Coahoma softball downs Lexington for third consecutive state championship

AUSTIN — Once again, Coahoma is on top of the Texas softball world. The Bulldogettes won their third consecutive state championship with a 6-1 victory over Lexington in the Class 3A Division II title game Thursday at McCombs Field. Texas signee Hannah Wells was voted MVP after a 2-for-3 outing with a double and a home run. She also earned the win with eight strikeouts in a complete game. Advertisement Wells crushed the game's first pitch for a double, and two batters later Mia Clemmer opened the scoring with her own double. Lexington answered with a run on three hits in the home half of the first, but Coahoma scored the contest's final five runs. Wells allowed three hits the rest of the way and totaled two walks. Her towering shot in the third gave the Bulldogettes the lead for good. The future Longhorn became emotional seconds after the final out. "It's sad. I know that's terrible to say, but I am actually really sad," Wells said. "It's the best group of seniors in the game of softball, I think, for high school. And that shows with three state championships back to back. It's so surreal." Advertisement Wells played seven games at McCombs Field throughout her career, and that number will soon skyrocket. "I've played a lot of games here. It's my favorite place to be," Wells said. "I love the atmosphere. I just love Texas softball as a whole, so getting to come here is just a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm so glad I get to do it." Clemmer, a Texas commit, capped the scoring with a solo homer in the sixth. She went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Nevaeh Kerby, one of six seniors, tied Clemmer with a team-high two RBIs. Coahoma became the first softball team in UIL history to win three state championships in a row. Corpus Christi Calallen will look to match the feat Friday. Advertisement "It's a fitting end for these senior kids," Bulldogettes coach Alexander Orosco said, "that just bust their tails and do things the right way. It was fitting for them to get here and do it one more time." The Coahoma softball team celebrates after a win over Lexington in the Class 3A Division II state championship Thursday, May 29, 2025, at McCombs Field in Austin. HIGHLIGHTS: They've done it again, Coahoma wins third straight state title

AUSTIN, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The Coahoma Bulldogettes have won the 3A-D2 State championship for a third straight year, beating the Lexington Eagles 6-1. Mia Clemmer opened things up at the top of the first with an RBI double for the game's first score. However, the Eagles would respond with a run themselves thanks to an RBI single. The game would remain the same score until Hannah Wells broke out for a solo home run in the top of the third inning to make it 2-1. From there, Coahoma would add on four more runs before Wells threw her final strikeout with the Bulldogettes. 'It's a huge relief, you know, a huge relief,' says Head Coach Alex Orosco. 'I feel like now I'm going to take a deep breath of fresh air and just let it out. And just say, man, we did it again. We climbed the mountain, you know, successfully. We appreciate the support, man. We always do.' Coahoma finishes the season with a 34-1, completing the coveted three-peat. Highlights of the game are above. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘Inseperable Sisters': The lifelong bond of Coahoma softball stars

COAHOMA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – It takes a special group to win back-to-back state championships. It takes something even more to embark on the unprecedented three-peat. Coahoma has cemented itself as the modern standard in Texas 3A Softball. The Bulldogettes have been to three straight state finals in the last three years, winning back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024. Next week, the Bulldogettes return for the 2025 season with an even bigger target on their backs. 'We want to be a three-peat for sure,' junior catcher Mia Clemmer said. 'There's not much pressure because we've already done back-to-back so it's just show out, have fun,' senior pitcher Hannah Wells said. Wells has been an integral part of Coahoma's recent success as the Bulldogettes trusted starting pitcher and a key piece of the batting order. Wells won the State Championship MVP in Coahoma's 2023 title. In 2024, she pitched every single out of the state semifinal and final games en route to the Bulldogette's repeat championship. Alongside her is junior Clemmer, a power-hitter for Coahoma, and lifelong teammate, catcher and friend of Wells. The two began playing softball together in elementary school on travel teams before eventually bringing their two-punch combo to Dicky Stone Field in Coahoma. 'We've been through a lot together. Good and bad. We've celebrated a lot of wins and a lot of losses together,' Clemmer said of her and Wells' relationship. 'I know when she's struggling mentally, she knows when I'm struggling and we know how to help each other during that struggle.' 'She really pushes me to be a better human but also a better player. Like she's always, 'Hey you could do this a little bit better,' and it's never a criticism. It's always like she's trying to make me better and I think that having that relationship with each other really helps us be successful,' Wells said. In September 2023, Wells announced she had committed to play softball at the University of Texas, fulfilling a lifelong personal dream. 'I'm really just excited to live out my dream. Playing college softball has always been my dream at any level when I was a little girl and getting to do it on that stage is really amazing,' Wells said. And to no surprise, exactly one year later, Clemmer announced her commitment to Texas as well, fulfilling her own childhood dream, and a dream of the pair. 'We talked about it a lot, wanting to go to the same college. We just didn't know how reachable it was,' Clemmer said. 'Texas was such a dream for both of us. We didn't know how reachable that dream was either, anyway.' 'It's a journey and a dream we've had since we were little girls,' Wells said. The duo has been described as inseparable, made evident by the two's desire to stick together beyond high school. With Wells being a year older, this season will be the pair's final together at Coahoma. But the 'inseparable sisters' find solace in knowing that they will one day be reunited again in Austin. 'It's sad, but I'm really grateful that she's going to the same university as me so we'll get to be reunited,' Wells said. 'It's very exciting to know that although this is the last year with high school, it's not our last year together,' Clemmer said. 'Knowing that there's still more to our story is a lot easier on the heart.' The Bulldogettes begin their quest toward three consecutive state titles on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at home against Fort Stockton. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
