Bursa Malaysia ends morning session higher, lifted by blue chips

New Straits Times18 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session higher as investors bought select heavyweight stocks, led by the industrial products and services, as well as financial services counters, amid cautious sentiment in regional markets, said an analyst.
At 12.30 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 4.41 points to 1,592.62 from Wednesday's close of 1,588.21. The benchmark index opened 3.71 points firmer at 1,591.92 and moved between 1,590.31 and 1,596.02 in the morning trading session.
The market breadth, however, was negative, with 457 decliners outpacing 420 gainers, while 429 counters were unchanged, 1,288 untraded, and 17 suspended.
Turnover stood at 1.54 billion units worth RM1.31 billion.
Thong Pak Leng, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd's vice-president of equity research, said the recent "accumulation stance" from local institutions has supported the market, thus he expects the index to hover within the 1,585-1595 points range today.
"Wall Street closed overnight on a mixed note as traders continued to take profit on tech stocks, fearing prevailing high valuations. In addition, the sentiment may also be affected by the statement from the US Federal Reserve that a rate cut may not be so soon due to heightening inflationary pressure," he told Bernama today.
Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank was flat at RM9.80, CIMB added 10 sen to RM7.46, Nestle gained 50 sen to RM89.50, and Petronas Chemicals soared 52 sen to RM4.70.
Among the most active counters, Green Packet earned half a sen to 4.5 sen, Tanco added one sen to 74 sen, while Borneo Oil was flat at half a sen.
Across the broader market, the FBM Emas Index gained 20.74 points to 11,803.57, the FBMT 100 Index added 18.97 points to 11,587.27, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index went up 12.25 points to 11,711.59.
The FBM Mid 70 Index slipped 30.74 points to 16,572.72, and the FBM ACE Index fell 0.88 of a point to 4,695.04.
Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index climbed 51.22 points to 18,216.36, the Plantation Index increased 12.37 points to 7,604.97, and the Industrial Products and Services Index inched up 2.26 points to 162.99. The Energy Index slipped 1.46 points to 748.76.

Australian shares hit fresh high on mining and banks boost

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index has gained 2.6% so far this month. — Bloomberg SYDNEY: Australian shares rose to a record high yesterday, driven by miners and banks, while investors awaited US Federal Reserve (Fed) chairman Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium later today to gauge the interest rate trajectory. The S&P/ASX 200 index was up 0.6% at 8,966.80, as of 0043 GMT, after touching a fresh high of 8,973.70 earlier in the session. The benchmark has gained 2.6% so far this month, hitting multiple record highs as risk sentiment improved due to a slew of factors including an interest rate cut and positive corporate earnings. Investors around the globe are focussed on whether Powell will push back against market expectations for a rate cut next month when he speaks at the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium today, following a weak jobs report for July. Traders are currently pricing in around an 82% chance of a 25-basis-point rate cut in September, according to the CME Fedwatch tool. Back in Australia, investors focussed on corporate earnings. Australia-listed shares of James Hardie deepened their rout from Wednesday, falling as much as 9.6% to A$28.92, their lowest level since January 20, 2023. The fibre cement maker on Wednesday flagged a bleak outlook for fiscal 2026 and forecast earnings below street view. Whitehaven Coal fell as much as 4.2% to a one-month low of A$6.160, as the coal miner's annual profit declined by more than half. Miners rose 1%, with BHP and Rio Tinto up 0.1% and 0.9%, respectively. Financials climbed 0.3%, with the 'big four' banks rising between 0.1% and 0.7%. New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index rose 0.4% to 13,126.80. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand said the effect of interest rate cuts on the local economy had been slower than expected, with tariff threats impacting business and consumer confidence. — Reuters

Gas Malaysia's second-quarter net profit falls

The company's revenue slipped by 9.2% to RM1.8bil compared to RM1.98bil previously. KUALA LUMPUR: Gas Malaysia Bhd 's net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025, (2Q25) fell to RM99.12mil from RM110.05mil in the previous corresponding period. Revenue also slipped by 9.2% to RM1.8bil compared to RM1.98bil previously. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Gas Malaysia attributed the lower revenue to a lower average natural gas selling price, mitigated by a higher volume of natural gas sold and a higher tolling fee. For the first half ended June 30, 2025 (1H25), the company's net profit contracted to RM199.25mil from RM212.68mil in the same period last year, while revenue dipped by 5.5% to RM3.64bil from RM3.85bil. Gas Malaysia added that the company had declared on Aug 21, 2025, the first interim dividend of six sen per share. This amounts to RM77.04mil in respect of the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025, which will be paid on Oct 31, 2025. — Bernama

Dayang 2Q bottom line decreases

The company said its revenue fell by 41% to RM267.35mil against RM455.84mil previously. KUALA LUMPUR: Dayang Enterprise Holdings Bhd 's net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25) slipped to RM76.64mil from RM131.43mil in 2Q24. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said its revenue fell by 41% to RM267.35mil against RM455.84mil previously due to a lower vessel utilisation rate of 64% as compared to 91% in 2Q24. This decline was mainly driven by the delay in oil majors' contract commencement and the drydocking of two anchor-handling tug supply vessels in April and June 2025 for ship class extension, it added. For the first half ended June 30, 2025 (1H25), the company's net profit dropped to RM88.95mil against RM159.34mill in 1H24, while revenue slid by 40% to RM421.17mil versus RM702.96mil previously. The company said it is confident that solid activities will continue in the third quarter and taper off in the fourth quarter, given its performance in 2Q25, supported by steady vessel utilisation. — Bernama
