Cowan: Canadiens buzz is back as players, fans raise bar for coming season

'You must be excited about the Canadiens this season?'
Article content
That's something I heard from Canadiens fans everywhere I went during my summer vacation.

It has been a very long time since I remember Montreal fans being so excited about the team — and it's with good reason.

There was an excitement level last season after GM Kent Hughes acquired Patrik Laine in an August trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets. But that buzz faded when Laine suffered a knee injury during the pre-season that sidelined him for the first 24 games, during which the team posted an 8-13-3 record.

Laine provided a big spark when he returned to the lineup, scoring eight goals in his first nine games, with the team going 6-3 during that span. Laine's production fell off after that — especially at five-on-five — but he still finished the season with 20 goals in 52 games, with 15 of them coming on the power play. As Hughes correctly stated at the end of the season, the Canadiens would not have made the playoffs for the first time in four years without Laine.

'My kind of only goal that I had for myself this year was to really enjoy playing again,' Laine said after missing the last three games of the first-round playoff loss to the Washington Capitals with a broken finger. 'I definitely did that, even though it was hard at times. I still enjoyed every bit of it. So for me, individually, people are always going to talk about numbers and all that, but for me it was a success that I got to enjoy this awesome sport again.'

Laine regaining his love for hockey could be huge for the Canadiens. He had thoughts about retiring when he entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program for mental-health reasons after playing only 18 games with the Blue Jackets during the 2023-24 season and suffering a broken clavicle.

Life seems to be very good now for Laine.

In June, he got married to Jordan Smith in Palm Beach, Fla., and they honeymooned in Italy. Since then, Laine has spent most of the summer in Montreal and, in an interview with Finnish journalist Ville Touru, said he has been on the ice almost every day since the start of July. Laine said last year he was only able to train for about three weeks during the summer after recovering from surgery on his broken clavicle. The fact the 27-year-old is heading into the final season of his contract with an $8.7 million salary-cap hit should provide added motivation.

Calgary Wild FC captain Meggie Dougherty Howard signs through 2028

Calgary Wild's Meggie Dougherty Howard and Vancouver Rise's Nicole Stanton vie for the ball during the first half of an NSL match in Vancouver on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ethan Cairns) CALGARY — Calgary Wild FC has extended the contract of captain Meggie Dougherty Howard to 2028. The 30-year-old midfielder from Largo, Fla., has two goals, three assists and has amassed 22 shots on net in 1,410 minutes played for the pro soccer club in the Northern Super League that launched this year. Calgary (6-8-2) visits the Montreal Roses on Saturday. Dougherty Howard spent eight years in the NWSL with the Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride, San Diego Wave and Angel City FC before signing with Wild FC in February and becoming the club's first captain. She was a four-year starter at the University of Florida before turning pro. Dougherty Howard totalled 14 goals and 25 assists over 94 matches with the Gators. She was named the NCAA's Southeastern Conference tournament MVP in 2016 when she registered an assist in each match, including the match-winning golden goal in the final. 'I really wanted to stay in Calgary because it is exciting to be a part of a new organization and I feel very strongly about building this club and its direction forward,' Dougherty Howard said Wednesday in a statement released by the Wild. 'I've been to a lot of places throughout my career that have gotten it right, and others that have not. The intentions behind this club are positive and aligned with my values as a player and a person, so I want to continue to play here and share my leadership on and off the pitch. Over the next three years, I have really high hopes for this club. I want us to be competing for championships every year and be a team that other teams are fearful to play. I feel we are heading in that direction.' Wild sport director Alix Bruch called Dougherty Howard 'a game changer.' 'Meggie is an incredibly consistent player who has been an integral part of our team,' Bruch said. 'Her leadership on and off the field has raised the standards of our club in this new journey. Her style of play features all the qualities of a top midfielder: sound technical skills, great vision, a strong passer and tackler. 'Moreover, she is a lead-by-example type of player, but also a supportive leader who listens and knows how to boost her teammates' confidence so they all feel comfortable on the pitch.' Dougherty Howard arrived in Calgary from Florida during frigid weather in February. 'I remember getting outside and thinking, 'Did I make a mistake?' I truly didn't know if I could function,' Dougherty Howard stated. 'I learned very quickly that if you layer up, we can get it done.'
