House fires are on the rise in St. Johns County
Lithium-ion batteries are a big reason why firefighters are battling more house fires.
'We've seen a definite influx in golf cart fires and e-bike fires,' said Chris Naff, the spokesperson for St. Johns County Fire Rescue. 'If they get overcharged, they actually start expanding and heating up, and then that melts the outer shell, and that's when they basically for, lack of a better term, explode.'
The county's growing population is also something being attributed to the increase.

Naff said there have been 82 structure fires since the start of this year.
And the majority of those have been garage fires.
'In the last month or two, probably 80% of our fires have been started in the garage,' said Naff.
The next time you plug in your electric vehicles, firefighters said, first and foremost, follow the manufacturer's recommendations for charging.
'Typically, they are going to say plug them in and charge them to 100% or about 100%,' said Naff. 'And unplug them from both the wall outlet where you have them and the apparatus that they are plugged into.'
If you can, Naff suggests charging them outside.
'That way, if it does catch fire, or it does spark, it's away from your house and in your driveway,' said Naff.
And if your home does not already have a smoke detector in the garage, firefighters suggest installing one.

Community rallies around LA teen detained by Ice while walking dog
A southern California community is calling for the release of a high school student whom US immigration agents arrested earlier this month while he was walking his dog. Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero-Cruz was supposed to be starting his senior year of high school at Reseda charter high school this month. 'He is a good student, with a kind heart, who has always stepped up for his family.' Educators and advocates are expected to hold a rally and press conference in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon to call for Guerrero-Cruz's release. A former teacher who recently visited the teen is expected to share an update, ABC7 reported. The arrest comes as Donald Trump's crackdown on immigrants continues to unfold across southern California, where thousands of people have been arrested this summer at workplaces, at stores and near schools. Former Miami Heat security officer pleads guilty to selling stolen memorabilia
MIAMI (AP) — A former Miami Heat security officer pleaded guilty Tuesday to transporting and transferring millions of dollars worth of stolen game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia. Marcos Thomas Perez, 62, was a 25-year retired veteran of the Miami Police Department. The Miami resident worked for the Heat from 2016 to 2021 and as an NBA security employee from 2022 to 2025. According to the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida and FBI Miami, Perez stole more than 400 jerseys and other items from a secured equipment room and sold items through various online marketplaces. He had access because he worked on the game-day security detail at the Kaseya Center. He was one of a few employees with access to a secured equipment room that stored memorabilia the Heat organization planned to display in a future team museum. Over a three-year period, authorities say Perez sold more than 100 stolen items for approximately about $1.9 million and shipped them across state lines, often at bargain prices. They say he sold a Miami Heat jersey LeBron James wore during the NBA Finals for approximately $100,000.
