‘Inseperable Sisters': The lifelong bond of Coahoma softball stars

COAHOMA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – It takes a special group to win back-to-back state championships. It takes something even more to embark on the unprecedented three-peat.
Coahoma has cemented itself as the modern standard in Texas 3A Softball. The Bulldogettes have been to three straight state finals in the last three years, winning back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024.
Next week, the Bulldogettes return for the 2025 season with an even bigger target on their backs.
'We want to be a three-peat for sure,' junior catcher Mia Clemmer said.
'There's not much pressure because we've already done back-to-back so it's just show out, have fun,' senior pitcher Hannah Wells said.
Wells has been an integral part of Coahoma's recent success as the Bulldogettes trusted starting pitcher and a key piece of the batting order.
Wells won the State Championship MVP in Coahoma's 2023 title. In 2024, she pitched every single out of the state semifinal and final games en route to the Bulldogette's repeat championship.
Alongside her is junior Clemmer, a power-hitter for Coahoma, and lifelong teammate, catcher and friend of Wells.
The two began playing softball together in elementary school on travel teams before eventually bringing their two-punch combo to Dicky Stone Field in Coahoma.
'We've been through a lot together. Good and bad. We've celebrated a lot of wins and a lot of losses together,' Clemmer said of her and Wells' relationship. 'I know when she's struggling mentally, she knows when I'm struggling and we know how to help each other during that struggle.'
'She really pushes me to be a better human but also a better player. Like she's always, 'Hey you could do this a little bit better,' and it's never a criticism. It's always like she's trying to make me better and I think that having that relationship with each other really helps us be successful,' Wells said.
In September 2023, Wells announced she had committed to play softball at the University of Texas, fulfilling a lifelong personal dream.
'I'm really just excited to live out my dream. Playing college softball has always been my dream at any level when I was a little girl and getting to do it on that stage is really amazing,' Wells said.
And to no surprise, exactly one year later, Clemmer announced her commitment to Texas as well, fulfilling her own childhood dream, and a dream of the pair.
'We talked about it a lot, wanting to go to the same college. We just didn't know how reachable it was,' Clemmer said. 'Texas was such a dream for both of us. We didn't know how reachable that dream was either, anyway.'
'It's a journey and a dream we've had since we were little girls,' Wells said.
The duo has been described as inseparable, made evident by the two's desire to stick together beyond high school.
With Wells being a year older, this season will be the pair's final together at Coahoma. But the 'inseparable sisters' find solace in knowing that they will one day be reunited again in Austin.
'It's sad, but I'm really grateful that she's going to the same university as me so we'll get to be reunited,' Wells said.
'It's very exciting to know that although this is the last year with high school, it's not our last year together,' Clemmer said. 'Knowing that there's still more to our story is a lot easier on the heart.'
The Bulldogettes begin their quest toward three consecutive state titles on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at home against Fort Stockton.
