsavallas in Ottery, have emerged with younger and more reckless members. 'The group is made up exclusively of juvenile members, none of whom is older than 18,' The report states. Juvenile detention is no deterrent. Instead, it is described as a graduation into the gang, where 'young offenders may enter as a runner, but on leaving, may join the ranks outside as a fully-fledged member.' One official admitted When he comes out, he is more of a gangster. The presence of prison-style gang structures, similar to the notorious Numbers gangs, is also confirmed inside youth facilities. 'Rather than being places of safety and rehabilitation, these are therefore spaces where gang identities are formed,' the report warns. As the generational cycle deepens, the report stands with a clear warning: 'Children are being recruited into gangs more frequently and are being exposed to the most violent and extreme elements of their activities. This is not only potentially fatal but also perpetuates the generational trauma.' The solution, according to the GI-TOC, lies in long-term community-based interventions that address trauma, not just symptoms. But until then, the streets of the Western Cape remain a recruiting ground, and a battlefield, for South Africa's youngest soldiers. Community remembers Brigadier Leon Matthysen: A dedicated Durban policeman

Durban policeman Brigadier Leon Matthysen passed away from a heart attack on Wednesday. Image: Supplied Tributes continue to pour in for Durban policeman Brigadier Leon Matthysen, who passed away from a heart attack on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the community. Matthysen was the station commander and head of crime prevention at several police stations in KwaZulu-Natal during his career. In 2023, he was appointed as the station commander of Pinetown SAPS. On Thursday, the community, Community Policing Forums (CPF), and Private security companies held a memorial drive from Kloof to Pinetown police station in memory of Matthysen. Andreas Mathios of Marshall Security said people came out in their numbers, which was a testament to the deep respect and admiration 'we held in our hearts' for Matthysen. 'He was the ultimate example of South Africa's finest, a true top cop whose integrity, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice set him apart. He did not just wear the uniform, he honoured it, and in doing so, earned the trust and respect of the community he served,' Mathios said. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Aidan David, the chairperson of eThekwini District Police Board and Provincial Board treasurer, spoke of the memories he had of Matthysen, including the support he showed to the CPFs. David said wherever Matthysen's career had taken him, he always touched the lives of people and made them feel safe. According to him, Matthysen always supported the CPFs and believed that crime cannot be solved without the input from the community. David said that Matthysen left an indelible mark as one of the best station commanders that Isipingo SAPS has ever had, adding that he was an officer who never liked to be office-bound. 'He used to always sit at the back of the SAPS kombi with the door open, and he would make the young officers like Constable Donald Naidoo drive through the CBD of Isipingo and do patrols. Before the van could stop, if he saw a suspect breaking the law, he would spring out of that moving van and pounce on the suspects, and before they knew what happened, they would be apprehended by Brigadier Matthysen,' David recalled. David said that for the police officers patrolling with Matthysen, it was like an action scene from a movie. 'This kind of dedication and guts kept the people of Isipingo safe, and he really cleaned up our town of Isipingo and left us to take office with his promotion elsewhere,' David said. Image: Supplied An unfortunate act of young people allegedly hanging onto delivery trucks to steal food items has claimed the life of a 20-year-old in Delft. Aiden Langenhoven, who is alleged to be one of the boys known to steal from delivery trucks in the area, died on Wednesday after yet another delivery jacking. Delft Community Policing Forum (CPF) public relations officer, Francois de Bruin, confirmed the incident that took place at Voorbrug and Delft Main Road at the 7/11 circle. 'Langenhoven attended Roosendal High in Delft and it is believed that there was attempts to take cool drinks off a delivery truck as was and still is unfortunately the case at these hotspots in Delft Main Road, where these kids are being used to do the bidding of hardened criminals. 'Neighbourhood Watch, SAPS, the community and CPF are at our wits end and we concede its really a problem at these hotspots, however, CPF/SAPS want to salute the NHW who have identified the operating timeslots when these boys operate. 'As precautionary measures we ask motorists to try not to have valuables of any kind in open bakkies where possible.' Video Player is loading.
